It seems like a good timesaver, however, I would give Consumers Reports the money first. their car info is excellent. Otherwise most of the info they talk about can be had for free.

I bought some fighting chance reports last summer when I was car shopping - the info is pretty good but its not really anything that you couldn't find somewhere else for free (or at least cheaper) -

If you want a super deal on a car, my advice is to find the best price you can on the internet e.g. cars directand get your financing approved in advance e.g. people first then go to the dealerships and shop around. If you find the car you want, make an offer that is the same as what you could buy it for online.

That's what I did and the dealer refused my offer so I got up to leave and they changed their mind so fast they just about tripped over themselves getting me back in their office.... So for the next half hour I have to listen to the salesman bitch about how he's not making any commission on my deal....

The key is you have to go in knowing what is the top price you'll pay and be ready to walk if they don't accept.

Don't forget if you are a Costco member they can get you the car you want at invoice price. Just call them up and they will have your local dealerships fleet sales person call you up. No haggling, just the invoice price.

I recommend CarsDirect.com. I'm picking up my new 2002 Dodge Stratus R/T tomorrow thanks to them, and at a nice price, too. I've been car shopping and researching on and off for 3 months now, and I simply could not get a dealer to go as low as CarsDirect.com. Nor could I find an exact match (options, color) to what I wanted locally. CarsDirect found me the exact car I wanted and is shipping it to a dealership within 24 miles of me. So little hastle, so easy, you can't go wrong.

Costco doesn't sell at invoice, they sell at a special "Members Only" price - I got a couple of Costco quotes from dealerships and they were not as low as the carsdirect.com price.

Carsdirect.com has a reasonable price, especially if you don't have the time to do the research and deal with the hassle of finding a better deal. I just got a new truck for about $500 less than carsdirect.com can give me. Even then, I still feel like I'm being ripped off because I was able to find the exact same model with $900 of extra options for the same price I paid. Oh well, it seems like a better deal usually come along.

Carsdirect.com is a great bargaining tool. It tells you how much you can get the car for without hassle. Then, go to your local dealer and get a better deal. If they won't give you a better deal, no problem. Just go through carsdirect.com.

If anyone is thinking about getting a new Lexus in southern California, let me know. I can help you out. I also have good info on the '02 ES 300 whether you're in soCal or not.

TurtleMan,

CarsDirect.com has Lexus IS-300 for $1000 over invoice. In SoCal, you can easily get it at any dealer for $500 over invoice or less. You're looking at a base price of about $28.5K

Same deal with the RSX. You're not going to get anyone under invoice (unless they're desperate). The car is too new ind demand is too high. I was happy to just get one

Go to ClubRSX and read around in their forums if you haven't already. Alot of the guys have posted their prices paid. You'll see what I mean
