Well, I think when DC was replaced by Vettel, Webber took over that role.
Also, Webber said, he will retain his ties with RB, after leaving the F1 Team.

More hints at a possible RedBull-Porsche Team Manthey for 2k14 at LM?
DC was on his way out. But the major point behind it was that DC was brought in to help test and develop the Jaguar into a decent car and was considered one of the best feedback drivers along with being very competitive in races. Redbull was having issues bringing up their STR drivers as most of them sucked. With an open seat and knowing that DC was on his way out they brought in Webber. But it was 3 years after Jaguar and 2 years after bringing in Newey.

Now Webber is redundant. They have a probable 4 time Champion and now old hand. They can keep bringing in new young guys as much as they want now. I do agree that Webber is a better image fit than Coulthard (though David did try to live up the Bachelor life as much as possible with them).

Did the events of the Malaysian GP (or other well documented inter-team incidents) influence your decision/make your mind up?
MW: No, I’ve had a personal plan and I’ve stuck to it. This is the next chapter.

Were you pressured or encouraged to leave RBR by the team or was it purely your decision?
MW: I never asked the team for more work but I’ve remained in touch with Dietrich Mateschitz over the last six to eight months and he’s been absolute quality for me. Going forward I will remain tightly inside the Red Bull family, working with the brand, and watching and supporting fellow Red Bull athletes push the boundaries.

Did you have options to stay in F1?

MW: Yes but since Formula One as a category wasn’t on my radar for 2014, they weren’t a consideration for me.

it seems f1 isn't getting stale only for fans. fine with me, i'm looking forward to an awesome 2014 for sports cars, and f1 needs some pressure to improve.

Im disappointed in the pace of the Lotus and Ferrari. More competition means better racing. Sick of watching the Mercs get on pole, fall back during the race and then Vettel winning. Ugh.

Let's wait and see if the Mercs live up to their quali times...or even come close...

Ferrari is surprising because they were in a better position pace wise when compared to last year. Kinda ironic that he was leading the championship at this point by about 40 points with an inferior car. That said, Vettel is extremely consistent this year and looks like he is running away with the championship, but I am sure Mercs will fight hard this time considering the tyres are on the conservative side.

I think this season we will see Vettel running away from everyone and rest of the field will fight for the scraps.

I'm actually still a bit shell shocked that both Force India and STR qualified better than McLaren and Ferrari. I suppose, if all goes well, Alonso can make up a few places in the race, even with this broken setup. Also, if it rains, he can probably get slightly ahead.

I don't think anybody expects the Mercs to suddenly run fast for more than three laps, before their rubber falls away, and they'll have to back off significantly....

But then, anything can happen. Sadly, I'll be in the train, and won't be able to watch :-/

What a freaking crazy race. Felt bad for Massa and Hamilton although a bit happy that finger boy didn't finish.

Stupid strategy from both Lotus and FI of Sutil for not stopping during the second safety car. Props to Webber and Alonso for their fantastic drives and Nico for maintaining gap.

Alonso...

I was thinking to myself after his shitty qualifying, that he would just muscle his way back into the top. Even after a very un-Alonso like start, he still did it. And his reaction to Perez's tire popping in his face was amazing.

what a messed up race!

the tire situation has gone from joke to disaster, vettel breaking down (my favorite part ) and a crazy fight to the finish with lots of great driving.

rosberg received a reprimand for not slowing for yellows, but keeps the win. drivers are threatening a boycott over the tire failures (yeah right).

But then, anything can happen.

it certainly did!

This was a very interesting race. At this point I am rooting for anyone but Vettel, so I was delighted to see him DNF, and the last few laps were awesome. The rear left tire failures, at some point, did start to feel like a safety issue, and they certainly represented a confound to fair racing results. Pirelli has some work to do . . .

Agreed and fuck NBC for delaying the airing due to tou de france coverage and showing the results of the race before they aired the event.

Yeah, that was bogus. I also find that NBC's scheduling seems screwed up, so my DVR always seems to mess up and miss the end of the race.

If Hamilton didn't have any bad luck (poor pit stops and mechanical failures the last few seasons -- aside from a few bonehead moves of his own), he would have no luck at all.

Imagine how Webber's career could have been if he wouldn't consistently "Webber" the starts all the time. He's a consistently good/great qualifier and invariably loses 5-10 places at the start...and somehow works his way into the top 5 or even podium finishes. I can't imagine all the practice he's done with the starts and 9 of 10 times he still screws it up!

Yeah, I'm at a loss to explain his starts. He is a talented driver so there should be no reason he can't get this down.

lol

EDIT: lower your volume before clicking

yeah. i could hear the crowd roar on the british broadcast. my reaction was the same.

vettel is a victim of his own success, but what finally turned me against him was the phony apology and excuses from malaysia. the same can't be said of horner, who seems to always be cutting people down when they're not around, blaming others, making excuses, etc.
