Found out my in-laws are abusing their kids

I spent the weekend with my nieces. Their parents are a dentist and a school teacher.

In hanging out with them, I discovered they are the victims of some pretty inhumane treatment and brainwashing.

For example, when I asked them what they wanted to eat for lunch, one responded with "Do you have any broccoli or frozen vegetables?"

When I suggested Taco Bell, they said that they've never been there before.

When my daughter gave one of them an Altoid, the other screamed out, "There's sugar in there!" and the girl immediately spit it out!

What is this insanity!?!!?!? They don't drink soda, chew gum, eat candy, etc. It seems so un-American.

For the record, I took them to Taco Bell and let them eat all the Cinnamon Twists they wanted. But I feel this is not enough. What else should I do?

I was in a grocery store once and saw a little kid, couldn't have been more than four or five, pick up a bag of marshmallows. Momma smacked them out of the kid's hands, turned bright red with veins popping and yelled "Those are poison!"

The possibilities are endless. McDonald's, Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts. Big Gulps of Mountain Dew from 7-Eleven. Hot dogs. Gotta do hot dogs. Maybe even some GMO corn and (pushing it) non-organic fruit.

You should start sneaking it in. Start giving them cookies and telling them they are veggie disks with raisins in them. Deep fry things and tell them the batter is a new kind of seaweed wrap

Lol, my kids are on high calorie diets, but they still don't get taco hell.

I would never tell my kids that foods are poison, I don't want to get them confused with what poison is.

The words healthy and unhealthy are what should be used.

Perhaps you're not aware Taco Bell has a DOUBLE Chalupa now? DOUBLE!!!!

Eh, on one hand that does sound pretty awful & out of the norm.

On the other hand, they are going to be pretty dang healthy growing up. Kinda wish my parents had avoided fast food & sweets when I was growing up lol.

I'm all for healthy eating but some people push things too far. Funny thing is, it's always the health freaks that end up being sick all the time.

I think balance is the ticket. Better to teach them appropriate eating habits instead of them getting out of the house, saying "this shit's fuckin' amazing", and binging on garbage.

Growing up, the neighbor kids weren't allowed to watch TV except for maybe like 30 minutes a week. Anytime they came over, they were completely glued to the TV set, which was annoying when we wanted to play basketball or whatever, but they just couldn't tear themselves away from it.

I think balance is a good approach!

Yeah balance is key, it's ridiculous to just restrict stuff completely. That's why I could never go on a diet. I know someone on paleo diet and he practically can't eat anything. Life is too short for that.

To be fair, a lot of the ingredients in the standard "american" food is pure shit. No one is saying no sugar allowed or fattie stuff like chips - but eating packaged shit food with HFCS galore can't be good in general.

Also, I haven't gone to any fast food restaurant with a drive-thru since I was in college 6+ years ago... Okay, maybe Chik-Fil-A, but that's it. Haven't touched Taco bell, burger king, mcd, wendy's, etc... It just isn't very good food, the prices aren't amazing, and the best thing is typically the fries. Costs about the same to get a decent burrito (Freebirds, Chipotle) that is actually comprised of legit food to a certain extent.

Isn't 30 minutes a week balance? What do you expect?

I have some in-laws that basically let their lone child control the TV at all times. I find it incredibly absurd because cartoons are on basically 24/7 in the house. I'm just thinking in my head "Do you guys ever grab your balls for once and just fucking tell the kid you want to watch something and no - you don't get a choice?"

I think maybe 30 minutes a day would be more balanced...come home from school, get a snack, watch a cartoon, then go outside or do homework or whatever. Or get a half-hour TV show as a reward for finishing your homework. Heck, the Walking Dead is an hour long once a week, I wouldn't even be able to finish the whole show if I only did 30 minutes a week!

Well, Chik-fil-a is different

And now I want some frosted lemonade.

If my parents fed me healthy food when I was young and helped me to establish healthy routines, maybe I wouldn't be such a fat fuck.

it isn't too bad really, although most kids can see about 30 mins of cartoon after school, so it's definitely strict. But it's not like they can't use the TV.

Maybe the problem is that people don't actually understand nutrition very well. For example, neither HFCS nor sugar belong in 99% of the foods that have them, and there is either zero difference or a very marginal difference between them in terms of nutrition. Also, chips are packaged shit food.

You think a Chipotle burrito is a healthy alternative?

To a big mac and fries? I'd say so

BTW: Don't confuse "healthier alternative" with "healthy"... Chipotle is not healthy, but compared to a cheeseburger and fries I'd say you have a better shot at getting something that has at least a few decent ingredients. All depends on what you order though
