Thanks for all the kind words and well wishes from everyone. It really was nice to have everyone behind my kitty cheering for some poop (enjoy the visual of that). Kitty was happy and playing this morning when I left for work.

So happy. Glad I didn't do the surgery both for kitty's sake and for my wallet's sake.
I do have to say that it's a bit troubling that the vet was so doom-and-gloom if there was no surgery. That they were just ready with the knife (and the bill) the moment they saw him.

I think this (can be) an inherent problem with vets; that they are so overwhelming in love with animals they will stop at NOTHING to save them. IN my experience with cats (I have had several over the course of my 36 years), they are INCREDIBLY tough, resilient and they know how to take care of themselves. If they are not lying in a corner, moaning for dear life, it seems they always find a way to pull through.

Yeah cats are pretty resilient.
To be fair, the vet is charged with showing you all of the options available and counseling on their chance of success. The surgery while costly had the greatest chance of success, while letting nature take its course was risky. They lay out the options then left the decision up to you.

To be fair to the vet, your kitty's situation was pretty bad. Surgery should have been recommended. During my time working at the vets, I saw many people who took the wait and see approach and lose.

Yeah I know the Vet was just providing the "best" suggestion. And I'm sure I'd be signing a different tune if things were different. I know, and respect, that they are there to offer the best advice for the animal.

Wow...$300 is it for a pet? I just put $2000 this past weekend in a 12 year old dog I inherited 6 months ago.

My feeding bill for the ferals outside is $145 a month.

I wish the cat the best of luck, but should the worst happen please get a goldfish or something.

String in the intestines can be serious. If you take the chance and fail, usually it's fatal.

It's a veternarian's job to do everything it takes to save an animal. It's your job to set the cost limits (and $300 is ridiculous....that wouldn't even cover a good set of XRays and a radiology review).

Sadly many vets are into it just for fees. Also many are not too good at surgery. Today's vet is more likely to order xrays at about $300-400, then an ultrasound at about double and then finally a CAT scan at $2k by itself.

Doing a simple exploratory surgery is much cheaper and usually can fix the problem at the same time...a lot of the surgery cost is in the initial anesthesia and drug packs.

Ahhh, these threads are the best to read. Even when i am consuming food while reading ^_^. I am happy to read that your pet turned out ok.



On a sidenote :
I do wonder if it ever turned out ok with the lad who lost his little cat. The one who posted the thread and where TFP was behaving like a pigs ass while the pig was having diarrhea. Did that lad find his little kitten again ? Does anybody know ?

I don't know, but it must hurt awfully to have a missing pet. I hope the kitten found its way home.
