Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain have broken off diplomatic relations and all land sea and air contacts with fellow Gulf Arab state Qatar on Monday.

Saudi Arabia said the move was necessary to protect the kingdom from what it described as terrorism and extremism. The kingdom also pulled all Qatari troops from the ongoing war in Yemen.

So does this mean no World Cup?

The question is what does it mean for the U.S. military presence in Qatar and our arms deal with the Saudis.

Good thing we don't have much of a state department...

I just flew Qatar Airways and had a transfer in Doha. I should check with my trip planners to see how the return flight is supposed to go...

I guess we'll be invading Qatar soon.
Depends if their defense that they were "hacked" has any actual evidence to support it, or if the evidence of their support of ISIS turns out to be founded in reality.

I wonder if the U.S. intelligence community will even be asked to brief POTUS on this...

In other related news, pot calls kettle black. Now back to the studio.
I think you'll find that the pot (Saudis) is an all consuming black hole, unfair to compare them with a lowly kettle.

This is just Saudi throwing a temper tantrum because Qatar floated the idea that Iran could possibly have a place in middle east politics as something other than a pariah. Bahrain and Egypt are along for the ride, but will resume normal relations soon. US doesn't give a crap about this, and it will not impact any US military bases. Maybe some whining by state department to pacify Israelis and Saudis but no real action.

Eventually the Saudis will calm down and resume their usual shady dealings. This is all sound and fury.

My how the al Thani family has changed.

This is kind of a big deal. I can't ever remember such a rift between Doha and Riyadh. Not toeing the line against Iran and getting really chummy with Turkey might be upsetting old relationships.

The president's nuanced and informed view on this development portends good things. Also somebody may want to tell him we have a base there that we would really not like to be asked to leave.

Anybody get the feeling Saudi Arabia is gearing up to take the entire Arabian peninsula under the guise of self protection? Yemen and now Qatar?

Makes sense. One by one, the US has been destroying all rivals to the House of Saud.

Prior to Trump's trip there was some concern that he could be co-opted by the Saudi's to advance their interests in the region at our expense. It would seem those concerns were well founded. Bet there is some good face palming going on at the Pentagon today.

Why in the name of Cthulhu's unholy eldritch be-tentacled asshole are we allies with the Saudis anyway? They are some of the worst human-rights violators in history.

It's either we ally with the Saudis or take over one of the countries. The latter failed badly.

Can anyone explain what the deal is with this? I'm not familiar with saudi/Qatar relationship to know what this means.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE are all majority sunni muslim nations and allies for most purposes. Saudi Arabia is the largest, richest, and most populous of these nations, but Qatar is arguably the most influential in terms of geopolitics. The worldwide cable channel al-Jazeera is based in Qatar and it is very influential.

The cause of this conflict is mostly support for the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikwhan) by Qatar and al-Jazeera and the refusal of Qatar to go along with anti-Iranian policy.

Iran is currently viewed by Saudi as the biggest threat to... well... everything. They want Iran to have literally zero influence in the middle east, and they are hell bent on accomplishing this goal. Saudi arabia also hates the Muslim Brotherhood, because they were (before ISIS) the largest islamist revolutionary force in the middle east. They were and are a threat to the Saudi monarchy, so Qatar's support for them is a serious problem.

Saudi Arabia has recently taken the stance that all its allies must be allied with them in the fight against Iran. Qatar has refused, and so Saudi Arabia has decided it will throw a diplomatic tantrum and close its airports to flights and then complain.

holy shit, turns out this whole mess was caused by Russia hacking the Qatar state owned media and planting a fake news story.

the resulting chaos in the ME and Trump attacking Qatar on Twitter this morning were all results of Russian hacking.

wake up Trumpsters!

and since this is breaking news, the links will come.
