I only post when I have something to offer. Not a three word, or one smiley post.

Yeah, me too.

Or, not and.

So do I.

Ohhhhhh. Look at all the quotes!

I mean, yea. I'd rather either post to get information, or to express my opinion. Many threads are just enjoyable to read, and don't require feed back. Other threads, when a poster poses a question, the answer gets posted once, and quoted 400 times. Never really understood why after the 10th one.

My guess is that the lurkers are better adjusted than the rest of us and their egos are not so over-inflated that they think that their response is required in every thread.

EDIT: Recommending LB as a councilor? Isn't that counter-productive if you want them to become less confused?

I peruse the forums at least once a day but I usually don't post unless I really feel the need to say something, which isn't that often. Although when I do post I usually wait a few minutes before I hit reply. That way I can come back and read what I typed and make sure it's worth saying.

i'm telling you, every once in a while the forums software screws up and sets the joined date to the start of the database rather than the current day.

I lurk here daily but don't often take the time to post, many of the threads are just entertaining to read. I mean how funny are some of the YAGT's? The debates on AT about politics and world issues are always fun as well, there is a lot of info in those threads and you get to hear many different points of view. But that whole arguing on the internet thing is so true, therefore I don't spend my time in endless arguments.

I'm not too bad of a lurker, but I don't post as much because I'm too lazy. I see a topic that really intrigues or angers me, type about half of what I'm thinking, then tell myself it's not worth the effort and hit the back button.

I don't post much on anandtech because there is too much activity to really keep up.

I did post 300 or so of my posts last semester when I had the most boring job in the world, and off topic scrolled a little slower during the daytime.

I post a lot more on smaller website forums that you can actually follow every post, and every post is at least somewhat meaningful.

My post count was really low for awhile, then I got cable modem and my post count shot up. It's tapered off a bit since then.

I wouldn't call myself a lurker, but compared to some of these guys with 10000+ post counts in under 12 months...

Same thing here...I lurk daily just to read the off topic threads. Although I don't interact and post much on the boards, it seems like one can get to know the different personalities of the regulars who do. I would never post in the political threads, I get heated enough just reading them

I told on you! So if you get smacked upside the head or get a sweet little kiss, (depending on how she takes your responses in this thread), it's my fault!

Damn she's seen the thread, now we're going to need marriage counseling!

I will fax youa coupon.

There was a thread earlier today of someone who joined in october of '99 and made his 1st post today. That person = lowest PPD ever.

Here's a question for those who prefer to lurk: is that your personality in real life? do you usually sit in the back and just listen to others speak?

EDIT Just a note. If anyones wonders why I have so many posts it is because I was once very active in FS/FT. About 90% of my posts are from there. In fact I lurked for the better part of a year before I finally even signed up.

I have a strange habit. I often type out a long and thought out reply, only to become suddenly a bit sullen and introspective. I then remeber the saying

"If you had only refrained from opening your mouth I might have thought you a philospher" I belive this was a greek philospher but I am not sure which one

Or

"It is better to be though an idiot than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt" Samuel Clemens

or Silence is Golden.

I then proceed to delete my post.

In fact on some boards that I frequent I have been a member since day one and still have only a handful of posts even though I may read them daily. I guess you could say I post, I just don't make it public

It is funny that you ask that.

A good friend of mine frequents these boards and I see him post far more than I do, yet in real life it is I that am very talkative while he is sullen and soft-spoken. Perhaps this is because of the nature of typed response. The words are in front of you black on white and their significance suddenly because just a bit more clear.
