Here he is in a small tree.

I would so freak out if I saw that, that close up. I have had a huge vegetable garden every year since I was a teen, and have yet to see a snake in one of my patches. Thank God. Unfortunately I have seen lots of spiders, and weird freaky ones too. *shivers*

Sounds like you should get a snake. They'll take care of a lot of your gardens pests and a garter snake won't hurt you.

Jesus christ you guys are afraid of anything. When you were 8 years you didn't try to catch stuff like this when you found it? Isn't it normal for little boys to try and catch things like frogs, snakes, and lizards? I always did.

lol. I did pick it up once, it was fun...but I don't think I will bother. I can show you the other 20 pictures I took that were blurry/screwed up. I hate not having manual-focus...I had to get the AF just right, and it took more than a few tries.

A couple years ago my girlfriend found a gopher snake stuck in the netting over my parents vegtable garden (to keep birds and other pests from eating the plants). She was yelling for me to come out and take a look at it, but when I did, I thought it was a fake snake my parents put there to scare critters away (Really looked like plastic because it wasen't moving at all).

Wasen't until it smelled the air did I realize it was real This guy was pretty big, about 1 inch in diameter. Took a few minutes to cut him out, he was stuck real good. Hopefully he came back and ate some of the squrrels

Funny thing is I had kept a similar gopher snake I found in my backyard for a year or so as a pet. We released it back into the yard, wonder if this was the same one.

Back at home one of my neighbors is 100% terrified of snakes. I had a friend over and we found a garter type snake so we picked it up and put it in a bucket. Then we walked down to the neighbor and rang the doorbell. She seriously blew a gasket when she opened the door. Started screaming and running around the house.

Its amazing how people can be that afraid of harmless animal.

Here is another picture of him (or her).

Anisotropic filtering is a massive performance hit IRL.

How can you tell if a snake is poisenous or non-poisoness?

Well, IIRC, most snakes you would ever see in your backyard are not venomous. That is not to say that you wouldn't ever see a venomous snake but they are less common.

Here is a link that has the venomous snakes of the US.

Really there are just four species: Rattlesnake, Cottonmouth/Water MOccasin, Copperhead, and Coral Snake.

The coral snake does happen to have a lookalike, the Scarlet Snake. From that link: For these non-poisonous species, the red and black bands are adjacent. Remember the jingle, "Red and black, friend of Jack; red and yellow kill a fellow".

Generally, venomous snakes will have bulges on either side of their head, which are the venom glands. It can give the head a triangular appearance. But even that's not a good way of judging. Coral snakes have pretty potent venom, yet they have slimmer heads than some nonvenomous snakes. For example, my nonvenomous ball python has a head with a more distinct triangle-shape than a coral snake. Best thing with snakes - if you are not absolutely sure that it's nonvenomous, leave it alone.

Dont forget about the teeth.
Of course, if you can see the teeth it may be too late.

But poison fvckers have two big fangs to sink in and inject poison. Snakes without poison just have an even row of teeth.
