for correct cpu temp. [asus probe, mbm5, or speedfan]

This is a bit confusing. I have an ASUS CUSL2 motherboard and want to figure out the right temp for my cpu. I've usually relied on Asus Probe. Then I tried Motherboard monitor5. Just today, I tried Speedfan4.

Here are the range of temps as reported from the 3 programs.

Program - Temp. Range in Celcius [ide/seti]
Asus Probe v2.15.00 [34c / 45c]
Motherboard Monitor 5 [34c / 45c] It's basically the same as Asus Probe
SpeedFan v4.02 [15c / 29c]

ALL 3 programs report motherboard temp. as being 25c. My room is about 22c. The case is open now, else all the temps would be up a couple of degrees. The heatsink (near the bottom) doesn't feel hot, a little warmer than my harddrives. Speedfan reports my IBM 75GXP drive as being 25c.

Which program should I trust for my cpu temperature?

well seeing as how you have an asus motherboard I would trust the asus probe temperatures.... I run asus probe and it has always given me accurate results

It's very tempting to believe the Speedfan readings. I wonder why the readings are off by so much..

speedfan is wrong... why?

Because idle CPU temp can't be lower than your mb temp.

The bottom of the heatsink will feel cooler than the actual core temp, as it should (if the heatsink base is hotter than the CPU, then heat will flow backwards along the primary heat pathway).

MBM, with the Asus(cusl2) setting is perfectly accurate for a CUSl2 motherboard.

I also have a CUSL2 but mine it the CUSL2-C(P3 1Ghz). MBM5 (using the cusl2 setting) shows 35C Idle/45C Load, with Mobo temps at 26-27C. I believe this is accurate.

Anyone know if MBM5 is accurate with the Asus P4B266? If so, with what settings? I have this board on the way, that's why I'm asking.

I'm using MBM5 with P4B266, I am not sure if my readings are correct tho
I assume "asus 1" as the mobo sensor and "asus 2" is for the CPU ("asus 2 culs" won't work)

But there's one strange thing, that is, my cpu temp is measured in a unit of 4 degree. For instance, the readings toggles from 24 to 28 (or 32) but never 25 or 29...is there a way to increase the precision of the cpu sensor?

I have a 2.0a@2.2, P4 volcano HSF with AS2, and my CPU temp readings are 24-28 for idle, 32 for load (gaming + hrs of sandra stress tests)

i dont think with a p4b266 you should use asus 2 , i do believe we should be using asus (cusl2)
when i switch to asus 2 at 2100mhz at 1.5v i get a reading of 27 that just seems to low
with the asus (cusl2) i get around 40 average at idle
not sure which is right though
someone want to straighten this one ought

i think asus 2 (cusl2) is the correct setting according to many people on this forum. I would like the Asus 2 settings to be it but I guess it's too low.

I dont trust any of mine...

I run a water cooling setup and Asus Probe, the MB BIOS, and MBM5 report about 50C idle on my 1.4 GHz T-bird. I hope you see why I find the reported temps I get hard to believe.

I've had discrepancies too with my temp readings. I've only used MBM5 and SiSoftware Sandra's motherboard/chipset info page. (scroll down about halfway to see the temps.) MBM5 always shows cooler than Sandra. Evidently Sandra adds a few degrees C to compensate because (with my proc/mobo at least) (Celeron2 850 @ 1138, cheap PC Chips M790MR) there's no temp sensor actually inside the CPU, rather it's on the socket and therefore shows somewhat cooler than the actual temp inside the processor.

I do believe that we should use the Asus2 setting for MBM5 because when I run Prime95 MBM5 with Asus2 setting and Asus Probe are within a degree or two of each other. Also in the BIOS if I leave it sit for 15 minutes or so till the tamp hits it's max it is right within the same range.

EDIT:Just tried Speedfan and it is right on with MBM5 and Asus Probe!

Only trust the Asus Probe if you have a CPU with an internal temp diode with a mobo that supports it (IE: P2, P3, celeron, P4). With AMD CPUs, Asus probe over-compensates temps drastically.
