Fox News: Are they REALLY Fair and Balanced?

I'm curious if everyone here thinks that the news coverage on Fox News is as "Fair and Balanced" as they say it is. They seem to let their news anchors occassionally stick their own personal opinions in with their coverage, so I'm a bit skeptical of their unbiased claims.

they used to have problems, so their solution was to make a silly motto that goes against what everyone knew....and this reverse psychiatry is working

i think these days they're sort of improving, but especially around G.W.'s election, they were just about the worst out there

BBC World News is the standard to which all other news networks should look up to.

Why single out Fox News? Is there any media outlet that's fair and balanced?

Although I do think that station that doesn't have any human beings involved is pretty impartial.

All I know is my grandmother who is always complaining about the 'liberal media' loves Fox News... that alone tells me it's a bunch of Republicans.

Other news stations may not be fair and balanced either but at least they don't make it obvious that they have a slant like Fox does- and moreover have the cojones to call it fair and balanced.

<< Why single out Fox News? >>

Because being fair and balanced is their (untrue) slogan. Most stations are socially and politically somewhat liberal, while Fox is clearly leaning towards conservative. Most people think news is "unbiased" if it agrees with their own attitudes, so Fox seems unbiased to conservatives and CNN seems unbiased to liberals. As a moderate, they both seem biased to me

There isn't an unbiased American news source - they're all partisan and egocentric.

Though I hope you're not saying that UK news is better overall...When I visited, I could only choose between pretty liberal newspapers or (even more popular) tabloid dailies to get my news.

FoxNews is slightly bias towards the right. But to that I can only say: about damned time. Someone needs to give competition to the Clinton News Network.

I try to stick to The News Hour on PBS almost exclusively. You get the top stories of the day in depth, without a bunch of garbage, and the political wrap on Fridays is the most congenial and honest look at both sides around.

Considering that the big 3 news agencies in America (NBC, ABC, + CBS) have a stranglehold on the American public, Fox News is a welcome change of pace.

The question I would ask is, why has Fox News risen to the top of the ratings game? Because America is tired of listening to psycho-babble from only one perspective.

Fox is not on top by accident...

The bias in the American media doesn't bother me much - as long as you know which side it's biased towards you can kinda pick out facts. What's annoying is their supposition that we have no interest in whether the rest of the world is exploding or not. There is more than the US but you'd never know it from our news stations. The print media is mildly better.

I do think they lean to the right, but that doesn't really make any better or worse than all the other networks. As far as straight news goes, they're about equal to everyone else, but their talk shows, etc. definitely present a more conservative angle. Still, after decades of CNN, CBS, etc., the growth of Fox News was inevitable.

The best network is still C-SPAN though. Zero bias.

Don't you know: if you yell something over and over again, people will start to believe it Of course they are biased (and more so IMO than a lot of other stations, although there is no such thing as objective news).

Election2000 racks up casualties
  • The media. The corrupting influence that the media has on the electoral process has been made abundantly clear during this election.
Indeed, the networks were guilty of the most egregious offense by prematurely, and incorrectly, projecting Gore as the winner in Florida before the polls had closed in the Sunshine State.

In so doing, they almost certainly depressed Republican votes, as the party faithful probably felt no reason to go to the polls since a Florida defeat meant that George W. Bush would not be elected.

Of course, the networks couldn't care less if their premature call dampened the Republican turnout. But they are still kicking themselves for subsequently declaring Bush the winner in Florida and, then, taking back that projection.

"You are probably furious with us, and I don't blame you," CBS news anchor Dan Rather told his viewers.

Yet, Rather's colleagues in network news continue their efforts to influence the outcome of the presidential election.
