For me it's a toss up, because I want to get super high frame rates at 1440p, but I may have to upgrade my PSU after I just bought one (in sig) to support SLI/Xfire. I'd like to see about a single 290x with a custom cooler to keep power usage down, but depending on how cool a pair of 290's with custom coolers perform, I may go with that.

In the end it will be also about best price/performance, AMD or Nvidia.

You need a "none of the above" option.

Not enough performance gain, combined with not enough demanding applications means that I skip this generation, at least for now.

"For those currently/recently in the market"

No need for a "none of the above" option given that this poll is explicitly only for those in the market.

As for the actual poll, I am waiting to see what the AIBs bring to the table on the R9-290. My daughter is patiently waiting for me to hand down my 7970.

Thanks for this!

I am in the market but not very knowledgeable on the subject so this discussion is a great help to me =)

By the looks of it, I should really just be waiting and by the sounds of it an undetermined amount of time.

I planned on purchasing the entire system at the end of November, but I can wait a little for the GPU =)

How long does it usually take for a third party product to come to market and what is the price expected to be?

I didn't vote as my opinion is uninformed, but I would do 780 Ti with the information given, as I'd like to stay away from Radeon this time around =)
I'm not sure what info you're referring to but the 290/x are gonna be fabulous with 3rd party solutions & as such they're definitely worth the wait & better VFM options IMHO than either of the 780/Ti cards from Nvidia

If I had to guess, he may be referring to the noise issues. If someone told me today, I had to buy a card and aftermarket cooling was not an option, I think the 780 makes a compelling option. The 780Ti is just too expensive for me to consider.

However, given the luxury of waiting, it makes a lot of sense to see what the R9-290 AIB coolers will bring. It would just be nice to know how long that wait is. I was ready to buy the day they were released, but I don't water cool (yet) and the noise issue is what has me waiting.

I guess that is true, for those who can't wait to get their hands on the latest & greatest in GPU realm, but from what I've read the 290/x custom cards will be released towards the end of November i.e. black friday or cyber monday, whichever comes first for AMD & their AIB makers

This is perhaps due to the fact that they'll want to have enough of these cards in stock so as to meet the enormous demand around thanksgiving.

Seems you need to upgrade from 1080P first :whiste:
Yes, I was hoping that this generation would be fast enough to give the performance I want at the resolution I want, but no, not yet...

I would be in the market if the cards were better. I think I said as much already.

Waiting for Non Ref 290 cards after almost having pulled the trigger on the 780. Money saved will go towards an SSD or something

As soon as the second water block feels like being in stock

I have two Asus cards sitting at home still unpacked. Just weighing my options since I won't be getting around to replacing the quadfire until after Thanksgiving and Newegg will allow me to return them after Black Friday :whiste:

Titan Ultra

Just waiting for it to exist.

Seems you missed the memo...

I'm leaning towards the 780 right now, but I'm waiting for aftermarket 290 and Mantle results before making any moves. However, I can only wait so long... Finally got around to getting BF4 and it really kills my 460.

In no hurry, but will probably upgrade from 7870 in 6 mo or so. Waiting for all all data and aftermarket cards for 290/290x. OR I could go with 780...depends on price/performance. Have no plans to x fire or sli and wondering if gaming at 1080p is worth an upgrade at all..(Except for 7970)

I get your point, but the fact remains you are not the target for this poll. By your own admission, the performance of these boards takes you out of this market. The poll is fine as is for it's stated purpose.

Back on topic, since I am running 2560x1600, these boards are very relevant to me. I am in the market and am waiting for AIB cooling solutions to see if they will improve the potential of the R9-290 before I make a decision.

Just bought a Gigabyte REF R9 290X along with the Arctic Acelero Xtreme III.

I don't believe the AIB coolers will be any more effective and they will be much noisier with them smaller fans buzzing compared to the Exteme III solution.

NOTE: The Extreme III uses 3 Slots and possibly 4 if the Back Plate Bracket fouls a card in say a PCIe slot located ahead of the Video Card Slot.

---------------------------------

i7 2700k/ASUS P8Z68-V Pro Gen3/Corsair H110 AIO (running @ .996v/1600Mhz to 1.376v/4600Mhz 24/7 between 36 to 67C), 4 x's 4GB sticks of Samsung MV-3V4G3D-US DDR3 running at 1.34v/1866Mhz 9-9-9-24 1T with 4GB's assigned to a RAMDisk drive to handle Win7 64 Bit Sluff and negate writes to the SSD, Samsung 840 Pro 256 SSD, 2 x's WD5001AALS HDD's in Raid-0, 1 x's WD1002FAEX 1TB, ASUS DRW-24B1ST DVDRW, Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1250 PCIe, 2nd Intel NIC for Dual Networking, XFX 850W Pro Black Black Edition modular PSU, AMD Ref Gigabyte 1000Mhz R9 290X/Accelero Xtreme III, eVGA GTX 280 in reserve for Physic's-X support, Fractal Design ARC Midi R2 case, QX2510 Samsung PLS 2560x1440 res display at 120Hz.

TOTAL Investment on this Platform including 13% HST Tax Plus Shipping is approx $2,534.00 spent over a period of a year.

Aside from Mfgr's 10 to 15% price markup selling to the CDN Market the killer is the 13% HST Tax and cost of shipping in Canada. I pd $3000 for a 386-40 DX in 1994 - LOL.

Seriously? HIS IceQ, ASUS DCII, Gigabyte Windforce, MSI Twin Frozer, Sapphire Vapor-X or Dual-X to name a few examples, have all done very well in the past over reference AMD designs. Why would this be any different?

I'm willing to wait and see. If I didn't already have a 7970 I can use while waiting, I might have been willing to grab a reference card and an aftermarket cooler, though.

Context is important...
compared to the Exteme III solution.

the Extreme III is the point of reference....

I wish I could vote both. First I'm going to buy a 290x with custom cooling, then will get a 780 when prices settle down a bit. Won't get either until the good holiday bundles kick in.

To me all cards priced much more then $100 above the R9 290 are over priced but I did settle for 290X + Xtreme III and that's something I've yet to comprehend.
