No offense but this has to be one of the most irrelevant posts I have read.

All of that nonsense can be summed up into one simple and short sentence:

As time passes better technology is developed and older technology becomes obsolete or less desirable.

Wow, what a news flash.

I bet a ATARI owners are pretty peeved right now because their 700$ console is just "Too G-D SLOW" to run next gen games.

how does switching to a 65nm prove that the xbox is too slow? ;confused:

If anyone thinks the 360 is failing, you must be a complete idiot. Not to mention the halo 3 isn't even out yet.

in SMALL part

The Toughest Job in Video Games: Sony PR

Noting the PS3's unique approach, how do you deal with negative consumer perceptions from a public relations perspective?

That's kind of a tough question to answer. I am pretty sure if you asked just about any real gamer out there if they would like to have a PS3, their answer would be a resounding "Yes!" I think a lot of this goes back to the proliferation of the Internet, where a very vocal minority can make a lot of noise and potentially alter perceptions of the masses, whether they are accurate or not. A lot of this, naturally, is driven by the media who seem focused on taking swipes at us lately, without taking in the full picture. It is funny, but I remember people bagging on the original PlayStation when it first came out, and look where it ended up. Our biggest job over here is to continue to push out information on PS3 and our other systems and remind people that there are things you can do on our platforms you simply can't do on our competitor's. It is all about explaining those points of differentiation, particularly the value over the lifetime of the system, that is key in selling any Sony product.

Are some of those [negative] perceptions justified, assuming you feel they exist? Why or why not?

A lot of the perceptions are not justified and seem fueled by people who don't have all the facts or have some kind of axe to grind. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn't say PS3 is an amazing piece of technology. Yeah, the price of PS3 is higher than other system, but look at what you get - the Cell processor, Blu-ray Disc, built-in hard drive, HDMI 1080p, Wi-Fi, the SixAxis. That is a lot of truly cutting-edge technology in one box. It is funny how myopic people can be when a new system comes along. They seem to forget that launching a truly next-generation gaming platform is never easy and it never has been. I like to say it is like birth: "The actual labor may not be all the pretty, but the result is pretty darn amazing."

But, as a gamer, I like to concentrate on the gee whiz factor when something new launches. No matter who's platform it is, I look at what is truly new and exciting. I am confounded by people who say they are true gamers but all they do is look for the negatives in a system, or a company, or in the industry in general. Some media, in particular, are just too easily caught up in all the bashing. It feeds on itself, and to what end? How do you benefit the real gamer by bashing on something? These are very smart people who can see through most of the BS.

Sure, there were some perceptions on PS3 that were justified. For example, we didn't have nearly enough hardware at launch to meet consumer demand. That was difficult for all of us and contributed to a tough climate with press and analysts. That's behind us now, but a bit of that still lingers. Frankly, I have stopped talking to media about the launch and am now really just focused on the games.

OK ... got that ... it is MY Fault the PS3 sales are Crap

OK ... again ... now for "fair and balanced" reporting

PS3 upscales games and DVDs

Sony has, within the last few minutes, released details of the 1.80 PS3 firmware upgrade.

By far the most impressive feature of the update is the promise of upscaled Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 games, as well as the upscaling of standard DVDs, all the way to 1080p. 1080p has recently been marketed as 'full HD'.

It should be noted that the upscaling will only work via a TV HDMI based connection to your PS3.

Also in this comprehensive update to PS3?s already upgraded capabilities, version 1.80 also allows users to utilise Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available.

The use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

This new firmware also allows users on a home network to view and play media content such as images, music and video stored on their DLNA3 (Digital Living Network Alliance) enabled devices, such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, via their PS3, allegedly reinforcing PS3?s credentials as a home entertainment hub.

A 'host' of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3?s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

Playstation 3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from tomorrow, 24th May 2007

OK ... got that ... it is 'MY' Fault the PS3 sales are Crap

http://www.betanews.com/article/Wii_Con..._as_PS3_Sales_Slide_Further/1179514935
Xbox 360 accounts for about 59 percent of the installed next-generation console user base, followed by 27 percent for Nintendo and 14 percent for Sony. ....

Nintendo sold some 360,000 units of the $249 USD next-generation console in April, up 39 percent from the previous month and its highest monthly sales total since January, retail data from research firm NPD Group shows.

Nintendo said that it is doing all it can to keep up with demand, and continues to manufacture consoles at a rapid clip. Some of the monthly increase could be due to better supplies at retail, although no reasoning was given.

On the flip side, Sony's PlayStation 3 again showed slowing sales, falling 37 percent to only 82,000 consoles sold during the month. A lack of first-party titles and compelling new games are being blamed for the console's weakness.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 was also off 13 percent for the month, selling 174,000 units, however the company said it saw evidence that the release of the HDMI-equipped Xbox 360 Elite helped to soften the typical seasonal decline.

Since January, sales have fallen only 17 percent for the Wii, while the Xbox 360 has fallen some 41 percent and the PS3 67 percent. The Wii's sales stability has allowed Nintendo to gain quickly on market leading Microsoft and pull further ahead of Sony. ...

The best-selling games were all from Nintendo: DS titles "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pokemon Pearl" took the top spots, followed by "Super Paper Mario" and "Wii Play" for the Wii console.

"exclusives will save PS3"??

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/05/11/nam...happy-about-ps3-sales-states-new-plan/
Namco not happy about PS3 sales, states new plan

[Namco] imagine their Gundam Musou title (Dynasty Warriors: Gundam outside of Japan) will only sell 300,000 copies instead of their previously estimated 500,000.

From their statement: "PS3 did not make a good start, which will make the transition from the old game console to the next generation system more prolonged than we had earlier thought. This will keep a lid on sales of our video games in the first half, although we believe that sales of PS3 will increase in the second half (to March 2008)."

Namco Bandai announced a total of 23 PlayStation 3 titles in that time frame (24 for the 360) and the Nintendo Wii gets the majority of 37 titles. This translates to one thing: multi-platform. If the PS3 sales are slow, which they are, then Namco Bandai isn't going to stick around and keep making exclusive titles on Sony's platform. Why else would there be more for the 360 than the PS3? They've got one exclusive, we think, and most of the others will be multi-platform.

and of course Sony is blaming the loudmouth 'fans' and negative press for their lack of foresight

I think one trend that is interesting to note is that consoles ,aside from the Wii (sort of), are getting more expensive.

Consoles have to deliver better graphics, among other things, than previous consoles... and they have to keep PC game capability 'in sight', i.e. consoles can't lag too far behind PC's or people will put their 'console money' into a better PC.

So a $480 xbox and a $600 dollar PS3 were almost to be expected (and sony and MS are losing money on these consoles)... problem is, that's more than the cost of a very nice graphics card and a 1-2GB memory upgrade.

I wouldn't be overly surprised to see Microsoft jump ship after the xbox 720 or whatever it is called... if MS continues to expand capability of windows live (and their future plans seem very significant), and GPU capability makes it's way onto the CPU die in full force (thus lowering the cost of PC graphics performance), consoles could be dead in the water.

well too expensive is a problem ... but with the PS3 it is terrible marketing ... they have a great rig that even upscales the old games and great new tech in the Blu-Ray but they never communicate this to the end user. ... and now that they don't have many exclusives, it gets harder and harder

of course a solution is to CUT PRICES but that may not even work ... now ... today's news

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16277
Analyst: PS3 Price Cut May Be Too Little, Too Late

According to Bank of America's Michael L. Savner, a price drop on the PlayStation 3 later this summer or fall would likely not be enough to stimulate sales of Sony's console significantly. Moreover, he believes that the weak PS3 sales and continued shift towards Nintendo's Wii could have "adverse implications" for publishers.

"Despite growing anticipation that a $100 price cut for the PS3 is imminent this summer or early fall, we do not believe such a move would meaningfully improve stagnant PS3 sales and we are growing more concerned that a share shift away from Sony and Microsoft to Nintendo's Wii platform is incrementally negative of all 3rd-party publishers," Savner said.

He continued, "Based on our analysis, we conclude that a $100 price cut for the PS3 (we have dismissed a potential $50 cut as meaningless) would still leave the 'all-in' cost for a PS3 console and basic accoutrements 20-25% higher than the comparable Xbox 360, and does not even reflect the possibility that Microsoft could also lower its hardware prices. Further, an important driver of Sony hardware last cycle was exclusive games, such as Grand Theft Auto. Unfortunately, Sony does not have a similar advantage this cycle. Halo 3, a highly anticipated game release this year is a Microsoft-published game only for the Xbox, and Grand Theft Auto IV, by Take-Two's Rockstar unit, is being released on both the Sony and Xbox platforms."

Savner noted that Sony made a number of mistakes. Consumers are far more price sensitive than they anticipated; consumers are wary/indifferent to Blu-ray (a main driver of the PS3 cost); and Sony didn't have enough compelling exclusives at launch. To make up more ground, he thinks Sony would actually need a $200 price cut, but doesn't see that happening.

"While Sony could cut the price by $150 - $200, we view that as less likely given that it is already losing approximately $200 per console at $599, based on our estimates," Savner said. "Offsetting a potential price cut are decreasing production costs, which should improve significantly this year. We estimate that the loss per console could decline to about $50, assuming Sony does not cut its wholesale prices. Bottom line, we don't expect Sony to make up meaningful ground against the Wii this year."

. . .

" . . . the share shift currently taking place where the Wii, and even the PS2, are the share takers, our concern is that if software sales also begin to skew along those lines that publishers will be trading higher wholesale revenue (PS3 and Xbox 360) for lower wholesale revenue (Wii and PS2). Moreover, this is coming at a time when publishers are continuing to increase R&D spending for the more expensive platforms," he explained. "Lastly, while certain 3rd party publishers like Ubisoft, EA and Activision have shown some success on the Wii, Nintendo remains the dominant publisher on its platform."

What do you think PS3 for $399?

sounds OK

If they cut the price to $399, then I might change my mind about it.

The fact that PS3's best game is a mediocre game on the Xbox360, I still might pick a $399 Xbox360 over the PS3 though.

The possibility that MSG4 is delayed until 2008 helps none too much either...

They should've stuck with DVDs...and provided an add-on drive like X-box. At least then it would've been competetive...

Nintendo wants to win the console war

Wii not just outselling the PlayStation 3 console by a factor 2:1, but also earning more money per console than Sony is losing on every console sold.

Now, George Harrison, marketing boss of Nintendo of America Inc. has come forward and in an interview with a Seattle paper to state that the company now wants to sell as many as 35 million consoles by 2012 - in USA alone. We could conclude from the numbers than Nintendo could end up shipping as many as 50 million consoles worldwide, keeping this company at in front until the end of the race we call Console Wars 5.0.&

The marketing boss confirmed that Nintendo is producing over 70 per cent of content for the console and cited it a major advantage over competitors,. These usually produce anywhere between 15 and 30 per cent of their own software. This is a critical advantage for the Wii console, since it enables the company to control the quality of content.

Current figures put Wii at 7.3 million units worldwide (2.74 million in US), making this console second best seller out of this generation of consoles. But what makes this success even greater is that Microsoft had been selling Xbox 360 for over a year before Wii came to market - currently Xbox 360 stands at 10 million sold worldwide, with over a half in US (5.7 million). But, the real deal breaker is the number of units that Nintendo has been selling, which could result in Wii having the largest market share worldwide by mid-2008.

For comparison, Nintendo's GameCube - predecessor of Wii - sold just a bit over 21.6 million worldwide (12 million units in US) in five and a half years after its original release. Judging by the rate of sales, Wii could reach that number in half of the time.

so maybe the Wii is doomed too ... i doubt it .. but a new update:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14103
A new Los Angeles Times article discusses the strong start and continuing sales leadership for Nintendo's Wii among the next-gen consoles, with analysts from Gartner and Frank N. Magid Associates disagreeing on whether the console's keen consumer interest will continue in the longer-term.

The newly published article cites Van Baker of analyst firm Gartner suggesting of the Wii: "Its appeal is primarily to casual gamers, and there's a serious question about how long casual gamers will stay engaged with the platform... It wouldn't be surprising to see them lose interest after a relatively short amount of time."

The piece also quizzes execs from Majesco and THQ on the significant appeal of the console to developers, but Baker continues by suggesting: "The Wii in a couple of years is going to look like old technology with low resolution, slow performance... People may not be accepting of that."

However, the article then cites the same Frank N. Magid Associates survey recently discussed by Gamasutra, noting that 31% of Wii owners surveyed in March said they expected to play the Wii more often a year from now, compared to 21% of Xbox 360 owners. It also references Magid's Mike Vorhaus as rebutting Baker, and suggesting: "We don't see [the Wii] fading."

The same Magid survey had the Wii showing the lowest negative result from all of the next-gen consoles in terms of purchasing intent, with 49%. 17% of those asked were in the owners/definitely/probably buying category (6%/5%/6%), and a significant 16% of respondents said they had a 50/50 chance of buying a Wii.
i don't see [the Wii] fading.

The DT report concerning the Wii mods-
In fact, the advent of modchips for Wii has actually sparked increases in demand for the console in markets where piracy runs rampant, such a China. According to a Gamasutra story, imported Wiis from the U.S. and Japan sold in Shanghai during late 2006 for near retail prices. Following the release of the modchips, the demand of Wii increased, as did its price by more than $100. Pirated Wii games are sold on the black market for approximately $1.30.
I found interesting.

Marcus Yams' comment as well
You're right. I remember looking at the picture of the solder points and figured that someone could possibly still mod it, though it's such an undertaking that it'll basically nuke all the current "hobbyist" modchip sales. I've since updated the story slightly to reflect this detail.

I suspect that a new chip will follow, rather than "master solderers" taking over the production of modded Wiis.
In which case, it is a good thing they profit on the hardware sales, as that will really canabalize software profits in those markets. Wil that discourage certain devs from supporting the platform? even if just for titles and genres popular in those markets? If so does that "muddy the waters" for the Wii more? Crazy stuff.

Sony's U.S. Video-Game Unit Cuts Jobs

Sony's U.S. video-game unit is cutting jobs to become more competitive, the company said Thursday, as the PlayStation 3 machine struggles against rival offerings from Microsoft and Nintendo. ...

The job cuts in the U.S. follow those in Europe in April, but no cuts are planned for Japan, she said.

"The goal is to reform the organisation," she said.

Sony Corp. officials have said that changes are in order to adjust to the needs of the industry, as people increasingly use their machines for linking to the Internet, watching video, listening to music or looking at photos, not just playing games.

Tokyo-based Sony shipped 5.5 million PS3 machines in the fiscal year through March 31, fewer than the 6 million the company had targeted.

Nintendo, the Kyoto-based maker of Super Mario and Pokemon games and Game Boy Advance machines, shipped 5.84 million Wii consoles worldwide during the same period. The Wii, which went on sale late last year worldwide, has done very well

Sony isn't expecting to post a profit in its game business until the fiscal year ending March 2009.

U.S. software company Microsoft is expecting to have sold 12 million Xbox 360 consoles by June. The machine went on sale in 2005.

profitable in March 2009

thats TWO more years

ouch!

i guess Xbox is never going to be profitable for MS ... counting the 5 Billion dollars "lost" ... er 'invested' ... so far

They will not buy the Wii in the first place if they cannot play pirated games on them. So, developers shouldn't really need to be concerned since these people will not buy legit games no matter what.

However for Nintendo, it means increasing it's user base and to make even more money by hardware sales compared to if there weren't pirates! That's why we see Nintendo actively marketing in piracy infested countries despite knowing software sales will suck hard.

Rofl... while I doubt my Sony-bashing has any impact on peoples' views (if anything, it seems the opposite based on the reaction I get), it's nice to know they think people like us are to blame. I guess they won't rest till they've grasped at all the straws. Sony deserves far worse than failure.

There is some truth to Sony's statements though. If you were to ask the average gamer if they would like to have a PS3, they would likely answer yes. Their next response would probably be something relating to the cost of the console, 'too expensive', 'I'll wait until they cut the price', etc.

And if companies product isn't a stellar knockout, then a small but vocal minority can sway the masses. Happens all the time in congress, lobbyists.

in this case Sony is stupid ... instead of fixing their retarded advertising and expecting their fans to fall all over themselves to buy PS3, they blame analysists ... Sony is no "apple" ... they have no clue how to market the PS3

stupidity should not be rewarded and i should not be faulted for pointing out their intense arrogant stupidity ... in other words, PS3 should sell really well because it is Sony?

Baloney .. now they need to take the consequences as the PS3 loses its "uniqueness" .. you can buy a Lite-on Blu-Ray burner [now] for $300 ... and the 360 now does everything that was "exclusive" to the PS3

i'd say once the PS3 falls to below $400 they can [really] sell it at a huge loss - with NO real great gaming exclusives because even the devs are flipping the bird to Sony.

Sony 'worked hard' to be in its current ass-backward position and it is extremely arrogant of them to blame their FLOP on us detractors.

sorry guys, but i couldn't resist a real update ... from a couple of weeks ago:

http://arstechnica.com/journal...f-about-games-industry
Getting on to the topic of Orange Box, the question of why Valve's development studios aren't handling the PS3 release came up. While Newell explains that the team's goal has been to create "a framework where all you need to do is recompile for each of those three platforms," the PS3 version was still outsourced to an EA team. The reason for this is that Newell believes the "[PS3 is] a waste of everybody?s time." He continues: "Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There?s nothing there that you?re going to apply to anything else. You?re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they?ve created."

The interview continues to discuss the progression from single- to multi-core architecture, the impending mass-market boom of multi-core, and the advent of "discrete physics cards, like Ageia?s PhysX"?the last of which Newell notes as a "horrible idea" as the "decisions [?] on my CPU have to sit around until they are resolved on the PPU and GPU, and you end up with a physics decelerator."

The entire interview series is a worthwhile read if you want to hear the thoughts of one of the industry's leading figures.
