For some reason I cant Ping a Comp on my same network :(

I have 2 comps networked... the main one has the internet coming into it... and my laptop is sharing the inet through a hub...

on my laptop I try to join a game on bnet in starcraft and every single game says "to much latency" likewise, no one can join my games for the same reason. On the main comp i can play games fine (but that comp doesnt run sc very good =(

ive called my isp and theyve ping'd me and i get less than 100ms ping time, and i can download and surf the web just fine otherwise...

somehow im getting a friggen ton of latency through my hub or something... any ideas on how i could fix this?

btw, ive played b.net before on my laptop, but i recently formatted and now its windows 2000 and my main comp is windows xp pro. thanks

edit update... i just pinged my desktop and it times out everytime, if that helps isolate the problem

Are you talking about using Windows XP ICS? With your internet connection going directly into your desktop, then your desktop to a hub and the hub to your laptop? If so, how long do pings to your desktop take? Have you tried plugging your laptop directly into your desktop with a crossover cable to see if that eliminates the problem?

ya, my network is exactly how you said it up there... i just pinged my desktop and the request times out every time?! this is wierd because im on the laptop on the internet right now going through the desktop


the thing is that before the format it seemed i never saw this problem... do you suppose it could be that my main comp is winxp and my laptop is win2000?

If you have the firewall enabled with XP all your pings will timeout when trying to ping your desktop. I'm not sure if it will allow you to share an internet connection and have the firewall enabled. Have you checked to see if XP's firewall is enabled for NIC that is connected to your hub?

As for starcraft not working it could be a host of issues. Again, no one will be able to join your games in starcraft if you have a firewall enabled on your internet connection. I'm not sure why you aren't able to join other games hosted by other players on bnet, do you have IPX/SPX installed?

The XP firewall shuts off ICMP by default. Go to the settings for the firewall and then go to the ICMP tab.

For your games, goto the services tab and add to ports you need -- being sure to specify the computer on your network you want to play on.

i just enabled all the services in the xp firewall options on my main comp and it works

The XP firewall isn't much anyway, but you may want to determine exactly what you need and reblock the stuff you don't.
