fps gaming and headaches

just downloaded the half life 2 demo for a try...and it's giving me a little headache. any body else getting this?

i use to play quake 2 and 3 pretty competitively and never had an issue before. i am thinking it's the lcd monitor and maybe the low fps i get in the game. currently using the 2005fpw and i am sure the game is running at ~25 fps or so.

i am thinking the response rate is to blame because whenever i move th pov, everything blurs...and it's extremely hard to focus on stuff. though no one else seem to complain about this problem...

I'm running it on the 2005fpw too, and I really don't think its the response rate of the LCD, nothing blurs on mine.

Could be the low fps, most likely it is just HL2 though. I always get sick whenver I use the crowbar a lot in that game, are you using the crowbar a lot?

When i played the hl2 singleplayer it made me feel sick, my friend had the same thing happen to him so i looked it up and found out that it causes motion sickness in alot of people.

yeah, in the demo that's pretty much all you can use. wish i still had my copy of q3. i love being able to run games on like 200 fps. everything is just so smooth. but no one else thinks it blurs when you move the pov?

thanks for the article...makes me feel better that i am not alone...lol...i guess it must be the level of detail, cause i found the gameplay in quake 3 to be a lot faster and i never had a problem with it.

You can't actually see the 200fps. You won't notice a difference between 100fps and 200fps, and you don't actually see any higher than the frequency of your monitor. 80fps is smooth.

OK, thank God I'm not the only one who felt like projectile vomiting after an extended session. I was only able to play for about 15 minutes at a time before I had to take a break. It gets better when you finally get past the airboat and dune buggy.

Weird...I'm on my second time through...on two systems, One has a older 17" 25ms LCD and my main system has a 22" CRT and I can play for hours with no dizziness or anything...must be some people are sensitive to it.

I owold like to add a something to the above - If I remeber rightly the average human eye can only process around 25-27fps, anything above that makes no difference

Then how come when my monitor is set at 60hz, I get a headache? And when I turn it up to 85hz I'm just fine? Man can I see the differance.

whoever thinks they can see above 30 fps, they're insane. and they're placebo-ing the effect. wanna know what cartoons run at? 30 fps. and they're fluid. think about it.

Oh God, not the "How many FPS can the Human Eye see?" again?!

BTW, it's way over 30fps. 60-100ish is the RIGHT answer.

I'd be blaming the LCD first. LCDs are crap for framerate based games because of their low response times and ghosting issues. Try the game on a CRT if you can.

and you don't actually see any higher than the frequency of your monitor.

False, all false.

Well, I'd say about the minimum FPS a human eye can percieve as motion is 24. Since that's what movies run at. And even then, they're pretty smooth.

I kinda like my games to run at 30FPS just for that fact...60 feels a bit TOO smooth for me.
Unless I'm playing Q3 or something...then it needs to be right up there in the 100+ range. It's weird. But yeah, my sense of "omg is this faster fps wow" gets lost after 100 FPS.

I can't stand anything less than 50 fps. Anything lower, i feel mouse lag. Less than 40, i can notice that its slowing. But after 40, its just about smooth to the eye.

I play single player for hours, fine. Multiplayer, fine. My monitor refresh is set @ 85... I wouldn't go any lower than 75 unless you want a headache.

HL2 is sick alright... gravity gun in deathmatches... mmm. *drools* I won 2/3 DMs i played yesterday... looks like I "still got it"... baaaaahhahah... the server was probably a bunch of 10 year olds. honestly though, the Grav.gun almost feels like cheating sometimes... i find that the tables and a few other objects can act as pretty decent sheilds, so while someone is wasting ammo shooting my table, i just laugh and when they reload, ... 'pwned' awesome game. just awesome.

For me it was the hangover

That FOV fix is interesting.

60hz refresh really bothers me. 85 is my sweet spot. 75 is ok though.

I definitely notice frame rates below 50 fps in games. I can handle 25 but I dont like it since I have experienced 50+.
