I'm waiting for a ride to the hospital. I've been in minor pain over the last two days in my left side (lower chest). Last night I couldn't sleep and my shoulder has been sore and progressively getting worse, however I have no pain caused by range of movement -- I can bend and stretch in every direction without pain, or additional pain at least. When I take in a deep breath, my side and shoulder/neck hurts.

I don't even want to think that way...

Could be one of a million things, I hope it's one of the more benign.

Good luck!

Hope everything turns out ok. I'm sure it won't be as bad as you (appear to) think.

Hope your insurance premiums are paid up.

But, more importantly, hope it's just 'gas' or something.

I don't usually eat breakfast.

My wife told me to get off the computer and go sit down and rest... the last thing I want at this point is time to sit and think about my own mortality. I do certainly hope that it's nothing, just a pulled muscle or slept on my arm wrong or something. I'm still here, so that's got to count for something.

Why would you go to the hospital for that? Shouldn't you see your primary physician first? Or did your PCP send you to the hospital?

I have no PCP... and I'm wondering where my ride is.

He'd just send you to the hospital anyway

I'm a worrier as well big time but based on what you said I'm sure there are dozens of benign explanations.

I had that. Its a lung collaspe when there is a weak part in your lug and air is leaking out and pressing against your lung. When you breath it hurts caue the lung is expanding against the leakage air that is pushing back. Definitely go to the Hospital. Its nothing if treated early. Wait too long and it might get dangerous.

Way to diagnose a little pain over the web!!! Way to scare the crap out of someone too!!

Could also be pleurisy - was one of the worst pains I've ever experienced. Pleurisy is when the linings of your lungs become imflamed and abrasively rub against your chest cavity on every breath. Was treated by anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Pain was gone in several days.

I'm okay, my shoulder continued to get worse even after I got there. They gave me some darvaset (sp), which finally kicked in after a while. EKG was normal, so they didn't really give much concern to my heart after that. As far as the shoulder, they x-ray'd it and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, so they called it a strain and gave me a script for 800mg ibuprofin. I'm feeling alright at this point. A little agitated that there's really no explaination for the pain I was in, but other than that no worse for wear.

Glad you're ok.

It's just odd that a strain would be affected by breathing??

If it's a strain of a muscle near the rib cage it's possible that could happen. There's a multitude of possible explanations for pain and to give a preliminary diagnosis over the web like some people have is utterly ridiculous.

SunnyD, glad to hear you're doing better. Make sure to get your ass back to the hospital if the pain doesn't go away. And don't take too much Darvocet. That stuff is potent.

I agree - it's really odd as to why breathing causes pain. But what amnesiac said holds true, I've had strains and bruises on my chest/ribs before that severely affected breathing. But the shoulder issue - I'll just keep watching it. And the Darvocet didn't really affect me much, took a while to even kick in.

A while back---

I was outside walking my dog. Went over to the side of my house and was fooling with my sprinkler timer. My dog saw something and booked, which yanked my arm and spun me around. At the time, it hurt, but, wasn't too bad.... didn't think much of it. However, the next day I was in some major pain. Could barely move my arm at the shoulder level. And it got worse throughout the day. Pain felt like it was in my upper-mid back, just to the side of my spine.

That night couldn't sleep. Any deep breath hurt like hell. Next day even more pain.

Went to the dr's and got some anti-inflamatory and pain relievers. They worked like a champ, took it easy for a few days. All better. Or so I thought... a few weeks later I re-injured it (don't remember exactly how) but I still had a few pills left from the last round. Same routine, fixed again after a couple more days of rest. Took it real easy for a while after that and have been good since.

Glad it was nothing serious.
