WI recently passed an exemption from sales and use taxes for data centers. MS appears to be spending the minimum amount, fifty million dollars, to qualify for an exemption.

Well, I guess they can stop taxing the people working those long hours keeping the data center up and running, right?

States feel like they have to compete with other states that have no sales tax.

Having this data center is a good thing for Mount Pleasant. They need some development in their TIF district so they can pay back all the bonds they issued. A data center will have a ton of taxable property and very little in the way of service costs.

Microsoft says it will invest $1.4 billion at the site. Seems like it might happen. Mount Pleasant is in proximity to large urban areas so a data center is a reasonable use.
