Good rules.

I'd like to add that I hope he can avoid making 3 episodes of Blue Wars.

It all boils down to something I've always said. Science fiction makes the best reading, science fantasy makes the best movies.

The prequels tried to be science fiction.

Good points, I agree.

Never really thought about it, but yeah, Star Wars is the original Firefly - a western set in space. And they nailed the other things that bugged me - too much planetside politics, shiny spaceships, and Jar Jar binks in the new ones. I understand the need to make money from kid's toys, but watching all 3 of the new ones once was enough for me. I watch the original trilogy at least every year or two, but I could be just as happy never watching Episodes 1, 2, or 3 again. Someone needs to make a super-edit of just the good scenes, like the podrace & that awesome last scene of Vader becoming shiny Darth Vader.

Excellent rules, but really I'm not holding out any hope for the upcoming Star Wars movies. The prequel trilogy killed the franchise for me.

As a major Star Wars fan who watches the original trilogy 2-3 times a year, I have faith he will get it right.

I always thought of the pod race as just a setup for some amusement park ride.

Somebody already did do a no jar jar super edit though.

That's quite a simplistic but valid view of the original trilogy I never realized. It makes a lot of sense when I think about Empire as a product of those rules and why it's such a great movie.

The good thing is that J.J. Abrams has said he intends to do less CGI and more props and sets to get back to the original feel.

To me, the make or break it of movies comes down to one thing. The rating. Are you shooting for PG/PG-13 and trying to get the kids audience AND the adults? (Episode 1, Hunger Games, etc...) or are you trying to make a great movie for Adults (The new Batman Trilogy).

I want my movies that have elements of violence to be dark, gritty and... violent. If cursing is warranted, put it in. If someone is gonna die, show me some blood. I don't want to watch a movie geared toward children. I hate those movies. Lots of great stories have been ruined by trying to appeal to to large of an audience. Give us an adult movie, or give the children a kids movie. Don't try to do both.

3 was pretty good.

Agreed. Thanks goodness Harmy has given us back the original trilogy, at least we have that.

That guy was spot on in that video. Star Wars does not need an annoying kid yelling "Yippee!"

I kind of disagree with the first rule though.

In episode 1, there was a big battle on the planet. They had to recruit the gungans. That's basically the same thing as in 6 with the Ewoks.

Episode 4 had a lot happening on the death star itself, which is a giant city in space.

Episode 5 - cloud city...

The one thing I don't get about this is... why did they direct these rules at J.J. Abrams? Abrams is just the director! Complain about things you dislike with his direction (e.g. lens flares), but he most likely has little creative input into THE STORY. This is not like Lucas on the prequels where he was not only the director but also the writer. This guy is currently listed as the writer!
