For those opposed to the bailout - have you contacted your representatives yet?

Phone or fax is the best (most bothersome) way to reach them quickly today.

Two free faxes per email address: http://www.faxzero.com

Find phone/fax for your Senators and Representatives here: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/

[Edit] Oh, and since nothing keeps a thread on top like a flamewar, who wants to suggest a good one? Something non-typical, with a little class. Like... butter v margarine.

Wrote my state Senators, and received generic emails from their staff thanking me for my concern.

I've written daily for the last 4 days.

I somewhat regret that my folk are Republican and that they're getting blamed for partisanship in delaying the passage of Paulson's bill or TARP.

BTW, Congress is amazed at the resistance to the bill, they keep talking about the emails & responses being hundreds to one or two against the bailout.

Contacted them in favor of it.

What's going to be sad to see is when people lose their jobs and nobody will hire them, the government will create publics works projects and do so.

Hope you guys enjoy lines, because when you want food, you're going to be standing in them.

my representative isn't running for reelection and I'm voting anti-incumbent no matter what for the senate election.

This bailout will not stop that.

All it will do is guarantee the golden parachutes for the criminals.

How much will you be getting?

Haven't bothered - gave up on my senators and gutless rep a long time ago. Waste of air to holler at them.

It doesn't matter what any of us say. They're going to pass the bill. Politicians are bought and paid for.

Think of America as someone suffering from a gunshot wound and they walk into an emergency room. They need attention and fast. The right thing to do would be to triage the wound and stop the bleeding and then provide emergency care.
This bill is the equivalent of throwing a very expensive gauze pad at the wound and saying; "Here ya go! Hope ya don't bleed to death!"
The bailout itself isn't the bad thing, its the lack of oversight and regulation being put in place as a part of it that is the bad thing.

I said pro and put mine on the line but really I'm mostly on the fence. I will say that money.cnn.com just put an article up today that quanfies how lending is really tightening up and if it completely locks up, we are kind of screwed. However, I also maintain that the 700b will not be enough or even the correct answer. I don't think anybody can confidently say it will be, since 80 years ago was the closest thing to now (things change). Also, if we let all these banks fail, there are others, both domestically and internatinoally that could step in, though of course a healthy recession would come along (it will anyway, though).

Yep. 7% of American's approve the bailout plans. Yet they are going to push it forward anyways. Since when did our government care about the people? Its about money, and they're going to get it. Unfortunately for them, the people of the united states will get the last laugh when there is civil unrest.

We live in a republic. The issue is far more complex the average voter can comprehend, thus we vote for someone to represent us, learn about the issues, and make decisions about what is best with a thought to what the constituents want. This bailout is not about giving golden parachutes to CEOs that drove their companies into the ground. This is about keeping credit markets from freezing up and causing massive problems for people living on Main Street. As long as their is oversight, the tax payer money is used to buy assets at a reasonable price, and when these companies start making profits again, the tax payers get money + interest first before everyone else, then I'm for the bailout.

What percentage of people can explain the issue and the ramifications of the decision?

My congress snake (bozowell - D - IA) will vote how Pelosi wants him to. He's a party line follower - always has been. But, I did still call and express my displeasure with the current plan. I quickly outlined what would gain my support. I'm sure the lady didn't even make note of what I said just like yesterday. Oh well.

It might not, but then again, it probably will.

I didn't even get a bonus last year, despite working about 23 100 work weeks, the remainder 80 or 90 hours.

I'm an RN, all I have to do is breathe and I have a job, I suspect you'll be standing in line.

Funny because I've always agreed with you till this bailout, TARP, massive ass fuck, whatever the hell you want to call it...

It's either going to be short lines now and over quickly or long lines later and permanent. You don't fix the economy by faking it, you just delay the fall and make it harder.

Done.

I strongly oppose the original Bushwhacko plan. I know they've already broken the system so there's no way to stop the damage that's already underway. The only question is how to distribute the burden.

I have no sympathy for the financial institutions, especially those who planned and directed the wholesale looting of our nations financial resources who should be barred from receiving any golden parachute as their respective companies tank. I think many of them should get a lifetime supply of striped pamajas, institutional meals and at least an hour a day in the recreation room of an appropriate state or Federal instituiton.

I believe the issues the Democrats have put forward, including protection for "mainstreet" (for lack of a better shorthand) and a stake in the rewards of any recovery, are essential.

What fucking graves?

I'm sick as hell of multi million dollar salaries of asshats that thought up this leveraged shit, I'm sick to hell of my idiot neighbor not saving any money and driving a fucking leased BMW to his upside down house with an ARM.

Why the fuck should I pay a goddamn dime to support the system that allowed this to happen? To support the fools that forgot middle school math, abandoned reason and common sense and had "What Me Worry" tattooed on their forehead?

The truth is that it's over, it's so over it's not funny.

And good goddamn riddance to it. If that fucks with your world so be it.

My parents grew up during the depression, the stories resonated with me, I've been careful as hell to avoid getting into a position I couldn't get out of, safe job, affordable house, used cars, save money for a rainy day, whether or not you want to believe some people are actually like that is your problem.

The fuckers who did this to the economy sure as hell didn't give a shit about me that I ever noticed.

Writing and/or calling to say you're against the bailout is quite pointless -- there will be a bailout, that much is a done deal. They're just going to haggle about what form it will take, and what strings will be attached.

I wrote my senators to tell them I want the bailout to include measures to prevent something like this from happening again (in the form of better oversight), and I want the bailout to include provisions preventing the executives from getting golden handshakes from taxpayer money.
