Red Bull third driver Robert Doornbos fulfilled a childhood dream on Tuesday when he took to a Dutch highway in a Formula One car. Racing his RB2 down a closed-off section of the famous road atop the De Afsluitdijk dam, Doorbos reached a reported top speed of 326 km/h.
Doornbos himself came up with the idea for the display after being asked by Red Bull to reveal a childhood dream he wished to fulfill. The highway he picked is one of the Netherlands? longest and straightest, and runs along the dam, which divides the IJsselmeer Lake from the North Sea.
?Wow, this was really cool!? Doornbos told his official website afterwards. ?I had driven De Afsluitdijk already several times in a passenger car, but this is far more exciting! Thanks to everyone who helped us realize this crazy idea!?
The Netherlands may have not hosted a Grand Prix since 1985, but that didn?t stop local fans flocking from the nearby town of Den Oever to catch a glimpse of Doornbos?s record-breaking outing, which he concluded with some attention-grabbing doughnuts before tidily parking his RB2 in a nearby car-park.
