For hardcore DVD buyers

I know everyone gets those Columbia House DVD spam e-mails (I'm a member and I still get them) and I know you usually hit delete as soon as you see the 4 DVDs for 0.49 each.

Anywayz, this month, they got several deals running for members. If you buy one DVD at regular club price, you can get as many as you want for $14.95... even pre-orders!! On top of that, if you buy 2 at a regular price of 14.95, you get both for $20. And for a few days (expiration for this is not specified) you get free shipping on all orders of 3 or more DVDs.

To really benefit from this, you'd have to get quite a few DVDs though. I'm about to place an order for 20 DVDs (1 regular price @ $30, 13 @ $14.95, and 6@ 2 for 20), with 4 preorders included in the order and the total is around $285 with about 24 bucks NY tax, so total it comes out to around just over 15 bucks a DVD!!!

If you aren't a member of CH, the best way to join and fulfill the contract is to do the 4 for $0.49 and get a 5th at 15 bucks so you only need to get three more (instead of four) @ 19.95 or more withinin 2 years. Then wait for a ridiculous deal (I did the "Buy One regular and Get two @ 50% off" deal), get three at regular price along with any other at the discounted price... and you're done. Then just hop on any monthly deal whenever you want to. I've been a member for a few months and I have no objections... except maybe the sales tax.

I am a DVD fanatic (130+ dvds currently) and to me, this is a really good deal.

LOL. ROFL.

That could be thought read like they make each $20, you get them for $10 each.

Edit: I haven't bought any dvd's lately but if $16 is a good deal per dvd then so be it. Thanks for the post.
Edit2: Welcome to Anandtech!

Columbia House is indeed a HOT deal. Check the DVD Talk Forum for more info - you are getting 7 dvds for under $10 each. With the free shipping and 40% off you get a 14.95 movie for $4 more. so 8 movies hovering closer to $9 each. good luck finding a better deal than that.

Concur with rml, pretty cold.

CH can be an excellent source for inexpensive DVDs (I've cycled thru around 25-30 accounts so far, and I'm a notorious skin-flint), but not in the manner you described.

If you take advantage of the best offers and maximize your savings, they currently work out to around $9 each shipped. And that excludes only around 35 single/double discs titles from CH's library of over 2300 titles.

Before the flames about CH begin, lemme say I was completely skeptical before I joined, based on all you hear about CH. But it truly works out great if you don't mind playing by CH's rules, which aren't that bad once you learn to use the system.

That site where DVDs are TALKed about has an entire forum devoted to CH......

Personally, I don't think it's that good of a deal. Unless all or most of the titles you want to buy aren't "enrollment selections." Otherwise, you're better off joining with one of the best codes (all listed on the dvdtalk.com forum). You then get the enrollment titles and fulfillment titles, cancel your membership, and immediately open a new one and order again. This way, it usually comes out to under $10 per DVD, sometimes as low as $8.50-$9.00.

Ha, looks like all three of us posted basically the same thing all at once. Is there a reason we aren't allowed to mention a "particular other site about DVDs," or are you just being cautious?

cold. i think those buy.com 15 off 15 or even the 25 off 25 coupons ,which didn't last very long, made the best dvd deals

good job grilling the new guy... guess it's deserved since it's the best i've found... but then again, i've only been checking out deals for about 1-2 months here... thought I could contribute something that I thought was good.

I been looking around since buy.com coupons don't discount that much anymore and reel.com trivia challenge has been gone for a while...

btw, i meant hardcore as in you'd have to purchase alot in order to "take advantage" of this deal.. just to clear up confusion

Guys, give the new guy a break. Personally, I would not sign up for Columbia House but some people might find it useful and might take a look at it (or even sign up).

Bang4DaBuc, as you know this rule, why don't you just join to get some dvd for $9 each, then cancel, re-join, cancel, repeat. Now you're paying $15 each, is this a better deal than $9 each?

Jabronie is 100% correct. CH is a GREAT deal, as long as you know how to manipulate it. Any real dealhunter would -never- take advantage of their "Buy 1 at regular price, get xxxxxx" deals, simply because they are not to the buyer's advantage.

The benefit is in the average. You join, order all your expensive titles in your initial "Get X free" shipment, then fill your commitment with the cheapest titles you can. Dvdtalk forums are the place to go if you want to learn all about how to maximize your CH experience. There are lists of expensive titles to order in your enrollment package, and lists of good cheap titles to fulfill your membership with. People over at the forums put a tremendous amount of effort into maintaining and updating these lists. Once you've fulfilled, you cancel that membership and enroll again. Most of us collectors have multiple CH DVD memberships going at any one time.

As mentioned, it averages between $9 and $10 a title for GOOD titles (with shipping already factored in). Just learn how to play the game first.
