Ok...Well I don't have any PCI devices at the moment so i guess its no big deal.
As for the PSU, thanks for the info.

Hmm.
I read in a review on another website that the PCIe bus is locked at 100MHz. However, no mention was made of the PCI bus.
I can't seem to find anything in the BIOS about these...so...

Does anyone know of the these settings in the BIOS that i may be overlooking?
How can i really check if both of them are locked and if not, lock them to 100/33 MHz?

Anything further on this?

How do i check the buses and make sure that they are locked?

Use Clockgen to check the buses. I assume you are using the P28 BIOS? Your test drive arrives in the morning. I held the article to double check the issues reported.

1)
ClockGen doesn't seem to work for me. I don't know which PLL to use.

2)
My bios info: i'm not sure about the version (P28) as Gary mentioned.
However, i used Fox LiveUpdate to view my bios info and this is what it showed:

MainBoard Type: 9657AA
BIOS Version: 638F1P25
Release Date: 08/04/2006
BIOS Size: 4 Mb
ROM Part: PMC Pm49FL004T LPC/FWH

Now, I don't know what to make of all that really.
I know a new bios is out but i'm REALLY scared to flash it because of what happened to me with my ASRock.

Edit: I think i make sense of it now, i think i'm using the P25 bios, not P28.

3)
Sorry to the rest of AT for holding up the P965 Mobo Round-up.
Thanks to Gary for taking the time and for his effort. (Let me know what's up Gary).

I know the risks of bios-flashing without a UPS but yet why am i still willing to chance it to update my bios now the latest version?

Also, should i chance it????

Ok...

I took the risk and came out the winner. I now have the latest bios.
However, I'm still having the hard drive detection error. Still hit-and-miss.

Right now i'm typing this, booted at 260x14 (3.64GHz). If I restart the system, it might not detect my hard drive...lol. Either I would have to try a couple of times to get it detected or lower the OC.

Any other ideas as to what might be the problem? I'm getting frustrated because its obvious that my components are managing the OC but its just this damn HDD detection issue at startup.

Ideas anyone???

Back at 3.36GHz...
This just cannot be my limit...I'm not willing to accept that.

So I ordered one of these, and it just arrived yesterday. All in all, it seems like a nice board, runs cool, fast and quiet (compared to what I had before).

However, there is one thing thats bugging me a whole lot that I can't figure out.

Whenever my system is reading from a cd/dvd, the whole thing gets bogged down. By that I mean laggy mouse, slow response, and the audio gets all choppy and must be muted for reasons of sanity. I'm also fairly certain that its not reading as fast as it could, as it seems to take so much longer to install something off a disk.

Using
E6300, no OC
Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H
2GB(2x1GB) 667
eVGA 7900GT KO (new revision)
NEC ND-3500AG
Samsung SP1614C

Upgraded From
AMD64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo2 Plat
1GB (2x512) DDR400
eVGA 6800GT
Same
Same

So I'm using the same HD and DVD drive from before, and everything else should only make things better, yet this is happening.

Please help!

Edited for cleanliness

Are you in pio mode? If so that might explain it.. If you running unix which flavor? If windows someone else will have to tell you how to check the mode (thought i think it is something like click device - click properties.

Its probably as simple as being just a driver issue.

Go to the device manager, right-click your drive, click uninstall, then after that is done click scan for hardware changes.
The system should detect is a new device and install drivers for it. Let us know how that goes.

Well, tried that, and it didn't work.

I noticed there were 3 primary IDE channels and 3 secondary, which struck me odd for some reason.

The drive is on the third secondary channel. Might any of that factor into it?

Well, I think I might have it.

I installed and made sure every driver was up to date.

Except the RAID driver. Not full out celebrating yet, but its looking good.

Alright, srry this is a little late. Better late than never?
First off, the board is a regular ATX board, for those who don't know. Standard 12x9.6 size. There is plenty of space on the board, no cables are overlapping each other, though I did have to rout the 8 pin ATX connector around the cpu fan, but that's minor. Installation was easy, though the I/O shield was cumbersome getting into my centurion case, not their fault though. Now for the good stuff. Installation of the cpu and fan was easy and is documented well enough for the newbie to follow. Well, the computer booted up on the first try, so the MoBo was good, and is still working to this day. Havn't tried any of the ocing features yet, but the BIOS is user friendly and visually pleasing. The only confusion I had was trying to find the front firewire connector on the MoBo. The manuel states it has one, but after at least 5 mins of searching, I concluded that it did in fact NOT have one. Also, if there are any extra LED connectors for your case, I don't think you will have enough inputs. I only had enough pins for the pwr on LED, HDD LED, and reset and pwr on button. Minor flaw though. The passive sinks on the north/southbridge are nice, but havn't checked the temp readings yet. There are 2 on board system fan connectors so you can get temp readouts with smartfan, I think most boards have 2 these days.
If there's any specific questions anyone has, don't hesitate to ask.
To sum it up, I'm entirely pleased with the board. Honestly, at this point, it hasn't differentiated itself from most other boards, although it worked on the first try but once I get to OCing, I'm hoping it will show it's true colors.
Highly recommended board for a budget gaming rig, only $100 from newegg.

This mobo...P9657AA-8KS2H...does not have firewire and only has 4 internal SATA ports.
The more expensive one...P9657AA-8EKRS2H...has the firewire and carries 6 internal SATA ports.

Still a great board!!!!

PS: I still haven't figured out my hit-and-miss HDD detection issue while overclocking.

Another thing...I noticed that SpeedFan still does not support this mobo.

Is there any software that can give me real-time CPU temps in my systems tray?

An update on the OCing problem...
I decided to try using my dad's IDE hard drive with my setup and surprisingly...it worked.
The system wouldn't boot because the drive was installed on a mobo with a different chipset so it wanted me to repair...but that wasn't the essence of my test. I wanted to see if the same hit-and-miss would happen but it didn't. The system posted at 3.8GHz (272x14) with everything at stock volts. I most likely would have to raise this in order to keep it stable in Windows and under load.

Anyway...I didn't bother to take it any higher. This just proves to me that it is not a RAM problem and its not the CPU itself. It is either my SATA HDD or the SATA channels on the mobo.

So...let me know what you think is going on with this and what can be done about it.

No working pci lock!! At 240fsb without a lock the pci wuold be 40mhz...That is too high. I would be surprised if you dont experience corruption issues before that time to time...

Do you have the latest bios flashed to the mobo? If the board is meant to support Conroe's it would have to gain support for 266 an dthus additional pci dividers would have to be added...

search the bios hard to make sure you are not p[assing over a lock for the pci clock. You want to avoid auto settings instead force it to 33.33 or force pci-e to 100
