I finally broke down and purchased a nice Dell LCD and am very happy with it. But I can't bring myself to sell my big (67lb.) black Nec MultiSync FP2141SB 22" aperture grill that maxes out at 2048x1536 at 86Hz with gorgeous picture quality. As mentioned you almost can't give these away, but everyone who actually sees it is amazed at how good it looks. My wife thinks I'm nuts but all I need is a bigger desk.

I'm with you. I have a nice shiny new Dell 24inch widessceeen (2407FWP) but I can't bring myself to part with my Dell P1110 21inch flatscreen triniton made in Feb of 2000. Its still going strong, still puts out a top notch picture. I am lucky that I have a 2nd system in the office with an old 17 inch CRT thats now going into storage or garbage to make room for the Dell which just fits on that desk with 2 little cube speakers

lol, yeah it's hard to part with the old CRTs just because I can still remember when I spent so much time researching until I bought a monitor I loved. Still a little peeved that my brother let Samsung replace my aperture grill model with a larger shadow mask one though...the replacement is a POS =(

I upgraded from a 19" Trinitron (third one I've had since 99) last week to a 22" Widscreen Acer (1680 x 1050) and though I must vouch for the Trinitron's good performance, the Acer is better, brighter, and easier to read text on. The blacks aren't quite as good, but I'm a much happier user.

BTW the 19" trinitron is sitting in my Livingroom right now, I was about to give it away. Would anyone give me $60 shipped?

I have a 24" LCD, but my preference is Diamondtron > Trintron > LCD As much as I like my LCD (more than I expected) My Diamondtron BLEW it away on every level, Text was sharp, maybe not as sharp but I don't think I notice. Now blacks? day and night difference, also images look accurate. My LCD is brighter and mroe colorful, but the colors don't match up, it bothers me but I guess the longer I stay away from CRT's the more I can fool my mind into believing this LCD produce colors properly.

Also one big CRT plus for me, when I get fragged in CS:S by some stupid awper or camper I can slap it hard as sh!t on the side and it won't budge, I tried that on my LCD and I thought the stand was gonna break.

LCD FTW

Not all progress is about something being better at everything.

LCD's were created out of space and energy/heat considerations.

The problem is actually most have not experienced a superior CRT. Most have grownup now and buy LCD's since they aren't relying on their parent's funding and/or never had a good CRT to begin with.

CRT is not really debated as inferior visually by even knowledgable LCD purists. The problems with LCD's are even with the best color, it's only 'close'...you still suffer ghosting, and you are locked into native resolution to get the ultimate sharpness.

CRT's problems are just size and heat. If you have the room (my desk is about 3' deep) and room cooling they are best at performance.

High end LCD's come extremely close, and give great desk space saving as well as little heat.

I got mine today! Came with monitor, extra long power cable, and a vga/dvi cable.(vga on one end and dvi on the other) Generic brown box with plastic bags filled with expanded foam encasing the monitor. Using it right now and it is awsome! Its good to back on a trintron. My old sony died and I got a cheap samsung 17" monitor and I forgot how big a difference the apperature grill makes. I can't believe the difference when looking at my photos compared to my samsung or my other 17" flat panel, the color is amazing. Loaded up counter strike and it is awsome on this size monitor. I love that I can change the resolution and have it look perfect at all setting instead of just the native resolution. Text is also very good and is not blurry on any part of the screen. Very happy with this and would recommend!

I have never owned an lcd. Love the space savings they give. Have used many. Spoiled by my large high end crts.

LOL.

Progress, as in dead pixels, ghosting, input lag, 6bit color, backlight bleeding, gray blacks, dull whites, and AIDS?

CRT's work with my goofy flickering 3d glasses which are awesome with driving games.... LCDs don't work none.

Try playing Grim Fandango on any LCD screen. You cant because its so damn blurry to run a game at 1680*1050 on a LCD. If you run a non native res (ESPECIALLY something like 640*480 or 800*600).

Im debating buying this to upgrade from my 2005FPW. Anyone have any comments?

The main thing I hate about CRTs is the screen geometry (pincushion and trapezoid). When I used CRTs all the time, I got used to it, but now after mainly using LCDs, I can't stand the screen geometry of the CRT.

 CRT

Is nice since it can change resolution for gaming without looking like total butt. A lot of LCDs look better than most CRT monitors while at native res due to the CRT's geometry related problems, but I prefer to have the flexibility and speed. The LCD vs CRT argument mostly boils down to what your needs are, which one is superior depends on what purposes you'll mostly use it for.

I have the 24" fw900 sony crt, as well as 3 21" sony trinitron monitors. Yet, I still use my 19" lcd for everything. It's just easier on my eyes since I sit in front of a computer for far longer than I should (pretty much every anandtech reader probably falls into this category). These CRT's are a hard sale. I put up my 21 inch monitors for sale for 35 bucks and nobody wants them, so they're still sitting idle. I'll never let go of the 24" monitor though. Just something about it that's amazing beyond words if you've never seen a high res CRT. Plus, I only paid 60 bucks for it

I'd pay 35$ for a 21" crt, if it's in decent shape.

I can't agree that "LCD's are easier on the eyes" though. I can't stand looking at most that are under 80 refresh for too long.

As somebody else already mentioned, LCDs do not refresh like CRTs do.

I do have eyestrain problems with some LCDs though, especially older ones with more limited viewing angles. Sometimes the panel ends up looking sorta 3-d to me instead of flat and it throws my eyes and brain for a loop trying to find the best focus- on a CRT the pixels always look like they're in the same plane. If that makes any sense.

Have a Compaq p1210, it was great. Then it Broke, the display lost almost all brightness after being exposed to heat and smoke from a fire.
