Can you define what you mean by 'heavy fantasy'

I assume you mean the overall plot and not so much lots of fantasy elements?

I ask because the first 3 Martin books have hardly any fantasy in them at all.

I think he's talking about the level of complexity, more so than the fantasy content. So heavy means a very long complicated storyline with a lot of characters, while light means a simple good vs. evil storyline with plenty of action and only a few main characters.

Some of the Shannara books are decent. The First King of Shannara and then Sword of Shannara were mostly enjoyable. I'd skip the latter two of the original trilogy. Heritage of Shannara was ok, nothing stellar but solid so it might be worth a read. Not sure how the newer books are. I liked the Word/Void series although its set in the modern world and is quite a bit different to the others.

Sword of Truth isn't worth it. Halfway in it gets so pretentious with the heavy-handed analogy to communism, and the later books are downright painful to read most of the time as he keeps explaining the same crap over and over and over and in very annoying manners (he'll spend an entire page drumming up how intelligent a character is to turn around and have them ask stupid questions and sound like a 4 year old on the next page, so that he can then have one of the other characters explain it in a long drawn out manner). I never got as annoyed as with Wheel of Time, but I grew tired of the characters which was the only thing that kept me reading after about book 4, but he seemed to be trying to make you not like his series by the end.

Redwall is good, but I'm not sure how well it holds up for older adults. Its worth a try and the books are pretty quick reads. I'd recommend starting out with Mossflower and then maybe Martin The Warrior followed by Redwall itself and then follow the series from there.

I really liked His Dark Materials, but its not really comparable to any of these, and the third book really changes the tone of the series so you may or may not enjoy it. The first two books are probably my favorite fantasy/somewhat sci-fi books that I've read.

The characters might be forest critters, but the stories could just as easily be done with humans.

And there's some pretty vicious moments for a 'cute series.' (every book racks up a good-sized body count . . . on both sides)

Yeah...I was going to say - I know they're about land animals, but the events that take place in them can be pretty "adult oriented". I keep thinking about that 3-way battle between the mice, weasels, and owls *shudders*.

Redwall is a series of books for fairly young children. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but someone who is old enough to read Martin's ASOFAI is not likely going to go for Redwall.

Card's Ender/Bean series is fun, but is SciFi, not Fantasy.

How fairly young? Just because something might be deemed "not as hardcore" as other fantasy books doesn't mean it's a bad read. I'm 24, have read ASOFAI, and still enjoy reading the Redwall series; they're excellent Fantasy novels. So I just disproved your statement

True, the Wiggan/Bean saga are SciFi, my mistake.

I'm in the process of reading the game of thrones series, I'm currently at the end of the second book. I am looking for a really good series to switch to, I was kinda disappointed with thrones, it just has too many different characters and it feels very slow moving.

I would definitely read the 3rd book (Storm of Swords) before you give up on the Martin series. The 3rd is arguably the best of the bunch.

Lots of good recommendations here, but i would like to add some Lois McMaster Bujold books: Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls and Hallowed Hunt.

Why even bother reading Martin's books? The series will never be finished and the last 2 books were all padding.

Bujold is amazing, but not for that fantasy/romance series. Miles Vorkosigan series is great though.

Its been awhile since I read it, but Tad Williams: Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series was entertaining while not being overly complex.
