<P95 bashing>You want to be certain your CPU is a rock get a GROMACS core Folding@Home WU I passed 5hrs P95TT and thought it was good to go but a GROMACS core blew it up in under an hour :Q Who knows how long P95 would have gone before finding an error. The downside is you don't pick the GROMAC it picks you. </P95 bashing>

And I just ran it for 17 hours on my CPU! Only to find out it was a waste!

I have stated this back about 2 weeks ago prime tolsd me my system was stable only to find divx 5.02 pro could not finish a 2hour encoding with erroring out....In every case of where prime95 told me was stable I needed to raise vcore at least .025v of vcore....

I had memtest pass 10 passes so I believe it was cpu or mobo chipset the reason, but Thug's answers on the prefetching and Oldfart's thread made me think otherwise...

I don't think it's a complete waste but there are flaws it can't detect. Gromacs is a bear on a slightly unstable overclock though! I had to wait 36hrs to get one to make sure my current AMD boxen is rock solid the way I have it.

A little more info about the GROMACS core: It's the best core for processing Folding@Home WU's because it produces good points for submission and at the same time processes faster than the other cores. Unfortunately you don't know when you'll get one but adding -advmethods helps I'm told. If anyone is interested in using it for stability evaluations head over to the DC forum and checkout a F@H thread for info and help in setting everything up. We could use more members for TeAm Anandtech as well

YES! but it is however also a fact that the Gromacs showed instability where the P95 did not. Considering the GROMacs took less than an hour to find instability and P95 ran for 5hrs clean I'd say that's a far more efficent and effective means of determination. Any Tinker WU's someone gets stuck with still go toward helping cure disease and cancer so there's really no downside

No, it needs to submit the data and a download new WU and if you don't get a GROMAC you have to keep crunchin' till you do. As stated it all goes to a great cause but if you aren't the DC project type or don't like to leave your system on most the time then P95, memtest86, and 3Dmark&UT2K3 demo loops are still your best bet if you don't want to encode video like Duvie either.

Yes, in the Folding@Home folder you will see FahCore_78 that's the GROMACS. If you need help setting up go

here and feel free to start a thread for help in the DC forum if you need it

Bah, everyone knows tossing the system from a third story window is the best stability test.

ok IMHO:

i think the real problem with these "stress tests" is the lack of user interfacing.

sure you can loop a demo all day long ~ but your not using the mouse/keyboard/sound.
you go to play the game, and it crashes

sound familiar to anyone?

Yes sir, it certainly does.

All "Join TeAm Anandtech" stuff aside, I am very impressed with how tough the GROMACS core is on a CPU. The overclock was passing everything I threw at it until I got the 78 CORE and then it failed within 45-50mins tops. Hopefully someone will see fit to devise a way to use it as a stress testing tool as I think it would be a very useful addition to the overclocker's suite of stress testing and benching tools.

Yep. But what about looping 3DMark and Prime95 for over 24 hours and then playing games or encoding Divx. If it doesn't crash, then wouldn't it mean the system is stable?
