I just wanted to put a health word in here for you guys. DON'T EVER USE LATEX. And if you can find non-latex you're the money. Most hospitals now are getting rid of latex because over time, many MANY nurses developed anaphalactic shock (an allergic reaction that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to breath, people die from it or get severely brain damaged) over time. DON'T EVER USE LATEX!!!

Really? I wasn't aware of this... hmmm...
Besides, anaphalactic shock also known as Type I - IgE mediated hypersensitivity or allergy, generally caused by internal body reaction such as Histamines.
Unless he or she ingest the latex glove that trigger the release of potent pharmacological mediators and cause bronchioconstriction, otherwise, I don't see how latex glove can promote vascular permeability and leads to organ failure.

Not to deny your mother's claim, but little more info will be appreciated.

The issue arises from the latex POWDER that is aerosolized from the gloves, which the receipient inhales. It can cause allergy, but not as often as our alarmist friend worries about. The problem arose from the onset of &quot;universal precautions&quot; undertaken in the 1980's. There wasn't enough supply, and entire batches of latex gloves were improperly cured creating allergic conditions. Modern powderless (and properly made) latex gloves won't create the allergy, but will flare it up in those unfortunates who are already sensitive.

I use over 50 pairs of latex gloves daily...10,000 pairs/year. Approximately 5000 patient visits/year, each year, in 20+ years of practice. I've seen latex related allergy, manifested by slight swelling and redness (urticaria), only on two patients in that time. Proper health history review will include questions of possible latex sensitivity (balloons, condoms, etc.). Vinyl gloves (the common medical substitute for latex) lack the flexibility and sensitivity of latex and can be used when neccessary, but I wouldn't have nuerosurgery done on me by a surgeon with them. Yes, you can have a severe reaction to an allergen, without ingestion (usually by mucosa contact), that can lead to brochiospasm. Bottom line... you'll be hit by a bus before you're killed by a condom (or latex gloves).
