Fox News - banned in Britain?

No, not yet. According to this article in The Guardian, they are being investigated based on complaints about their reporting bias during the Iraq war. Britain apparently takes news impartiality seriously. Fox could lose its license to broadcast in Britain; it happened once before to another channel.

TV watchdog checks claims of bias on Murdoch channel

At this point, it's only an investigation. No decision has been reached.

Murdoch speaks
Australian-born media tycoon Rupert Murdoch has shown true American patriotism by declaring that it was important that the world learned to "respect" America.
Referring to the American people as "we" , Mr Murdoch said the public was far too worried about what the rest of the world thought of the US's declaration of war on Iraq.

He said he believed Americans had an "inferiority complex" about world opinion and that Iraqis would eventually welcome US troops as liberators.

Inferiority complex . . . what's he smoking?

Yay for freedom of the press! The link isn't coming up for some reason, but I have to ask, who determines what impartiality is? Can one political group crack down on opposition networks simply by shouting bias, bias? Regulating the press just seems like a horrible idea to me. Communists and fascists control the press, in democracies the press report what they wish and it is up to the people to decide what to believe.

Edit: Site's coming up now.

Julian Petley, chairman of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom, called on the ITC to act against Fox News: "I'm not in favour of censorship, but Murdoch would like to do with British television news what he has done with newspapers, which is to force people to compete on his own terms.

What the hell does that mean? People like to watch Fox News, so we must shut it down in order for the rest of us to have any viewers left? That just screams of censorship to me, although the title chairman of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom is a nice one to hide behind.

The amusing part is The Guardian having the balls to report someone being investigated for reporting bias. That's about the most laugable contradiction I've ever seen. They should report themselves before anyone else.

People like porn, too but we really don't want to see it on public display where it can harm fertile minds.

One person's art is another's porn.

That's the bitch about freedom...everyone else has it right along with you, eh?

Interesting that Murdock understands American egomaniacal indifference to world opinion as sourced in an inferiority complex. One doesn't ordinarily associate such an intuitive integration of opposites with a man like him.

There's more quotables from this Julian Petley:

"So if we allow into Britain the kind of journalism represented by Fox, that would bring about a form of censorship ."

I don't see the logic in censoring FOX News to prevent censorship. LOL Sorry I just couldn't hold that back anymore! Maybe, just maybe this fellow is just a little upset that the "mainstream media" with its reflexively anti-American bias finds itself in some serious competition with FOX News.

Hi,

It's quite simple. Sky viewers complained to the ITC about the media bias of Fox news. The ITC then has a duty to investigate. Their is a code of practice that broadcasters must follow. If it is shown that Fox news has broken those rules then they face disciplanry procedings. This could be a fine or at the extreme a ban from UK broadcasting (though very unlikely).

There's a lot of "if"s to be taken into account so it may be that the ITC sees no problem.

Cheers,

Andy

Will the ITC investigate claims by BBC employees of ANTI-US bias they fell is prevelant in BBC reporting on Iraq??

That would be funny to see the BBC be banned in Britian as well. Since their own employess are even pointing out their OBVIOUS bias this should be just as easy as banning fox, think they will do the "right" thing in both cases? Please....

When those employees complain to the BSC (the non-comercially specific version of the ITC I believe) then an investigation will be held. Programmes are frequently followed by public announcements of recent verdicts in such cases.

I don't know. But as I have explained, there is a perfectly easy way for them to make their complaints official if they wish to do so.
