Hey, thanks Joker. This sounds interesting. However I find it amusing that the flashlight for life has a measly 1 year warranty!

Well, these are nice to have in a couple of places I can think of. big advatange is never worrying about batteries.

Boat, Cabin, Car Heck, mount it to a wall in the house incase you have a blackout....I don't know how many times tree's have knocked out power and I"m fumbling around trying to find a flashlight with batteries...

Interesting light, daddy. Could save the environment too since you don't need to replace the batteries and the bulb since LEDs can last for a hundred years. Might get one after the coupons.

Wow, thats a good price for an led light that doesnt need batteries. Its kind of hard to judge the brightness without knowing how many led's it has.

I can't imagine it being too incredibly bright, but great for an emergency. Sounds like the same thing you have in kinetic watches, only bigger scale.

That sure looks like a Duracell battery in that clear picture. I'm guessing that it has some rechargable battery to hold the charge you generate. Perhaps a big capacitor, but that sure looks like a "copper top" in there.


And of course it OOS... damn HSN.

looks like a copper wire coil in the center. something to generate enough juice to power the LED for a bit of time? kinda like those hand-crank radios for blackouts. seems like you're "cranking"/shaking a generator in the flashlight. like a seiko kinetic watch. would prefer if it had a pop-out crank so you can get more light time out of each charge, but then it wouldn't be as waterproof anymore.

I would much rather shake this flashlight around than crank a handle for a radio.

What I wonder is
1) Did the combined AT/FW effect kill this deal? Probably.
2) How many times or how vigorously do you have to SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE your booty (sorry couldn't help myself) the flashlight?

It's probably a strong magnet passing through a coil, with some rectification, filtering, and short-term storage (a high-value capacitor?) feeding an LED. Somebody on Slashdot yesterday linked to a simpler version in which the LED was connected directly to the coil.

BTW, LED's require a very low amount of electricity, so this probably has a magnetic coil, you shake it a few seconds and get some energy in a capacitor probably. Same principle as the crankable emergency radios you can find that dont need batts.
