i have cable service with adelphia cable.. and i use dhcp to pull an address from them (although, even after a computer reboot, or modem reset.. the same ip will pull). the ip will change with different computers hooked up (same modem).. and if you change BACK to a computer from being on a different one, the ips will stick... it almost seems as if each computer has a hardware hash sent to adelphia... er.. uhm.. yeah anyway. do you think that if i specified an ip to use (as opposed to dhcp), would that ip pull (if it's available?) basically i just am too lazy to try it out and reboot and blahblahblah... thanks

If your provider provides Static IP call them, and can get one.

If your account is a Dynamic IP account (which is usually the case in inexpensive home accounts) there is nothing that you can do about it, the ISP's server is incharge.

DHCP ties the issued IP address to the MAC address of the host (for the duration of the lease and/or until the addresses are scavenged).

You can hard-address the router/host with the appropriate IP address, but if the system ever does issue you a new address, you may be interfereing with someone else's access (the person that get's your old address).

Many ISPs give you what amounts to a permanant lease on the address, it's just easier for them to configure the system for DHCP. Try asking the tech support folks at your ISP what their plans are for using/managing the DHCP addresses. If they indicate that the address is pretty much yours for the duration, then put in the hard address, and forget about it.

Unless there's a problem with your modem/router, why screw with it?

I've had an AT&T / @Home DHCP-supplied IP address for over a year now. The modem has been off & on several times (while I mess with the wiring), and I always get the old address back.

i've had att@home for 2 years now...they are DHCP , but it was always the same IP...so i just ping my @home computer name (with suffix) and it returns an IP address...then i use the gateway (which is usually just my IP address but ending in zero) and the subnet (255.255.255.192 is pretty typical). it may take a few guesses, but i got it. and it's worked for a long time now. this allows me to call my computer whatever i want ( i don't need the @home computer name)

if you're having trouble, you maybe be able to call them up and ask what your subnet is or whatever, but i'm not sure if they'd tell ya

i should mention that the router involved is windows 2000's RRA... i didn't have $100, so i through together a system from parts... 500hmz/96mb ram... it gets the job done.. how would that change what scottmac was saying? can i just go into the properties for the "external" NIC and specify the address there?
i mean.. i'm using a third-level domain to route to my ip... but i hate having to go update.. and i was possibly considering getting a regular domain tied to my ip (yes i know there's additional issues with DNS servers and all.. but my point is keeping the static ip, since the net takes a few days to catch up to any changes)
i really appreciate the help

My cable ISP uses DHCP. I've installed a hardware router and set it up to renew the lease on the IP indefinately. I have yet to see my IP address change since doing that.

You can renew the lease yourself, but it's tedious. I've heard of software that does it, but that's about it - I've only heard about it.

My IP some times stay for few days some times change every 24 hours.

The whole issue is ridiculous, it is like I will look for "Times Square" in every city because there is Times Square in New York.

Each ISP has is own arrangement check with them.
