How quickly should the string pass if it is going to pass on its own? Did the vet tell you?

I do not think they gave a time-table. Admittedly I did not talk the Vet myself, my wife had to deal with it all (though I was just told on the phone "If we have to take him in to surrender him, there is NO WAY I am doing it."

When she talked to them today, they said that if anything changes, they want a call back, and regardless, they want a call tomorrow.

just out of curiousity, what kind of string is it? was it like a dental floss type of string made of some type of nylon?
or more fuzzy stype of cotton / yarn string that could be pulled from a frayed blanket? i ask because we have this frayed blanked that the cats snuggle up with us on. they haven't been biting it yet but it may well occur.

holy crap. did he eat a huge amount?

cant really tell. Obviously enough to F up his intestines.

The bad thing in all this is my wife has a home business that involves sewing. So it is our guess is he found a stray string on the floor or something in her work room. So she feels horrific about it.

Just keep a very close eye on your kitty. If things get worse, don't hesitate. Don't wait.

Also, is closet sleeping normal, or would you consider that hiding? If it's hiding, it means the cat isn't feeling well.

Pretty normal. Its a quiet corner and warm (right by the heat vent). It's not "every day" but its hardly uncommon for either of the cats we have.

We won't hesitate to call. There's no question. We know what we need to do that is best for him.

Similar thing happened to one of my cats, got a string wrapped around his tongue and caused it to swell to the point where he couldn't eat or drink.
$400 to sedate him, perform x-rays and to have the vet cut the string off.
Thankfully he didn't swallow it.

WE HAVE POOP!!!

My wife "dissected" one of the turds, and there was "something" in it she said. It wasn't much of a deuce she said, but a few little nuggets.

Vet said its good, but not out of the woods yet.

Good news, indeed.

Now to get the appetite up and keep an eye out for more poo.

Cats are territorial. If they are there first and have been for some time, they often don't take well to sharing their space with another animal unless that animal is completely subservient to them. There are exceptions, but this is generally the case.

If the OP got a puppy, the puppy would learn to defer to the cat and the cat would most likely accept the pup, as many pet animals give a pass to other juvenile pets, even of other species. Again, there are exceptions.
I've actually had the opposite work better for me. We had a four year old golden retriever when we got a kitten and they got along great. They even would nuzzle up with each other. Now we have two different cats and got a labradoodle over a year ago. The dog just wants to play with the cats but the cats are having nothing to do with that. We keep whatever room the dog is in fenced off from the rest of the house. The family room/kitchen gate has a little door for the cats if they do want to come in while the dog is in. Our girl cat will and will hang out a little until the dog runs over and gets up in her business. We're just waiting really for the dog to mellow out a little. She's still really a puppy at heart and just wants to play.

Back to the topic, that's encouraging to hear Homerboy. You have such a nice family I know you take care of your pets the best you can. Cats are cats and will get into trouble no matter what you're wife might have done. It seems like the little guy is pulling through so let's hope for the best.

Poop kittah, poop.

he ate a fair amount for breakfast this morning and the bowl was empty from over night (thought maybe Eddie the other cat gorged himself?) Still wont go upstairs though and is definitely "skiddish" and jumpy.

No poopers.

Edit: I have to admit as a 36 year old, red blooded American male, I never thought I'd be posting about my cat's bowel movements on an internet forum.
