i don't see BMW, toyota and honda putting out commercials saying their cars are better than such and such.

No, having people judge your product against the competition is what you do when you're losing the race with a product that you know to be better.

Case in point: Pepsi.

You people let your anti-dometic car attitude influence you too much.

it's a commercial... i'd want to see the features of a car and how special they are. i can be my own judge and find out whether the fusion is better than other cars. i don't need a bunch of actors telling me that it's better.

which is a shame really. i do think the fusion has decent looks and is mechanically sound.

and IIRC pepsi has been winning and making lots of profits compared to coca cola.

edit: and just looking at that commercial... "you can push it more towards the edge" and "it has a more throaty sound"??? surely people will buy a mid-size family sedan because of those 2 factors.

if they want to appeal to the performance crowd, bring over the focus ST and the s-max.

They need a commercial like that to overcome people's prejudged notion that Ford makes inferior cars. Most Honda and Camry owners wouldn't even bother to LOOK at the Fusion's specs, and that's what they're trying to get past with that commercial.

If you didn't know what I was talking about when I mentioned Pepsi, you must be really young. Don't you remember the Pepsi Challenge?

Six words. That's all it took you to demonstrate that you don't know what case in point means, and you missed the point of my post. I wish I had the command of the English language that you have, it usually takes me a lot more words to make my point.

Seems like a good ad to me. It goes after the Camry and Accord buyer who may want better styling, handling, and AWD.
Accord and Camry are fine cars, but they are boring to look at, boring to drive, and they don't have AWD, so it makes sense that Ford would advertise its advantages in those areas to potential Camcord buyers who may want a little more of those.

AWD is awesome for the snow. People just need to remember that AWD/4WD don't mean a thing if the tires are bald.

but what im saying is that by making such a commercial does NOT help...

and i remembered the pepsi challenge. my reaction was "oh give me a break you expect me to drink pepsi instead of coke because of actors say that it tastes better...."

so, this ford commercial has done the same to me, and i can imagine to a lot other people. it just looks like a cheap shot propaganda.

instead they could have spent the money and effort in making the european focus cheaper, or bring over the mondeo, or just improving their own damn cars instead of a commercial that essential says "hey look at me i'm better than toyota and honda"

I still have yet to see any valid proof that they used a V6 top of the line accord and Camry XLE.

Camry and Accord have perception of quality that exceeds actual quality. Not to forget to mention both cars are boring, plain, A to B transportation (Accord to less degree).

This marketing addresses just that: Ford is suffering from bad perception by consumers.

this is a moot battle, a redesigned accord will be available in a couple months.

Your right I have seen no proof from Ford being transparent and up front about the models tested. Just shows the smoke and mirrors marketing BS they are trying to use.

This shouldn't even be a question.

So who's providing you with the tin foil hats, Honda or Toyota?

Have you seen the new 2007 Tundra commercials comparing the size of their disc brakes (and other parts).

Not as blatant, but propaganda nonetheless.

I don't know why you keep mentioning actors, because I think it's far more likely that you're wrong than that you're right. Think about it - why use actors and risk having that exposed? A much more valid criticism would be that they selectively show only the people that prefer Pepsi or Ford, and that doesn't necessarily prove that the majority prefer it.

As far as Pepsi taking better than Coke or vice versa - for proof look no further than Diet Coke. It tastes more similar to Pepsi than Coke. That is intentional - they were losing market share to Pepsi, largely because people preferred the taste of Pepsi. Need more proof? Look at New Coke. They made that taste more like Pepsi/Diet Coke for the same reason. Of course they did blind taste tests and people prefered the new formula over the old - but then they released it and it was a huge failure, because many people buy products for reasons other than it being the best product. Like a dislike of the product's ads, for instance.

Saying they should have spent marketing money on making the European Focus cheaper... yeah that makes no sense. It doesn't matter how good or how cheap your product is, marketing has a huge impact on sales. And they are improving their cars. And if they've improved the Fusion to be better than Toyota and Honda, then I really don't see why you'd fault them for bragging about it unless you're a Honda/Toyota fanboy.

much of "domestic cars are $hit" is a matter of perception, now, not fact. ford and GM seem to be getting things back together and making competitive/desirable products.

Right, and that's exactly the perception Ford is trying to overcome with these ads. Ads don't sell cars, they just get people into the dealership. Ford just wants to get people into the dealership again so they can see for themselves if their cars are still bad.

I agree, Fords are better now, as evidenced by their Focus. Whoops, nevermind.
