I use the nostromo N52..it sits on a tray beneath my keyboard..along with a MX518 mouse. The N52 position took the strain off of my wrist and gaming is much more enjoyable now. I like the combo so much that I have a spare of each on hand..hey..if it works for you..then go for it. There is a slight learning curve in getting away from the K/B, but once you get the N52 programed to your liking, you can use the same setup for most of your games.

Pros of ESDF:
-You have a LOT more access to additional keys for games that require a lot of hotkey mappings/binds
-It feels natural with your index finger on F

Cons:
-You have to remap from the newb WASD in every game :[

I remap WASD to ESDF for the easy to find F-key nub. Reload is R, crouch is C, Space is jump... other buttons are remapped as needed by game

con of esdf: accidentally hitting the windows button. aside from that I think it's much better than wasd.

I use a side mouse button my MX518s to reload and bind kp_plus quit to Valve games but otherwise, no real change.

Back in the Quake 1 days, I, like nearly everyone else, used the keyboard. Shortly after, the mouse + WASD began to get popular. A little later as the mouse was more popular, I used a config just like the OP. I used it for quite a while but switched to WASD after a few years. I got some flack for using that newb way, i.e. right mouse as +forward.

Left ctrl for crouch, left alt for prone, right mouse for zoom/alternate unless it is something like L4D where I use middle button for zoom, or for games where I want to use grenades often and G is too slow and inconvenient.

The ESDF config might be okay but I am too used to WASD. I use E and F too often for things like +use, and for games that have it, Q and E for lean. Also for the average FPS game, I have enough close keys to bind to, and mice these days tend to have more buttons.

jump - right mouse
duck - left shift
primary fire - left mouse
secondary fire - space

I don't know why anyone would use "c" for crouching. When I put my finger on "c", I can no longer strafe right.

I was about to ask the same thing. I've used the Half Life defaults, well, since Half Life. You can't strafe right if C is used for crouching. Same if using the arrow keys. No matter which you use, you can't move as well.

Quake indoctrinated me into WASD and it's ultimately one of the best methods. Why? Ease of access to other keys around it. If you're using the arrow keys, there's a bunch of blank space where keys could be. Instead you're reaching up to your home/end pad, or the numpad, or the enter or Rshift keys. And when it comes down to nanosecond responses, the shorter distances are key.

I also have mouse4 and mouse5, thumb and pinky buttons on the mouse, for ease of access to special controls per game.

I USED to be an invert mouser! But during the days of playing Soldier of Fortune online, I rarely ever lost in deathmatch. To make it harder for me, and give the others a shot, I inverted my mouse back to 'normal' and I still use that to this day.

Inefficiencies bug me

Same here, my friends are always like "what the heck is up with your keyboard setup!?!" I could never play with the WASD setup. That setup usually has Ctrl as crouch. Maybe I got stiff fingers or small hands, but it strains my pinkie trying to hit the damn Ctrl button from WASD.

RDFG might give even more buttons. I'm thinking of switching to RDFG after playing a bit of Crysis, dang that game has so many buttons that are used pretty often. I have no idea how it would even be playable on WASD.

Apparently I am the only one who uses TFGH.

T - Forward
G - Backward
F - Strafe Left
H - Strafe Right
E - Use
U - Reload
R - Lean Left
Y - Lean Right
Space - Jump
D - Crouch
S - Sprint
A - Alt Fire / Toggle Ammo Type
W - Toggle Grenade Type

And if the game allows it, I use my thumb buttons on my Logitech MX518 mouse for various things (Slow Motion with Fear, Night Vision in various games, Weapon reassignment in UT games and HL2, etc.)

WASD
Caps Lock to crouch. I used to use C but you have to move your index finger off D while crouching so I switched to caps lock. It's a bit annoying when you start typing a message in chat and you realize it's in all caps.
Space to jump
L ctrl to go prone if the game has it
All weapons keys must be easily reachable. I usually bind mouse buttons 3,4,5, wheel up, wheel down to specific weapons, since i have no need for next weapon/prev weapon binds.

WASD has served me well, but ESDF is intriguing. For games that require lots of buttons it would be better than WASD, may have to try switching it up

I don't see why people confine themselves to just the left portion of the keyboard. Utilizing TFGH, you have the entire keyboard withing finger's reach. Then again, WASD has been the default for so long, it's normal to see people set in their ways; but I still hear people complaining that certain games require too many hotkeys while the keys they use do not provide enough within reasonable reaching distance. Unreal Tournament was the first game where I saw how limited WASD really is when it comes to full weapon selection and hotkeys. Moving my hand across the entire keyboard to press a few other keys seemed absurd compared to just reaching one finger a bit farther than where my hand rests.

Sorry for rewaking such an old thread, but these controls are probably going to blow your WASD-based minds ;p

Here is the basic FPS control setup:

Forward - Right Mouse
Backward - Space
Left - B
Right - N
Duck - M
Jump - Comma
Shoot - Left Mouse

Thats the basics, your left hand's fingers are aligned on B, N, M, and Comma. You do not use your thumb to press Space, but instead let your hand lay comfortably flatter on the keyboard/desk and move one of your unused fingers (middle finger for example) to press space. If you try this setup, you should get used to it pretty quick (give it 5 mins). Your left hand should be able to reach all the keys you use with minimal movement.

Now onto more advanced mappings for games today:

Use - Period
Melee / Sniper Zoom - Middle Mouse Click
Scroll Weapons - Middle Mouse Scroll
Zoom Aim / Focus - Right Alt
Sprint - J
Alternate Fire / Specials - K
Ammo Types or Grenade Types - L, Semi Colon, Apostrophe
Throw Grenade Types - Slash & Right Shift (or K & L if game has no alt.fire)
FlashLight / NightVision - V and C
Walk - Right Shift
Prone - Right Control
Inventory Item use - Enter
Holster Weapon - Right Control or Backslash
I = Inventory
O = Objectives
P = Pause or open for anything thats left
[ and ] = scroll items
; and ' = select ammo/grenade types
G or H = Use Health
X or Z = Camera related stuff
Y = talk
U = team talk
E and R = reload (in case you miss one, you will hit the other)

if you guys do try this out, please let me know what you thought, im very curious to hear about people's reactions so i will even leave my email here (cold2005 at gmail.com).

t - forward
g - back
r - left
y - right
d - crouch
space - jump
s - prone (never pressed it)
u - reload
m1 - fire
m2 - sprint
m3 - zoom/alt fire

I find it far easier to have forward, left, and right in the same row and just under all the number keys.

Cold0ne, you're nutty.

I've become way to lazy to deal with changing defaults. So I stick with the default WASD. Games I either play a lot or have to use a lot of keys for, I will map a lot of stuff for my mouse (Razer Naga).
