That happened to me, I was walking along and I heard music coming from the street. It was a locked iPhone with no way to find out its owner.

I took it to the AT&T store (the status bar said AT&T). For some reason they took my info. Now on occasion I get a call, "We found your iPhone!" I explain and am not bothered again...for a while...

At the lock screen down at the bottom left it will say Emergency. Press that. If it says Medical ID press that. There might be a number there of someone you can call.

Would not drop it off at the police station, they will ask you a bazillion questions, want your info or write up a report. Nothing good will come from that.

Either return to an ATT, Verizon or TMobile store which they will simply ban the IMEI number so no one else can use it.

Depending on the model, it can be hacked and unlocked. Take out the sim card as someone might be trying to use one of those find my phone apps. You don't want cops at your door asking why you have this person's phone.

I found a trucker's CDL license once at the laundromat, tried to do the right thing and return it as he was local, the guy was a total asshole.

If you can unlock the phone, it would make a good wifi device at least. Sometimes trying to do the right thing, is bad.

What the hell kind of paranoia is that? Just take it to the police station. "Hi, I found this, someone's likely going to be looking for it." "What's your name, where was it found." The end.

Edit: ooops, I was thinking about the local police stations in this area, even in the small neighboring city where the police actually give a shit and do their jobs. I guess this wouldn't apply in a larger metro area where there's so much more crime that the police don't have time for that stuff.

Banning the imei is only marginally effective and the owner probably wants it back.

If you want to increase your odds of keeping it drop it off with the Police after a few months it becomes yours.

Yep. I recently was able to return an iPhone I found using the emergency contact info.
