Nor will I. We have spent thousands on our various dogs and cats over the years and I have never regretted a cent of it. The only thing that pisses me off is people that presume to tell me what I should be spending that money on instead of our pets. Hoping for the best for the kitty as well.

I have no problem or qualms with people spending what they feel that they can and want to spend. In all honesty, if money were not an (ongoing) issue in my house I wouldn't have a problem spending the money on the surgery. But when it comes down to it, where my family and I currently stand financially, even the $350 I'm going to be charged for the exam and xray is going to severely hurt us. That's why surrendering was the ideal option (and hopefully if he takes a dump today an option we can avoid)

Yeah, I've spent quite a bit on trying to save my animals. $500+ on a cat who pulled thru and $2500 on one who didnt make it. Its a hard decision to make, and I'm not going to judge people one way or another on it.

Hoping for the best for kitty.

^^^ Says it all.

I got that from your OP and understand fully. You do what you can and hopefully it turns out for the best. If it helps any my wife's first cat ate a silk scarf and it managed to pass all the way through.

And what, you think dogs and cats don't get along?

Cats are territorial. If they are there first and have been for some time, they often don't take well to sharing their space with another animal unless that animal is completely subservient to them. There are exceptions, but this is generally the case.

If the OP got a puppy, the puppy would learn to defer to the cat and the cat would most likely accept the pup, as many pet animals give a pass to other juvenile pets, even of other species. Again, there are exceptions.

well he seems to have some of his spirit back, certainly not all. He's TRYING to eat, but its wreird, he kinda gets it in his mouth and flings it. Not chewing or anything, just kinda picks up a piece and drops/throws it. I wonder if his tongue is a little swollen or something.

Still hasnt crapped though. pee'ed at least.

You are all learning more than you ever wanted to know about my cat.

I would call the vet and advise them of the situation. It's likely that his tongue is very sore, but he still needs to eat, and the lack of poop is unsettling. Has he eaten anything at all?

$1,000 isn't unreasonable for a pet. If he has 10 years left, that's $100 per year, or $8.33 per month. Likely that's less than your spending on food. It sucks putting the money out up front, but it isn't that much in the long term.

Update:

He has been in pretty good sipirts. Actually running and playing a bit. Scratching at the floor, rolling around, begging to be pet (all natural for him). He ate a little bit of canned food last night (we figured the softer stuff may be easier for him) and this morning he crunched his way through some hard food (normally he will DEVOUR a fresh scoop in the morning... he's eating, just not full-bore yet it seems. NO PUKE thus far (that we know of) and that was the #1 thing the Vet said to worry about. So that's good. No poops though either. He did drink a lot of water too.

He doesn't seem to want to go up or down stairs though. He has remained on the 1st floor since this all started. He ALWAYS wakes me up in the morning (2nd floor) and ALWAYS has to be were we are, so that's a little odd.

He seems in good spirits though. Not suffering or whining or moaning or anything. He's jumping on couches, counters (grrrrrrrrrrrr) and laps etc. I'd say most of his personality is back. I'm hopefull at this point.

Kitteh in question (baby pic):

See above update.
He's eaten some. Wife planned on calling Vet today (though they always are proactive and call us to be honest, even just after normal check ups and such... awesome Vet).

He looks just like my cat Louie, but obviously in kitten form

Keep us updated, I've been checking in periodically.

I hope everything with the little guy is all right. I can totally understand that sometime vet bills can be too much. My wife worked at a vet for years and it always bugged me the amount of people that would put down an animal over a couple hundred dollars and refused to surrender it. They would rather it die than goto someone else. Good thing I didn't work there as I am sure I would not be able to keep my mouth shut.

"Rico" is 20 months now. He's MUCH bigger than that picture.
Will keep the updates coming. In fact I just emailed my wife asking what was up.

Sidenote to all of this, Rico (the cat in question here) has had these "balds spots" on both his hips for the past 6 months or so. Maybe a 1x2 inch square. Almost symmetric on each hip. We took him to the Vet for them and they said it was no infection or anything that it was likely due to over grooming... but honestly I just don't see that. He grooms himself sure, but I have NEVER seen him obsessive about it, let alone in those specific spots. Unless he is doing it at night when everyone is asleep or something. It's very odd.

That's my hope/thought too.
He spent a whole day puking and not eating.
Now he's barely eating... so prob not much in the way of solids is ready to be expelled.

Wife talked to Vet. There were not to excited about the minimal eating thus far. Obviously it's hard to tell though what is going on, let alone translating that over the phone.

Friend suggested calling her pets' vet to get a 3rd party opinion and he was pretty much doom and gloom I guess. Saying that he's seen A LOT of cases just like this and it always ends up in surgery or death.

Wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I'm not a health care pro of any sort, nor do I wish to play one on the intarwebs, but these two things you said. in combination they give me pause.

Meh, what do I know? Still, I'd tell your vet about the second while reminding him of the first.

The bald patches he has had for months and months, during which time he went up and down the stairs just fine. It has only been the past 24ish hours where he has not wanted to go up or down.

Totally unrelated.
