Take a GMC 3500 offroad at 80mph and tell me how long your teeth stay in your head...

I've done it in a 3500 Dodge diesel.. though I never had traction at my rear wheels until I was going faster than 65mph(ok just rough dirt roads).. And like the OP said, he probably wont be going off road all that much. Going with a 2500 diesel will make the ride better and you will have enough power that you feel like you've got a real truck.

Real trucks don't have spark plugs.

I came from a diesel to my tundra and the stock suspension is night and day smoother on the tundra. Put a carli suspension on the Dodge diesel and you'll be set.

I am all for the Raptor. I love the truck. Doesn't the suspension have like 26" of travel or something crazy....like a Baha truck.

That's one of the big points that seems to get lost in some of the suggestions for some of the other vehicles, It owns on dirt and mud, and without major warranty killing changes to the car, there really isn't a decent vehicle to compete with it. On the same side, its as fast as on the road without sacrificing ride as any of the other suggestions and again without warranty killing upgrades. It's easily one of the more multipurpose fun rides a person can get.

Ya, I use to think this until I bought my 5.0L F150. Granted I haven't owned a "post EPA" Diesel truck but I'm never going back to a Diesel unless I plan on towing 24/7 with it. None of the Current Diesels are going to last the 300k+ miles that the old 7.3L Power stroke and 5.9 Cummins do and make no sense to purchase since Gassers have caught up in "daily driver" mileage. Also gas has been quite a bit cheaper in the past few years, I loved my 20-21mpg powerstroke 7.3L when Diesel was cheaper, but I'm liking my 20-22mpg 5.0L even more!

While I think the Raptor does look awesome and I see them quite often here in Florida. They are really a piece of crap when it comes to ability. They have serious engine problems. And the off road ability are mediocre given the price and purpose of the car. If I had 50k to blow on a truck. I would look at a fully loaded dodge 4 door 3500. Or a GMC 3500. IF you need that kind of power. I think the dodge has the best interior and smoothness of ride. I love those trucks. I do think the GMC looks better though. It is a tough call. Many of my neighbors have the different types of trucks and they shop in the high end section for cars. All of them have said the new Ford Trucks are complete garbage after buying them. One has gone through two engines already.

When I worked as project manager for Centex everyone had pretty nice trucks. While I did not have one the Dodges always had the best interiors of the group. I am typically a Ford fan(I want a corba sooo bad) but their new trucks are def lacking.

hard to take a quality knock seriously from someone talking up dodge trucks

which are great, until the tranny goes....again.(though you did purely mention interior quality)

the big problem with the fords seems to be stripping out spark plugs

As stated...the design will change in 2015. Best bet is to buy a used one from 2009-2011. See how you like it...then trade up when the new ones come out if you still have it in your system.

I bought a 2009 F150 with 20k miles on it in Feb.... You can find low miles on 3-4 year old trucks if you look....thanks to gas prices.

They only made the Raptor for 2010+ and the SCREW version for 2011+. Loaded, used, SCREW Raptors in the 2011 - 2013 range are selling for pretty much what I can order a 2014 for given that I can get invoice pricing. I'd literally save next to nothing unless I managed to find something that had crazy high mileage. Why buy a loaded 2011-12 with 20k on it for 49,500 when I can buy a brand new one exactly how I want it for 50,500-51,000k that is 2+ years newer? I'd probably consider a used FX4 before a used raptor... but even with that you can get great deals on new FX4's now with all the dealer rebates / incentives.

NADA on a 2012 loaded with 30k (49k clean retail): http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2012/Ford/F150-Pickup-V8/SuperCrew-Raptor-4WD/Values

KBB on a 2012 loaded with 30k ($55k in excellent condition dealer retail): http://www.kbb.com/ford/f150-superc...144|true|4817146|true&pricetype=retail#survey

Edmunds seems to be the only ones that puts the same truck at around 41k... and I have yet to see anything around that from a private party, retail, ebay, etc... I've heard reports of them going for quite a bit more than that at used car auctions...

Note that I'm still not 100% sold on buying one and am considering quite a few other options (even things in a different category - as I've always wanted a Z06). If I were looking to buy a regular F-150, I would probably wait until the new ones came out in 2015. That being said, as it's an SVT vehicle... there is really no guarantee that they will even continue making the raptor. All SVT vehicles end up being limited production in some form or another.

What statistical support do you have that supports your contention regarding the Raptor engine?

In addition, while you may have had a good experience with a Nissan Titan, it has repeatedly bene ranked among the worst pickups on the road in the US, especially in terms of reliability. I'll take those rankings over anecdotal evidence any day.

I have also looked seriously at the Raptor, but for me it would not be a daily driver. A co-worker has a Raptor as a daily driver and other than parking, he loves it. He has to park across the street because it won't fit in the garage in our building. His wife likes it and so does everyone who rides in it. Black SuperCrew (if I buy, I am going to get the SuperCab).

Mileage is bad, as you know, but he doesn't care. And another co-worker ran the numbers, like someone in this thread, so you also know it is not significant. If you are looking Ford, I think the Raptor is the logical choice. I am also considering the Ram, but I want to drive the new light-duty diesel. I know, not really the same, but with the diesel I might be willing to drive to work occasionally. My commute is 40 miles each way. I guess that falls into the category of alternatives.

My only other suggestion for the features you are looking for based on cars I have looked at is the Grand Cherokee. I like the Overland Summit if you are looking premium, and love the SRT. However, I want to spend some time with diesel Grand Cherokee, too. Also, when I start looking at the SRT I have to consider the Cayenne. Not sure why I don't consider the X5, as my daily driver is a 335i. I might have to look again.

Conclusion, the Raptor as a daily driver is easily done if you have parking, and other than that I don't think you will have complaints. And you mentioned this earlier, but with the 2015s coming soon, it is hard not to wait and see if they make the Raptor. But 2014 has the special edition red, if you want a unique color from the factory. Good luck.

I don't have any statistical data to backup anything. I understand and have read plenty of hate on the Nissan Titan. The owners that I have asked have not had those issues with reliability. Many had issues with the brakes but Nissan recalled them and put larger ones on. It has never failed to start with me or anyone I have asked. Maybe the trucks hold up better in Florida versus colder harsher climates.

In the neighborhood I live in there are a lot of 50k trucks including raptors. Tons of ranchers/preppy rednecks and there is a general consensus about the raptor that it has engine problems.

If the OP is serious he should go by a few ford dealerships in the local area. Pay a few mechanics 50 bucks to get their honest opinion on the vehicle. They will know much more than any magazine or anyone on this forum.

Err, I know the early Titans had some issues - but they've since been sorted out. Now, the Titan might be a bit long in the tooth, and in need for replatforming - especially with what Ford is putting out today. But I know plenty of Titan owners with high miles and no major issues.

If you put it like that, I'll happily agree with you. I know a lot of Tundra owners who suffered from rusted through frames, buckled beds, and blown transmissions. But I freely admit that my information is anecdotal. I won't make a claim on a vehicle's overall reliability without doing due diligence, and it bothers me when people throw out blanket statements like "XXXXX sucks" or "XXXX breaks all the time".

Heck, I work for Ford and I freely admit I'm not really happy with their e-coat. I shouldn't be repairing rust on my body panels when my truck is only 5 years old, even if I DO live in the frozen north where we through salt on everything.

It's all about presenting facts in a reasonable manner.

Personally, I would hate to drive a brand new car as a daily. Mostly due to the fact that daily car goes thru hell and putting that kind of stress on a new car would hurt me WAY too much.

I keep "nice car' and daily completely separate. Leave the nice car for those special days.....and daily car is my "I don't give a shit" car.

THat works great for me.

OP, if you really want a Raptor as DD, go for it. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd use the new car as a daily, because it's reliable and comfy, and the "other" car to rag for fun....
But then I don't drive much at all.

I considered the Raptor at one point, but most of the awesomeness of that vehicle is designed for offroad use, which is something that I never do. So... Jeep SRT8 it was for me.

I like the Raptor, the SRT, the Cayenne, the X5, etc., etc., but I have a family of seven, so instead I end up with the minivan and monster SUV. Ugh. Now if I could only convince my wife that we need the VelociRaptor...
