Formating in linux

I have a 180 GB hard drive that I wanna format. The only thing is, when I do format it says that 5% is being saved for the super user. Well I dont want that much to be saved. Can I disable this feature all together? Or at least make it like 1% or .5%??

I'm using redhat 7.3, after I fdisk it. i type in:

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda

it then goes and tells me that 5% is going to be saved for super user. I dont want it to do that. I dont think the distro matters in this case but I could be wrong.

Why 7.3? 8.0 > 7.3

Fully graphical partition utility too.

And if you got Mandrake, you wouldn't be stuck with ext3 and you could go for ReiserFS


But to answer your question, I have no idea how to make it not do that.

N/m I found it. you put in

mkfs.ext3 -m 0 /dev/sda

the -m is the % flag and the 0 is the percent you want.

Read the docs, someone wrote them for a reason.

And if you got Mandrake, you wouldn't be stuck with ext3 and you could go for ReiserFS

I would consider ReiserFS a reason not to use Mandrake, if I thought Mandrake forced ReiserFS on you.

But to answer your question, I have no idea how to make it not do that.

RedHat's .0s are typically worth avoiding. RH 7.3 uses gcc 2.96, which is closer to what I use than that 3.2 crud.

You are not stuck with ext3fs on RedHat. You can choose better filesystems like XFS or lesser filesystems like ReiserFS.

I've never tried XFS, but it seems tempting. I'm not sure where I'd use its superior features.
Anywho, this is how I make an ext3 partition in gentoo :

mke2fs -j /dev/hdaX

I'm sure there's a flag or something to change the size of the super's portion.
