Actually for a turkey it is incredibly effective. Turkey's aren't like mammals. They have a VERY long kneck that is much more exposed than trying to hit a vital area in their main body.
With these types of arrows you can go for a much more precise and quicker kill. There is less maiming and since almost every turkey hunter is in it for the food, you don't have to worry about the arrow going through the stomach or intestines of the bird and really making a mess of the cleaning process.
How do you think your Thanksgiving turkey get's put on your plate? There's some guy with a butcher knife that lobs it's head off, cleans it out and defeathers it, and then it winds up in the grocery store freezer.
This really is no different.
