For those who missed the 12x10x32 CD-R/RW at Compusa, they have the zip 12x4x32 (with BurnProof) for $129.99 (may be for $99)

Gdog, default jumper setting is Master and the a possible confliction with the cdrom is probably unlikely. I think you may have a bogus drive. Upgrading didn't help, did you try a different burning program? Maybe it's the type of media you are using, is it rated to 12x? Did you try burning at a slower speed? If it continues to freeze in the same place, I suggest you exchange/return it. Hope that helps.

Call the number on the rebate slip.

1-800-510-2586

They told me the rebate is also valid for the 12x4x32x unit

Help me. Is that a Compusa rebate form, or an Iomega form? I didn't bother to pick up the rebate form at Compusa, thinking I could just grab it off the Iomega site.

agh!!!! THIS IS A NIGHTMARE!!!
at 12x, it inevitably ends up freezing (well not burning anymore) at some point, the point has been changing and I am wondering if it has to do with what i am doing while burning. All I am doing is surfing the net while burning at 12x. if that is the problem, some good burnproof has down for me

gdog,

Try nero, it's the best burning program out there. (for instance it converts the mp3 files to wave files on the fly!!!) I am about to shut down install and burn a disk or two and see how it goes. Make sure you have caching enabled for your files.....

Good luck

I am shutting down to install I will let you guys know how it goes...

Just got the drive... (yes I was real tempted to buy 3 or 4 but I thought I would let some other guys have a chance at it...) I had to go to two stores before I found the drive, so I know that sinking feeling when your drive isn't available...

Ok, using nero I am attempting to burn a 450meg disk. I am about to start some mp3's and see how the burning process goes from there...

One quick observation is that my computer is much less responsive with this new drive while burning than my Yamaha 8x4x24x... but it's been 4 minutes and the disk is almost done, hell it might be finished by the time I finish typing this...

hell it's done!!!!!!!!!!!! 450megs in 4 minutes!!!!!!!!!! 12x is sweet... Now I just have to wait to see if it's a coaster...

And......

nice drive burned perfect fresh out of the box

so the rebate is good for the 12x4x32 Drive? I am waiting to open mine until I get a reliable answer. Anyone 100% positive that the rebate is good? (and got it from a CompUSA corporate manager?....not a CSR)

I'd like to thank SOHO and others like SOHO who buy just one drive and leave the rest for others. Too many greedy pigs out there buying up all the good deals. Remember, temperance is one of the four virtures.

o.k. people.
I just bought the Iomega 12X4X32 at CompUSA (memphis superstore)
and they have a bunch of them. The 8X4X32's are everywhere.
I downloaded the files to upgrade the firmware, but I'm not
exactly sure how to go about this. I have 3 files...
bp90_327.bin I know that is the firmware upgrade file.
FlashTool243e.exe Is that a DOS flasher ?
WinFlash243e.exe Is that the windows flasher ?

I would rather do DOS if possible.
Here is the kicker....The WINFLASH.HLP file is in Japanese or
something. Hence, no good to me.
How about a quick rundown somebody ?
I've flashed motherboard bios several times and always try to be
sure of what I'm doing first.

Thanks,
mathwiz

i contacted iomega and the person i talked to said that they are unsure of whether or not they will honor the $30 for the 12x4x32. I told her i purchased the drive form compusa and she said that their may be an exeption for the rebate for compusa purchases only. She said dont count on the rebate. I contcted corparate compusa and they still had no FIRM answer. they said that if your rebate doesnt come you may have to work it out with your local store. After hearing all this i dont think there will be $30 check heading my way. Just my .02

Tweekah -- when you say you "cannot flash under Win2K", what do you mean? I flashed to 3.27 just fine under Win2K Server -- no error messages, and the drive works fine (well, as fine as it did -- DirectCD is still giving me fits).

i thought my drive was fine, but the problem is happening again, i burned at 12x (a different cd) and left, when i came back it had stopped and was not receiving any more megabytes, the megabytes left was staying the same number and it looked like it was operating, but didn't actually do anything, not an actual feeeze, just stops burning

JeffChrisope: The flash program I had would not let me run it under 2k Professional. However I just stuck it on another machine flashed and stuck it mine. Works great. I didn't find the DOS utility (which you probably used). So I was pretty obscure about saying it didn't flash under 2k.

Gdog: That's what burnproof is. If your data stream is not efficient, it stops the burn till it can continue. Glad to hear things worked out.

Gdog: I had the same problem you are describing. The burn would start but right after the TOC was burned the process would stall. I uninstalled Adaptec software and tried using NERO. Works great now.
