In college, you have such a easy social gateway but I didn't put in much effort trying to make friends. After college and when you moved away leaving everything behind, how did you adjust? I'm working and going to school so I'm busy most days but I don't have much of a social life. I wouldn't mind going to clubs, bars, lounges, with friends because I'm still young but I don't have anyone to go with. My family and friends are all scattered apart and very far from where I live. I don't think I'll be hanging with my co-workers outside of work. Maybe church?

It isn't so bad at first since it is new and exciting. After a few months though it started to suck. Then it picks back up and you get used to it.

However, I still moved back after 10 months (got to do my job from home every shift). So I couldn't tell you the long run version.

Went to college. Graduated 1 year ago. Moved away. The last year has been a horrible, horrible year.

Found a new job back in my college town. Moving back.

Answer: it sucks. Don't do it unless you have really strong resolve to meet people.

Went to College, worked full time for a year, and worked for another year full time while going to grad school living at home (never left home). I moved out @ age 23 to work in Silicon Valley (from Orange County) and I am having a blast. I got a great job at a great company. I got my GF to move up and we are now renting my Uncle's rental townhouse.

We have everything we need, actually more than enough of everything. We really look forward to the weekends so that we can go explore San Francisco or just venture forth and look around the Bay Area. We have a great natural wildlife preserve just down the street that we love taking our bikes on.

I have a decent amount of family about 40 miles away in San Francisco and I have some friends from college / my previous job who work in Silicon Valley. My GF and I are getting along great and we are having even more fun than when we both lived in SoCal (we both lived at home with our parents until now). My GF found a contract job within a month of moving up (right before the economy went really sour) so we are all set for now.

Had I moved out when I graduated college, I would NOT have gotten this job (since I would not have enough big company experience). I also would not have landed my Uncle's townhouse(since it was rented out at the time) and I would never have met my awesome GF. At the time, I literally felt like my life was pushing me up here. My previous job was getting dull, and I just got the feeling I was getting tired of Orange County. I guess sometimes you just have to go where life is nudging you.

Mind you this really would have sucked if my GF didnt move up here. It really really really helps having someone you know and love be there for you so you can support each other.

I forgot to add, if you are going to move somewhere outside your hometown, it really helps to find a hobby. My hobby was to learn to cook, which really impressed my GF who then promptly learned to cook when she moved in with me. We now cook 5 days a week for dinner and explore the wonderful restaurants here the other two. We also find time to have a cup of coffee and some snack/cake in the afternoons on weekends to make the day better.

Both of us are now total foodies and it is hard not to be in the Bay Area.

It can spell the end of your social life unless you count coworkers. So unless you're the kind of guy that makes friends easily and often, its better to take a pre-purchased female with you.

Well, I moved from Pittsburgh,PA to lafayette, LA for employment. So far its ok, but i have been here for less than a year. I have met a bunch of people via work (transplants like myself) and via Facebook. Facebook has helped me get invovled with some local groups and meet people in the community/other people with similiar hobbies.

All in all, the physical moving in the hardest part. Adjusting to the new area is all up to you. It took me some time, but I have met people only after a few monthes. Most of the new hires I hired on with, didind't know anybody locally,so it made it easy to bond with people.

Ps. I am contemplating moving again, b/c at this point, i can always travel to visit friends/family. Or i might move again to pursue more interesting job opportunites. not sure what I want to do, but at this point, its only money and i'm still young .

I moved from NYC to San Diego, got laid off after 2.9 months, moved back.
No regrets, going or coming back. Worth the experience, but SoCal is not my cup of tea.

im about to move to new city, where i only have a single young coworker

gonna try something like this ^^...facegroup transplant group, or meetup.com or some activity/hobby-based group

if youre into running, biking, etc, you can probably form social groups from that

i moved to baltimore because osme of my friends i went to college with were from Towson. So i had some friends here and I have met some cool people here while doing an MBA. Everything just happened really quickly and I am still here now.

I'm pretty outgoing so i'll talk to just about everyone...to each their own
