I am not comparing the benifits of being wealthy, but the benefits of being born wealthy(to become wealthy you need to work hard, to be born wealthy you need to do nothing). You would love to think that America is a level playing field, and i wish it were true, but it is not. Affirmative action seeks to address this disparity. Yes Yale is a private institution, but shouldn't a wealthy student be able to get in on their own merits, because that is what you seem to be advocating, that everyone be addressed on their own merits so if you hate affirmative action you should hate the legacy system even more. The legacy system helps people who have allready had every type of help imaginable.

inadequite eduction, poor home life, blah blah blah. this is one reason why so many ppl are dislike democrats - because all they have are excuses! its easier to bitch about something you dont have, rather that doing something about it.

So please tell me exactly what a 5 year old child going into an underfunded school is supposed to do about the fact that his school has far fewer resources than a school in the next town because the other school district gets more money because it is has a richer population. You cannot tell me that he has the same chance at success in school as the kid starting schol in the rich district, well you could but you would be more blind than i think you are. So all through school one kid has to work much much harder than the kid in the rich district and even then he will probably do worse in the end. So now the two are going into college and you are trying to tell me that this kid who has had everything stacked against him, who if he had been in the rich district would have done much better with the same amount of work, should not get preferential statistical treatment. I love how affirmative action is racist, don't you think there is a reason that minority students don't do as well in school, don't you think that reason might be that the schools they went to sucked, rather than that they are not as smart as the rich white kid. You tell me which answer is more racist.

For the record, i am not a democrat, and i take offense to being called one, democrats as a group are far to centrist in my opinion.

i think everybody agrees that in theory it would be nice for teachers to be paid 150k, but ill tell you this, if salaries were suddenly raised to 150k probably less than 1% of current teachers would be re-hired. and this is another reason why ppl dislike democrats. the primary responsibility of education is the parents responsibility, not the teachers. when parents stop blaming other ppl for their son/daughtes lack of education and start taking responsibility you will realize that getting more qualified teachers isnt a nessesity, its a bonus. the fact that so many ppl DO succeed in public schools is proof of this.

So the education of children is the responsibility of their parents? Ok so you are telling me that all the people who can afford to send their kids to private schools are shirking their responsibilities as parents? I didn't think so. Or is your solution for everyone to be home schooled? Its ever so easy to blame people who can't afford to put their kids in a better school, or can't afford the time to teach their kids in lieu of a good school, because both parents have to work. I think we do agree, however, that paying teachers more would result in massive layoffs of current teachers, because their would be more competition by more qualified candidates, i personally have no problem with more qualified people teaching in schools, and i would expect to have to pay for that quality.

what garbage. this is NOT the system in place right now in America and when ppl stop blaming 'random chance' and realize that if they simply work hard they will reep the benefits. is anybody else disturbed by this total lack of personal responsibility? when ppl stop blaming others for their problems (weather it be education, lack of a good job, etc) and start taking responsibility for their actions (or inactions) maybe theyll realize that they can do something about it.

Personal responsibility you say, my response to that is societal responsibility, did it ever occur to you that society is as much to blame for a person's initial circumstances as they are. Another apt analogy, if i were to put 100 people in 15 foot holes in the ground and I give them no food or water, sure some of them will claw their way out, but who is to blame for the ones who don't make it out. Let me spell it out for you, many people start life in the equivalent of a fifteen foot hole, are they to blame if they don't make it out, you would probably say yes, i would probably say, why don't you jump down with them and try it out for yourself.[q\]

So how does being in a union somehow indicate that anyone is ducking personal responsibility? So far, all I've heard is a lot of hooey that sounds suspiciously like Social Darwinism. Which is is a pretty sad excuse for being an egotistical, selfish, POS.

actually i think a private institution should be able to do as they please. but choosing a candidate based on his family history is FAR more admirable than choosing a candidate based on their ethnicity

yes, lack of parental involvment, discipline, etc. and the difference in school from one area to the next is minimal. the quality of students may be different - as kids from successfull families are more likely to possess those same skills that made thier parents successful - but the quality of the schools is very similar. as a matter of fact the elementary school and junior high I attended were right in the middle of gang territory but that didnt hold me back, my father wouldnt have allowed it. and even though my junior high was in a very bad neighborhood it was considered the best around and even kids from the richer parts of town were bussed in. and for the record i think admission to universities should be based soley on merit. if one kid has a 4.0/1400 and had all the help in the world he should get in over a minority student with a 3.5/1000 who had 500 brothers and sisters.

For the record, i am not a democrat, and i take offense to being called one, democrats as a group are far to centrist in my opinion.

yeah right you beat me

Think before you speak. I am left of center yet you accuse me of being a conservative, then you accuse me of bestiality. Those are ad hominem attacks and adequately characterize why you could not push your point. You lack the ability to stay on topic as many here seem to do. When they can think of nothing intelligent to say on the issue, they attack the man.

At least I can think you seem to lack any brain at all.
you started attacking me by childishly pointing at my English

Sorry DaiShan, but I must agree with freegeeks here... that was really lame and childish to resort to personal attacks to make your point. While I don't agree with freegeeks, I still think DaiShan was being a real dick.

Freegeeks, don't worry, not everyone here is an ass... some people are not children that continually resort to fallacious ad hominem attacks. Don't let DaiShan fool you, your English is quite good and the fact that you know 3 other languages is impressive. Anyone with half of a brain could completely understand you, so I don't know what DaiShan's problem is.

(Oh, and just so you know, I pretty much disagree with a lot of your views, but still, you deserve a chance to share them.)

I've been several times in the US and I had always had a great time. Nice people and a nice country.
I have nothing against americans, i just don't like the current policies of the Bush administration. In one of the other threads (about nationality) I made it clear that I wouldn't mind it if an american was prime ministre of my country.
For me, politics is about content and has nothing to do with the fact that you are american, french, belgian, ....

IMO a lot of people on this forum are so blinded by their "patriotic" feelings that it's pathetic. They start a thread because they don't like all the Bush bashing and the next day the same people start a thread to bash on the French

I know that my written English sucks, you don't learn a lot of grammar by watching american movies and tv series .

In any event, not many here in the US can speak more than english ... well maybe a bit or this or that but not to argue on a forum.
You do well and should be proud... Your english is just fine.

Ahh like minded thinkers look at the post, I pointed to his misuses of the english language as a side thought I made a point which he and you blatantly disregard, he then made a point that I couldn't speak french, I took 5 years of frech and am fairly fluent in it. When I made this a point in my retort he simply stated that he will not continue this discussion, look at the discussion, he continually ignored my points, as you do, then blatantly attacks me (the man ad hominem) for correcting his english, it wouldn't have been an issue had he not made it one, you further exacerbate the problem by further ignoring the issues and again attacking me for being an "ass" You have something to say? Say it on the issue, I'm sorry if he was offended at me correcting his grammar, but his offense is his problem not mine, as it stands I still have unaswered contentions on the table which neither you nor he have addressed. And to retort your contention that I did not give him a chance to share his views, this is an abusive statement which I cannot allow to stand. Show me once just one time where I tried to stifle his view? Show me once just one time where I made it a point to keep his POV from being heard. You can't, yet you will come out and spout off about me being an ass, simply because I pointed once off handedly to his misuse of the english language, a statement which was made in jest, and has now been blown out of proportion by those who cannot take even this simple jab. If you cannot take the heat stay out of the kitchen, freegeeks was simply looking for a way out, he did so by attacking me personally, and I am the ass

/edit I'm taking a break, the point where I allow the childish insults of the easily offended to get under my skin is the point where I need to take a break to let off steam. Emotion blinds reason and I do not wish to stoop to certain levels...

I suggest that you stay away. You started the attack in 2 different posts about my knowledge of the English language
I have no problem with having this discussion. The first time you attacked me I tried to keep the discussion going but in your second post you attacked me again. Excuse me that I don't want to discuss this issue any further with you. You can call me a treehugging commie eurotrash bastard (I'm used to be called like that in this forum) and I flame right back but I refuse having a discussion with someone that starts his posts by laughing at me because English is my freaking 4th language. It seems to me that other people in this thread (who don't even share my political believes) agree with me on that point.

bottom line: you attacked me first on 2 different occasions, if you can't handle the truth, too bad for you

note:

Daishan, you can post now and point to all the errors I made

goodbye

Liege is mostly french speaking and I got along fine with the unions and the people and the language. You folks are better than most nations in productivity and other important measures. Very precise in the manufacturing process.

All this about taxes etc.

It all depends on what you view as poor, middle class, and upper class.

the difference in school from one area to the next is minimal. the quality of students may be different - as kids from successfull families are more likely to possess those same skills that made thier parents successful - but the quality of the schools is very similar.

So you are saying that kids from better school districts are just better students because they have better breeding? Blunt but that was the gist of what you were saying no? If that is what you think then surely you would agree that if kids are born with a decided lack of advantage, they should be given help so that they can achieve as much as a genetically advantaged child. Or do you just say survival of the fittest? There is this thing called civilization by the way, you might want to read up on it. Its why we don't kill disabled children when they are born. Keep in mind i disagree with you, i don't think that there is any discernable lack of intelligence or propensity for learning in kids who go to terrible schools, i think it is a problem of nurture rather than nature. In any case there is something which is holding these kids back, if you think them unworthy of help good for you. But if you are going to keep to the same standard make sure you turn the fire department away if your house catches on fire, because really it should be your responsibility to protect your own family, right? the government shouldn't interfere to help you should they?

YES! rearing your children (education included) is the responsibility of the parent, not the government!

I have to ask you then, do you home school your children? Or do you share the responsibility with the government?

no, but im not to blame either. and i certainly dont think theres that many people that are so far fvcked from the start that a little hard work and motivation wouldnt solve their problems. again, its a lot easier to complain about what you dont have rather than actually doing something about it

I am glad you live in a nice little Utopia, maybe you should take a look around you, there are millions of kids living below the poverty line (which is way too high IMO) You tell them that they are not starting in a hole. I am glad for you that you had a father that pushed you to achieve, but what about the kids that have no father, i guess that would be their fault too huh? How can you possibly blame a child for the circumstances into which they are born, it is just beyond my comprehension, and i have a pretty good understanding of just how callous people can be.

if one kid has a 4.0/1400 and had all the help in the world he should get in over a minority student with a 3.5/1000 who had 500 brothers and sisters.

That is classic, those minorities they just breed like rabitts, us white folk better watch out or we'll be swimmin' in 'em pretty soon. That statement takes the cake for racist comment of the day in my book. Nice job, now head back to your Klan rally.
