Well STALKER sucks, I bought it and it is a buggy bore. Crysis looks really cool and should run like molasses on your rig, which proves my point. With PC gaming you have to invest $200-$300 year to keep up with the games. With consoles the devs get better and better with fixed hardware, thus getting better results. How is playing God of War II on your PC? That's a 7+ year old console and it has a better game than anything the PC has this year. Get it yet?

Well besides the fact that I can only run it at 20-40fps with every setting turned to medium and I can't quit the game without it crashing my system, it's ok. Way too slow in the beginning. I hope it picks up because I have to play it in long stretches to make the crash + reboot worth it.

And I was referring to Halo 3 my friend. When Halo 3 comes out in November, I will bet you $10 that it will look better than anything the PC has at the time.

I'm just curious how much Apoppin's rig costed him, and how long ago. He keeps saying PC gaming IS NOT more expensive, but in my experience it is much more expensive. Considering I can enjoy a console for about 5 years. On my current PC I have already been through 3 video cards in a years time, all costing between $300-$400. Thats not even counting the processor, memory, motherboard, monitor and the games which by the way aren't that much cheaper.

i *get it*

RotFLPiP

sorry

i felt the same way when i was playing NWN2 after paying fifty bucks for it on DayOne ...
after 30 days of frustration, i wanted to shove the DVD up Atari's @$$ ... :|

then ... then it went on sale ... immediately after the 'price protection' ended

OK ... so i didn't spend the *whole* thirty days working on that Alpha-mess ...
--but it bugged the crap outta me ... in finally finished it ... the forst Two Acts were *tolerable* and i just ran thru half the ending in godmode to see it
[and laugh at the screwed up AI where my party members would either get 'stuck' in a big battle --or attack each other]

i *will still* get my money's worth ... 2 awesome fan-made expansions are being made on NWN2 ... one being the continuation of PS:T
..
live and learn ... i would not buy an Atari game until i read user opinions here ... they *buy* reviewers ... atari is evil

other than that, if my rig is reasonably up to date and running well, i don't have a problem with new games ...

Shivering Isles
- stayed up till 6am this morning finishing it [at Level 2 ] - it was a *blast* ... it took 30 second to 'fix' the bug that would have me *stopped Dead* on the xbox360

how many games do you play a year

i play at least 20

if you play 20 games on a PS3 or 360 then you pay on average $10 more per game ... $200 per year more ... $1000 more over the course of 5 years.

my rig - in Jan 04 costed [sic.] me about $300 over selling my Tualatin Celeron system . ... it was a total makeover ... and decent for it's day [p4@3.31Ghz/1GBPC3500/r8500-125M] ... i got a 9800xt for Net $150 upgrade ... so $450 total ....

upgraded to x850xt ... and x1950p ... figure net $300 upgrade ...

were at $750

. . ..

"your" xbox cost about half that
console gamers paid $1000 more for their 100 games then i did

at least i am good in "addition"

EDIT: oops ... i didn't add the extra RAM ... net $80 ... for 1G > 1.5GB ... useful for more than games

mine is one hell of a bang for buck gaming rig ... you are looking at 5 years
i think

At Costco, new Xbox 360 games are $53 so you can cut that number down.

There are also other variables you havent considered. I always trade in my 360 games to gamespot or EB games in order to get new ones. I also borrow them from friends.

$53 vs $39 for many [many] new PC releases at Frys/CC/Target --usually within the first ten days of release ...

i think you can add some

i also trade my PC games with friends and on the forum and ...

... and ... didn't we pass PF back and forth?

sure i can

PF x1950p doesn't look any different - except if you stop and really "stare" at it
[which you have lots of time to do if they aren't shooting at you ... flight sims are an "acquired" taste]

console games are priced and sold for substantially higher than then PC games .... and they take a lot longer to reach bargain bin [under $20]

You can see the realistic water setting that was for Nvidia only? The one that used vertex prefetching?

I beg to differ. The water looked very different.

I think my experience was different than apoppin's. I built my computer from the ground up with no money from a parted out machine. My first one was a DFI Lanparty Motherboard (I love that thing best product i have bought yet), AMD 3000+, 1gb of Gskill ram, an OCZ powersupply, a 200gb sata hardrive, 7800gt, a Dell 2005fpw, Logitech z5500 speakers, and a regular old keyboard and mouse.

From Newegg and Paypal I found out exactly how much I payed for them
OCZ powerstream - 142
DFI LanParty SLI-DR- 163
Floppy Drive, DVD Burner, Case fans - 77
7800gt - 319
G.Skill ram 1gb - 122
AMD 3000+ - 135
Dell 2005fpw - 405

that is at $1363 already! I couldn't find the price i payed on the speakers as they where a gift.

Then I wanted to play BF2 so I bought one more 1gb stick - 104(on sale)
The new Dell's came out and I liked them so I bought one - 460
I got tired of the 7800gt's lack in performance in some of the newer games and wanted to see HDR+AA so I bought an x1950xtx - 420

add on another 984.

Then I bought a real mouse and keyboard.
Logitech G15 -100
Logitech MX laser mouse - 60

so another 160

Total $2507

Lets talk games. I normally buy at walmart, it's close and open when I buy games (at night i'm a second shifter). They normally have PC games at $50 when new sometimes $60. I don't buy near as many games as you do lets see what ones I did buy. Half-Life 2, Fear, BF2 and it's expansions, Oblivion, NWN2, and FinalFantasy XI. So about 8 games.
I won't feel the savings there.

You talk about how much better the PC games are going to get, but leave out that to play them at the resolutions us PC gamers always talk about you need strong video cards. I doubt your video cards right now can play today's games in 1080p. Sure PC gaming has REALLY NICE graphics, but to get those graphics you have to pay an arm and a leg. The PC gaming your talking about .....the one that is cheap ....isn't the same PC gaming that you are talking about when you say "the PC is about to leave the 360 in the Dust". That PC will cost considerately more than your budget gamer rig. So your claim that PC gaming isn't expensive is both right and wrong. Right in the sense that you CAN game on a budget PC, but wrong in the sense that the performance will match that of a console for the same amount of time.

Cheers!

not a heck of a lot of difference between the 1950 and the 7800

I *only* used the 7800GTs, but IIRC you had to open up a .ini file and manually change some settings in order to get the "realistic" water setting. It involved changing the values of some of the graphics options from "2" to "3" (or something along those lines) in the .ini and that enabled the "realistic" setting in the graphics menu.

Trust me poppy, the difference was amazing. Ran like crap, but the water was visually stunning compared to what I was seeing before I hacked the .ini

EDIT: This PDF has screenshots that show the difference - ftp://download.nvidia.com/developer/......ertex_Textures/Vertex_Textures.pdf

no i didn't hack a file

*now* that redbox has his dream machine for which he paid a 'premium' on choicer HW he "wanted" not those he "needed" and probably were not 'on-sale' neither ... hopefully is not 'just' for gaming
--he can "keep it up" as a decent gaming machine for a few more years without costing much more than minor upgrades.

otoh, Mine was 'budget', on-sale and was "all-new" except for the monitor/KB+Mouse/OS .. i sold my old system to defray the expenses on my new rig.

... i don't know why some people upgrade their videocard every six months

and it isn't my fault he shops *only* at WalMart ... Target sales, CC and Fry's regularly compete and Walmart will PM if you are not too lazy to bring in their competitor's ad. 'online' is also cheaper ... if you pay $50 or more for a PC you are getting ripped-off

and i get mostly 'high' and 'max' and even AA/AF on my mid-range rig
--you don't need an uber-rig unless you have a hi-resolution display
