Instead of paying the $1.00+ everytime you use 411 call 800-FREE-411 . They give you the numbers of Business, Government, or Personal listings for FREE.

They used to connect you for FREE after they gave you the number but because of high volume of calls they don't offer it anymore... Have fun.

National and local merchants sponsor this service with a 12-second audio jingle about their services, which are played to consumers at the point they make a 411 request for a business in their category.

Link to a Demo Thingy

Looks like you have to waste 12 seconds listening to a stupid jingle. maybe worth it if you're a penny-pincher or if you use the service a lot.

They don't make you listen to ANY jingle (don't know how long that will last)... (BONUS) If the computer can't understand your request they will connect you to a live operator.

The service is made possible by thousands of national and local businesses who sponsor this service with brief valuable audio advertisements that are played to callers who request businesses in their yellow pages category.

Official Free411 Website

From what the about us page said, you'll hear one if you ask for a business that is in their yellowpages.

Thanks! I was just complaining that my wiff and kids are always racking up 411 calls at $1.25 a pop on their cell phones.

I've been using this for awhile. It works GREAT.

the only downside is that once they connect you, your call is limited to 3 or 4 minutes. But you could always write the # down and dial it yourself to get around that limitation.

I've been using this for a few months (probably a total of about 20 times) and never been cut off after 4 minutes. Is the time limit for real? If so, where is that stated?

I've used this service many times. Cingular charges $2.25 per 411 call. This is free. Even if you have to listen to a 12 second ad...it is GREAT.

If they do start connecting you for free again, they do cut you off after 5 minutes. I was cut off while on hold with Fry's...lol. They do come on the line and give you a warning or two, though.

I've only used 411 once, so I'll just store this in my phone and maybe I'll remember it when I need to use it again in like 5 years.

Yep. But thats only useful if the place you are calling has an 800 number

I agree though, 800 directory assistance is good stuff since its free. Its free because the people who own the 800 numbers all pay a fee for it.

There's no extra fee for an 800 number...just the minutes used.

Perhaps you're think of 1-900-***-****?

So far the only jingle I have ever heard is when I call in for restaurants. If I call for Ruths Chris Steakhouse I hear an ad for PIZZA... If I call for a pizza restaurant (plug--best pizza in Los Angeles is D`Amores) they give me a jingle for a pizza restaurant. Basically if you call for a food/restaurant be prepared to hear a short advertisement.
