I call bullshit, good sir!

For certain tasks, particularly in other countries, a pickup is the IDEAL vehicle:

When I was in Spain I didn't see a single pickup truck the entire week we were there. Nor did I see many SUVs, they are almost non-existent there. Lots of small cars and some vans but no trucks or SUVs. Lots of scooters and motorcycles too.

Even out in the country where there was nothing but olive groves and vineyards you didn't see any trucks.

Beautiful country. I would like to go back there.

No one in the US can back up a trailer properly...trailers are out for a large chunk of the population.

Yes, no one ever thinks to tie down the load in their pickup bed...pickup owners are so stupid. They all drive around dropping stuff at every bump...
They can't even properly haul drywall, that's why you never see drywall in a pickup...

This is so true. I used to work for a car rental company that used a Ford F150 to tow cars to clients (tow dolly) and I have driven those extensively in the early 90s and got pretty good at backing them (which is very tricky because if you get the car going one way the dolly goes the other way and it becomes a real mess fast). Backing a regular trailer is a piece of cake in comparison. By the way, the trucks we used were very basic single cab short bed trucks with a straight 6 cylinder engine and we would tow fullsize cars and even minivans with them. Those were great trucks. Why trucks are so fucking big now is beyond me.

I avoid following pickup trucks with crap in the bed especially on my motorcycle because pickup truck drivers are notoriously bad at securing stuff in their trucks.

People forget, but the F150 from the 90's had a 4.9L i6 that put out only 145hp (though with plenty of torque), and were tow rated (depending on the rear end ratio) over 5000lbs.

I'm not sure what you are saying here...

Somehow pickup trucks ruin the countryside?

They are better than the pickup drivers, somehow, and they have to point it out.

Just don't point out their forms of excess.

Every weekend? What do you need that much wood for? :sneaky:

It's called home renovation. (And it's not just wood)

Look, I'll admit that I too got sucked in by the marketing and bought a truck at one time despite it not really fitting my lifestyle.

I take exception with the word "too."

Maybe you were influenced by marketing. I carefully analyzed my available options and decided that owning a pickup made the most sense for my lifestyle (land owner, working on home renovation).

Two observations about pickup owners:

1. They report the highest mpg they've ever had as there everyday gas mileage.

2. They claim they use there truck to haul stuff all the time.

I call BS on both points and since my initials are BS I know something about it...

Brian

As for #1, that's not exclusive to truck drivers.

For #2, you can call BS till you're blue in the face. I'll keep on hauling stuff.

No day is complete without a few juicy rationalizations.

Just that they don't exist there. Nobody has them, not even farmers.

That's because European countries taxes jack the prices up so high on gas that they're not worth the cost over there.

It not a matter of the foolish "Europe is more sophisticated, advanced, blah, blah" bullshit. It's purely economic why pickups don't exist there.

You also pay taxes on engine sizes too.

Who said anything like that?

It's purely economic why pickups don't exist there.

And yet they still manage to farm, build things, make a living etc.

Not to mention that the U.S. is larger than Europe as a whole so everything is more spread out. It's easier to have bigger vehicles here.

I am such a loser, I have never own a car with 200+ hp or weight more than 3300lb.

I drove a 1st gen focus hatch for 300k km,
canoe at the top? np
Tow my fishing boat? np
big items? put the back seat down and I able to fit 16 tires into it.
Sod or soil? drove by uhaul pickup a $25 per day trailer

With all that I am still on my original clutch.

I also owned a beater Mazda MPV 160hp van that never let me down.

I am sure a lot of people really need a truck for work, but for the rest of the people it is more like they "can"

Ya, replace all trucks with small hybrid vehicles. That will reduce oil consumption by 5% if you are lucky.

Yeah, forget conservation... we should all be driving these.

I'm curious, when you made up that statistic why did you choose 5%? I mean, why not 4% or 1%? Since you're just making stuff up now.
