I just got a 2nd hard drive from a friend; it's an older one that he didn't need anymore, but I thought I could get some use out of it. I'm running Win2k on my primary hard drive, and I wanted to format the 2nd one to NTFS as well, so I booted from the 4 Win2k setup disks with my primary hdd as master and secondary as slave. I proceded to delete the partition on the 2nd hard drive and then decided to go ahead and format it using the disks also. I forgot, however, that the setup automatically begins installing Win2k when the formatting is complete. I didn't want Win2k on the 2nd hard drive, so when it booted up and asked for the Win2k CD, I hit cancel and shut down. Now when I try to boot up, it defaults to the 2nd hard drive (only flashing the option to choose my first hard drive for a split second). I tried unplugging the 2nd hard drive completely, but it still trys to boot from it and reports a boot failure when it can't locate it. So how do I fix my problem? I want my original hard drive to be the one I boot from and the other one to be and empty storage drive, formatted in NTFS. Advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You've modified your boot.ini file. You can try:
booting into the recovery console
use attrib to unhide the file
copy it to a floppy
put the floppy in another system and edit it
copy the file back to where you got it
use attrib to hide the file

What exactly would I modify my boot.ini file to? i.e. what text would I change and what should I change it to?

Thanks,

Ok, I found my boot.ini file and it looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

So I deleted this line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Saved, and then rebooted -- same problem, except now it makes me choose from the following:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Windows 2000 (default)

Where before it just listed Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional twice, and I had to choose the 2nd instance in order to start windows. I need to get it back to its original state, where I didn't have to make any choices at all, it just booted up automatically.

What else do I need to do?

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT

should be:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
