I love my CRT and I also love my LCD.

I can see where all the feuding is coming from-- both LCDs and CRTs have their ups and downs.

People are saying that LCDs can do just as well as CRTs can with their 8-bit color, 2ms response time, great aspect ratios, DVI, etc, but it's very expensive to get these all in one package.

This deal that the OP has shown us is great because it's a high quality CRT whose picture would match a 500$ LCD. IMO, CRT is for those of us who love our great looking picture while maintaining an affordable price.

LCDs are for two kinds of people: those who want an affordable price and aren't anal about their display, and also for those who are willing to dish out a few hundred bucks for a great-looking big monitor.

QFT, it's really not smart to just dismiss a tech entirely. People have different sensitivities and pick one or the other based on those. It is definitely true that LCD has evolved, and if you think about it, it's great that LCDs replace CRTs in offices because they typically use a lot less power. It's good for the electric bill and good for the environment.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Resolution limitations are my biggest disenchantment with LCD's. And don't let anyone tell you LCD's don't have image burn issues, I've got a couple bad corners on 2 dells to prove they do.

Do you think this monitor would be overkill for a MAME machine in a cabinet? Its just mostly gonna be 80's and early-mid 90's stuff on the pc.

LOL.

Progress, as in dead pixels, ghosting, input lag, 6bit color, backlight bleeding, gray blacks, dull whites, and AIDS?

Well spoken but the text looked better on my DELL flat...lol

I bought one of these for $400.00 about 2 years ago...maybe more. The specs are excellent but sadly many of these still left are beyond their useful lifespans. I just gave mine away a few weeks ago to a friend of mine. Washed out, hard to impossible to calibrate them in every way...color, alignment, sharpness....after 2+ years with that thing...I am now enjoying the benefits of a 19" Dell Flat. Although I must admit if Hitachi, Samsung, IBM, or Hitachi come out with a finer dot pitch aperture grille monitor...say a 22" Wide Screen Thin CRT I will be banging their doors down...GIMMIE A GOOD TUBE DAMNIT!

I love my 50lb CRT.

I can't agree that "LCD's are easier on the eyes" though. I can't stand looking at most that are under 80 refresh for too long.

Text/PC on DLP sucks balls. The non-square pixels causes problems with clarity. Not to mention replacing a bulb.

1600 x 1200 @ 100hz FTW

no lcd can touch that lag/ghost/blur free gaming

Not to mention color vibrancy and true 32bit color that only the old school Trinitron tubes can do so well.

I wouldn't trade in my Sony FW900 for any lcd, esp for gaming. There's a reason this thread is huge:

I would love to land one of those but Im scared to pay the high cost for a refurbished model off of ebay. Theres no telling what you'll get.

If you've never used and LCD, don't comment. My cheap ass TN LCD on my HP laptpop BLOWS away my crt monitor at text. Text is much sharper and clearer and much easier on the eyes. Side by side there's no comparisson. LCDs do not flicker like CRTs, so for office work refresh rate doesn't matter. PIXELS ON LCD SCREENS ARE ALWAYS ON. They don't fade and flicker like in CRT monitors. It's like each pixel on LCD has an individual set of wires going to it which keeps it always lit. Refresh rate on LCD means how many times a second a pixel can change it's color which only affects games since you'll be limited to 60 frames per second in games on LCD.

As for this deal, it's pretty good and is very tempting, assuming tubes aren't worn out. Couple years ago it would be a no brainer. If it was a FW900 24" widescreen trinitron for that kind of money or even $100 more I would've jumped in a heart beat. I think at this point I'll go with a 20" NEC 20WMGX2 LCD for $560. LCDs have come a long way. It's a spendy bastard but it should be real close to crt color wise. True 8 bit color. The only downside is I'll have to go down to 60fps in games. On the plus side, text is much sharper and easier on the eyes, no radiation, and less power consumption.

I still would love to own a FW900 Trinitron exclusively for games, but the cheapest they go for on ebay is $400 and you can't really preview to see if it's got any life left in its tube.

I've been playing on a 2001fp(not sure of the ms) and then started playing on my old school CRT. 100hz or even 85hz is worlds better on the CRT. But I only use the CRT for gaming.

I have the 24" fw900 sony crt, as well as 3 21" sony trinitron monitors. Yet, I still use my 19" lcd for everything. It's just easier on my eyes since I sit in front of a computer for far longer than I should (pretty much every anandtech reader probably falls into this category). These CRT's are a hard sale. I put up my 21 inch monitors for sale for 35 bucks and nobody wants them, so they're still sitting idle. I'll never let go of the 24" monitor though. Just something about it that's amazing beyond words if you've never seen a high res CRT. Plus, I only paid 60 bucks for it

Well you can of course use a good glare screen and then take that advantage away. I have had a DELL P1110 21 inch Ultra Scan Flatscreen which does 1800 x 1440 at 75 Hz. I don't have a card yet that will go past 1600x1200 but for gaming this is much better then my friends 20 inch LCD. I bought mine as a refurb 4 years ago and its still going strong and looks great.

The advantages of LCD's right now are size, if you want to go REALLY big and weight. For me there are lots of disadvantages, including not having that huge monitor for putting my center speaker on.

Having said all that, I think LCD's are closing the gap and there are some big 24 and 30 inch LCD's that are really gaming monsters if you have the cash to spend on them. You really need an 8800 to be able to do native though from what I have seen.

I ordered one, I hope it comes in great condition, I have seen that you can buy one of these for less then 100 bucks on ebay but from the feedback I've seen they aren't necessarily in the great condition.

Please post back with a little report after you receive it and check it out.

That would be helpful to all of us.

Thanks,

John

I'd consider an LCD, but then my stuffed Clifford wouldn't be able to sit on top of it.

More seriously though, I've got a 19" NEC fe950+ CRT I use at home, and the picture has always been awesome IMO. I've had it for a several years now. I like it better than the 21" LCDs I use at work. However, I've seen other CRTs that were just awful, like the 21" ViewSonic Graphics Series G810 CRTs we used to have at work, which were all fuzzy after a year or so of use. Meanwhile, the similar 21" ViewSonic Professional Series CRTs were okay (I think they were model P810).

I think you have good quality and bad quality on both sides of the fence. Some LCDs are great, some not so great. Same with CRT. Hard to say which is truely better. Clearly the weight/size issue heavily favors the LCD. But I like the resolution flexibility and the dark blacks the CRT has. And then there is Clifford...
