Ok so university time means a new computers. Great. So i have a Geforce now. Spent today getting it to work in Linux. the Asus A7V doesn't like windows 98 and promptly went "urrrgg.." and hang. So now I am in 2000 and linux.
Ok so those of you with problems running the Geforce in linux. Redhat especially well this is for you.
I basically got the binary distro from Xfree86.org and dispite the warnings about dire config problems and such i went ahead and over wrote my old install.
Then i got the nvidia driver distribution. The RPM doesn't work. It's a thing for the future when Redhat has Xfree 4 and 2.4 kernel. Get the tar balls. you'll need the drivers and the kernel modules. Don't worry it's not hard to do.
After getting the tar balls i untared them and running according to instructions installed them.
AFter that i followed instruction and ran "XFree86 -configure". Rebooted and copy the resulting XFree86config to /etc/X11. I ran as root and the file was created in /root.
Ok so wonderful. I edited the new config file to get my NetMouse PRo to work. Then i used startx.
Woa.. big problem Gnome and Enlightenment has disappeared! So what to do? Well go into your home dir and make a file all .xinitrc or edit if it's there. you need this line: "exec /usr/bin/gnome-session". After that restarting X you'll get your old gnome and such back. At least for me it did.
Anyhow now I am happly using my Xfree 4 and going to do the DRI soon.
Anyone did that part? Cause i would like to know how you did it.
