To me all cards priced much more then $100 above the R9 290 are over priced but I did settle for 290X + Xtreme III and that's something I've yet to comprehend.

That's just something you'll have to talk to yourself about in order to come to an understanding.

290 crossfire, but aftermarket versions for slightly more than 400. I would go with two reference cards and get accelero xtreme's for them, but if i'm going to spend nearly 500 per card then it defeats the purpose for me personally. I'm keeping it real close to 400 each or its a no go. Its not worth it over my 670's at 1080p. If i'm going to spend top dollar for cards then it will have to be next gen cards for a bigger increase in perf, so non ref 290's or bust if I buy now.

If I was in the market I'd go with the 290x. I'd love to put one of those monsters under water

For me I'm just going to grab a 280x for now. Come Spring I plan on a new high end build. I'll wait till then to buy high end card/s.

I've got that crazy upgrade itch to grab a 780 and OC the crap out of it. On the other hand, I know i'll be better served with maxwell 110.

Looks cool, but is it a bit big? Looks like it might be triple slot. Anyone know just how much bigger these are, and if they work in crossfire?

Remember, you are not using a Crossfire bridge any longer, so if your board allows it, you can space your cards apart by using a lower x16 slot. Allowing for a 2.5 or 3 slot solutions.

I just got my 290 today, and Gelid...but dumb me selected the wrong one...got the A version and not V2. Don't know how I did that but....I have done stupider things. Got to return the cooler and get a different one.

The bridge size is not the limitation to 3 slot solutions. They do make extra large bridges that can span 3 slots, if not 4. The problem is they won't fit in an enclosure most the time, unless you don't use an enclosure.

other than performance, I'm most interested in True Audio first (which I could just get an R7 to mess with) and Mantle second (which we still know too little about)

that being said, i really don't foresee myself ditching the 780 until 20nm upgrades are available

Here are some interesting benchmarks that were posted over at OCN comparing a 780 at 1293/1597 at 1.3V against a 290X at 1200/1400 at 1.35V:

I went with two EVGA GTX 780ti superclocked cards w/reference cooling for SLI. I have chosen EVGA for my last couple builds and been extremely happy, I was particularly excited about the holiday bundle and being able to use Shadowplay to stream to Twitch.tv in the future. Given the noise/temp of the 780ti with it's overclocking headroom a pair seemed perfect for 1440p at 120hz. They show up tomorrow, I'm so excited!

I put in 290 here, but lucky for me all these new cards and price reductions has made other people switch while I waited for a non-reference 290 and I got a really cheap 780 ASUS DCUII, so plans got changed.
And I have to say it's only drawback was that it couldn't overclock high enough because the limits in the drivers and firmware, might have to learn how to unlock/flash the bios to get all that I can out of this card.

Interesting results. It looks like so far around 75% of people are going AMD this round, with around 25% going nvidia.

A bit under 10% of the people here opted for an Nvidia Ti, though the markup for that card is so high that a single Ti sale is probably worth the profits of multiple 290s. It probably won't be enough to bring in more profits from the higher volume 290s, but they will be just fine.

I'm picking up a 290 non reference when they hit btw.

Which isn't surprising, we all knew OC R290/X smoked the 780.. it has to be compared to the 780ti OC for the real competition on performance (even if not on price).

From what I've seen on OcUK, R290/X at ~1.2ghz matches the 780ti at ~1.3ghz, but the 780ti under water and modded bios has more headroom (1.5ghz!), so thats the bonus for going with it. R290/X on water seem to top out around 1.3ghz only.
