Thanks waffleironhead,
After checking the "no" preferences on the 1 GB WUs I decided to reset the project which got me smoothed out I think. After I get a better feel for this I will go back and do as you suggest. The client was trying to manage the memory but with those big WUs in play my computer was not behaving.

Of course I could always add memory..........

Of course we are going to switch after a week................,

A question:

Can I assume that MW@H uses double precision computing, which is why my ATI cards are not producing much? R9 290 (Hawaii). Or could there be another reason.

Q8200 (four cores no HT), 8 GB ram, two R9 290.

I have not been sitting there watching it so not sure of too much more right now. I did note the N-Body Simulation WUs require four cpu?? I'm new to MilkyWay so still trying to get my head around it.

PS: My other rigs, with HT and Nvidia GPUs seem to be plugging away nicely.

As you noted, the N-body is multi-threaded, so it will grab 4 cores if you let it. Personally, I prefer to run milkyway only on the gpu, and do someting else on the CPU. You can go into your "Preferences for this project MilkyWay@Home preferences" in your account. Then set the project to not use CPU. Then you need to free up a cpu core or two to feed those GPU. Head into your boinc manager and set the processor usage to reflect the two cores you want set aside to feed the gpu's.(50%)

This system sounds like an ideal candidate to run 2 cores on NFS, and set aside 2 cores for milkyway gpu feeding.

Once you have the GPU being fed properly, recheck your run times and compare to Assim1's list over here.

Thanks waffleironhead for that info and suggestions. I have deselected all sub-projects but the MilkyWay work.

When I restarted BOINC I got this notice:

Milkyway@Home: Notice from server
ATI GPU R600 (R38xx) does not support OpenCL

It looks like the Hawaii cards are not being recognized.

I have searched and found explanations why, but no solutions on correcting the issue. I'll keep diddling with it for a while longer but I may have to switch the Hawaii GPUs to another project. If anybody here has a Hawaii card running MilkyWay let me know how you did it.

Here are the stats for the first racing day, as of October 18, 2015, 17:00 UTC.

MilkyWay@Home:

NFS@Home:

Volpex:

Total standing and points in Formula-BOINC:

We have gained 2 points in NFS@Home in juist 24 hours crunching. That is well done. We have produced more than 2 million points in MilkyWay@home - in just 5 more days we may pass the first first competitor, L'Alliance Francophone. We would need more people, more cores, more GPUs crunching ...

Reading the milkyway forums, they talk about using a appinfo.xml file or some such to get gpu work for hawaii and fury cards. Sadly, I have no idea how to do what they suggest. :$ Maybe someone else does.

I saw that and tried it to no avail. I have used similar successfully with seti. These Hawaii cards have been problematical for me from the get-go. I can get them working with F@H and seti but it took some doing.

UPDATE:
OK, it is later in the day, and I have tried everything I know to get MilkyWay work for my Hawaii cards to no avail. What might be our next GPU project?? I will jump these two cards to it for a while.

I have NFS running on the CPUs and when I went into Milky Way's Project prefrences on the wed, Selected GPU and deselected CPU, updated the project in BIONC, aborted all the CPU tasks and it's been running fine, Milky Way on the GPU and NFS on the CPUS

This looks like a place to get an app_info.xml file for Hawaii.

Thanks, that did the trick.

I had tried an app_info.xml from another site but it did not work. This one did. They look very similar at first glance other than having statements in different order. When I get time, I will go through and compare the two.

Right now I am just glad to get these GPUs working.

Thanks again.

Update:
The Hawaii cards are still working this morning............

I compared the two app_info.xml files and the first one I tried was short about five lines of instruction. Or put another way the one Ken g6 pointed me to, had five additional lines.

I will say this, the MW@H app doesn't seem to challenge the GPUs much. If I were running the project alone I would probably set it up to run multiple WUs.

We need 10 more points to climb one more step, 19 more points to come over 100 points and 24 points to climb to position 15.
Think about that, look at the tables and let us consider a strategy which may work - if there is one ...

Is it just me, or do a lot of these volpex WUs get stuck? I've aborted a few on Linux, and now I have one on a Windows box that looks stuck (no CPU being used) although it's only been running a half-hour.

Thanks for the stats petrusbroder.

Bumblebee died on me Friday as I was headed out of town. I'll try to get him back up this evening. Probably lost a vid card. Again.

So more crunching is on the way, hopefully.
