Ford Raptor as new DD?

So recently I've been strongly considering ordering a 2014 SCREW Raptor as a daily driver. I currently daily drive an '08 Evo X; however, I'm in the mood to change it up and I've been considering going with a nice truck for quite some time. I would be using it off-road as much as possible, but realistically it would spend most of it's life on the pavement (as I'm sure the vast majority of pickups do). I'd probably sell the Evo after the initial purchase and maybe consider picking up another sporty car / sports car / bike down the road (possibly a C5 Z06 after stingray sales take off).

Anyone have any opinions on the Raptor in general as a DD? I know I obviously could buy a used / stripped down truck and build it to be more off-road worthy than the raptor for less money. That being said, I don't want a stripped down truck... and I don't want a 5 year old truck with a mish-mash of parts (just my opinion / desire). Gas mileage doesn't really bother me. I can afford it - and I don't have a long commute. While I would occasionally love the ability to tow / haul, I know that the raptor's payload and towing is significantly lower than other F-150 models and other 1/2 ton trucks. I would be likely to have something like a dirt bike or 2, small cargo trailer, etc... I have no plans to buy a large boat, camper, etc... I have test driven 2 of them, and I really like the ride!

Anyone make the jump from a sporty car / sports car to something like a Raptor, F-150, hell even a jeep and love it despite it being a polar opposite vehicle?

What say you AT garage?

Honestly I would never touch the raptor. You'd be better off to get a diesel truck(dodge cummins) and a jeep.

I really like the Raptor but I consider it completely impractical as a DD. But hell, no reason you shouldn't do it if that's what floats your boat.

I'm interested in your rationale for this suggestion? I like both vehicles... Wouldn't consider a jeep other than a 2012+ rubi as a dd though as I'm not a huge fan of the previous engines. I don't have the garage space to support a cool project jeep. Also would need to go with an unlimited for the extra space for a dd (one of the primary reasons I would be giving up the evo) . In all honesty in my limited experience driving even the newest ones they don't feel anywhere near as nice as the raptor on the road... Despite being much smaller and more agile.

I'd love a big turbo diesel... But they have pretty much every negative that the raptor does... And some of their own. Furthermore I don't need the extra towing capacity.

No way in hell I'd do that.

Everytime I see those Raptors I just think, "fucking douchebag." And what do I see in the driver's side every time? Redneck. In the passenger seat, if anything, is a bimbo blonde pancaked in makeup and with a fake tan. Anecdotal evidence and confirmation bias be damned.

That said, I do plan on going the pickup truck plus motorcycle route (Motorcycle being the DD). I wouldn't buy something like that because the towing capacity is so much lower. (If I am buying a truck, I plan to fucking use it like one) Similarly, if you REALLY want to go off road, you're just basically throwing thousands down the drain since it's brand new because it will fucking get wrecked when it comes to cosmetic damage. You'll have so many chips, scratches, dents, and permanent damage to the truck that it'll look like shit even when you clean it up. Nothing but a professional body shop could fix it... That or new panels.

Just consider that. But, if you want to throw money down the drain... whatever.

So just to clarify... I certainly wouldn't be using it to its fullest abilities off road. I doubt that I would ever be pushing it far enough or often enough to beat the hell out of it. As far as price... I can get a new one for invoice. Fully loaded that is a hair over 50k. If you have checked out the used market for them.. They have been holding value very well for a truck (really for any vehicle) . One could make the same case for against buying a jeep or any other off road capable vehicle as far as body damage.

If I considered something like a loaded fx4 I wouldn't be saving a whole hell of a lot... And I do want the creature comforts that are available... So I would be getting leather and all in that type of truck too.

Not sure why a normal truck that is a few grand less but will have significantly more depreciation over 5 years would be a better choice. Especially if I don't need the extra towing capacity. 8000 lbs would allow me to tow a vet on an open trailer pretty easily a few times a year.

At a shop I used to work at a customer brought his brand new 2012? I think in. This was in the summer of 2011. Took a couple of us out for a spin down the road. No dirt locally unfortunately. Got to check it out and pick his brain for a bit the whole time. Cool guy. Awesome truck! Comfy, killer power and if you'll really be doing some off-roading you won't be disappointed. I'd get one if I had the money.

Keep in mind the towing capacity is lower because of the software rear end springs. Not sure I'd push 8000 but I'd imagine a Vet should be fine. Great DD trucks too with lots of creature comforts...shit mpg...though you aren't worried about that if you're considering it.

Post some pics when you get it!

Wait for the 2015.

If you buy a new F-150 before next autumn you will kick yourself.

Translation: Me want, me can't have.

Not everyone can afford a Raptor, and not everyone that can afford one even wants one of the damn things or likes them for that matter. But posts like this wreak of envy.

So I have been looking into the new 2015s quite a bit... I'm kinda worried that they may kill off the raptor and make a new lightning as the new svt truck... Which would be awesome in its own right but probably not something I would jump on... You do raise a good point though...

Uh, no. I would never buy the thing. It's hideous and screams attention whore.

I'm actually very curious what you would recommend? I'm also curious as to what makes the raptor hideous - given that I probably would be getting one in black, white, or blue and wouldn't be getting any of the graphics. It just looks like a nice truck to me (again I realize that opinions vary).

I'm certainly not sold on the raptor - I've considered some of the other vehicles mentioned on this thread (and at least test driven quite a few other utility vehicles).

It's one of the most capable offroad production vehicles you can buy. Aren't you still in high school? Lemme guess. You'd never buy a Ferrari either.

If he's really going to use it for off-roading a lot then sure. That's where I'm skeptical. He might say he will use it at every chance, but how many chances are we talking here? Is he willing to part with how much value he'd lose over going off-road with it a lot?

How do you feel about other SVT vehicles?

Nothing good.

Actually, I would like to buy a nice sports car. Realistically, I can't afford that and I would probably try to stick to motorcycles on the track. (More affordable but still quite expensive)

Again, OP, if you're doing this every weekend already... Go for it. But, I really doubt you will.

I thought I made it quite clear that it would only see occasional off-road use. I want something that allows me to carry more toys and people comfortably than my current sedan. It'll be on road for the vast majority of it's life. That being said, the raptor rides quite a but nicer than pretty much every other truck that I've test driven. Having the off-road features is a nice to have. I do want a 4x4. I have considered several SUVs but I would prefer a bed for my mountain / road bikes, kayaks, camping gear, scuba gear, etc... I'd like to be able to drive on the beach, go to the local off-road park (Rausch Creek in Pa), etc... while still having a relatively nice full-featured interior. I'm not going to be pre-running baha.

Nothing good about any SVT product = useless opinion for automotive enthusiasts. Say what you will about Ford, but the SVT team has done some cool shit.

If you like it, want it, and can afford it, why the hell not? You only live once!

I've got a co-worker who has a 2013 Raptor that is his daily driver. I think he said that he gets around 12 mpg driving it in the city. But he lives less than a mile from work so thats not really a big deal.

It's a pretty nice truck, and while it isn't something I would ever buy, I have realized that a decked out tahoe costs about the same and is a pretty mediocre vehicle compared the raptor.

I've done the opposite... went from a truck to a sporty car.

When I worked from home, I picked up a 4x4 F-150 because I knew the bad mileage wasn't a factor since I didn't have a work commute. I liked the truck a lot, owned it for 3 years before I sold it (at the time it was a brand new 2010 when I got it).

Then I started commuting to work contracting and eventually got a serious contract gig after I bought my house that was to be long term (I'm still here). So I sold it at a whopping loss of $7k-$8k or so (after 3 yrs that's pretty dang good in my book!) and bought a Focus. Somehow I managed to drive 5mo in that car but got fed up with the room so swapped that for a Grand Prix to see how I would like it as a DD (The GP was basically a trade I made money on at the time).

I finally went from that to a Mustang and I gotta say, as a DD I like it way more. I manually calculated my MPG last time and even got 28.2mpg.

All that said, if my commute wasn't the 30mi one way I drive now, I'd have loved a decked out F150. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I'd go the Loaded FX4 route, Even though a Loaded FX4 and Raptor are pretty close in price, ON THE STICKER, the FX4 usually has 6000$+ in rebates that the Raptor NEVER gets. Last Fall I could have driven a 2012, Leather Luxury package, Every option, Screw FX4 off the lot for 38k after all the rebates. Similar 13' are now around the same 38k price since 14' will be showing up soon. I ended up with a new 12' Scab 4x4 XLT loaded for 28.5K
