Fram oil filters $1, no thanks. I wouldn;t use them if they were free. Their air filters are good though.

Its $1 off. If you change your oil regularly, these are just fine.

This is a quote from a review on many types of oil filters. This Link has been posted several times before in other threads here. It is not the filtering quality that is the problem with these, It is the bypass and anti-drainback valve that are substandard and make this brand an oil filter to be avoided. The air filters are ok.

"Fram Extra Guard PH8A
This filter cartridge has a small outside diameter with a rather low filter element surface area (193 sqin), and features cardboard end caps that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals the rough metal backplate to the cardboard end cap and easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. If you have a noisy valve train at startup, this filter is likely the cause. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak. The backplate has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow.
The telltale signs for a Fram Extra Guard are: It has 8 small holes for the oil inlet and a thin, cheap looking backplate, and is currently stamped with a "2Y". There are 5 very small crimps holding the gasket in place. If you look into the center hole all the way to the top of the filter, you will see a kind of "button" in the end cap of the cartridge (which looks like it's made of metal from there). This is the plastic bypass valve. "

When you consider you're saving $1 on the maintenance of a $20,000 item, it just doesn't make sense. Fram is junk, $1 off or not.

Purolator apparently has gotten very good reviews - their filters are pretty cheap, too. Remember, no oil/dirty oil/bad filter = dead, damaged, or short-life engine, which nobody likes.

puralators are ok, the mobil1 is the best filer around, pricey though... but 15$ filter on a 10k$ car, i think i can swing it.
NEVER put a fram oil filter on, and why change air filters when k&ns are 30$ or so...

I tried one a while back it sucked hard, and leaked. It was not worth the sale price I picked it for.

Fram oil filters are terrible. Oil is the lifeblood of any engine, a bad filter will lower the lifetime of your engine. Personally I use the Purolator PureOne filters. They cost a little more but they work nicely. OEM filters are also a good option. You can pay $1 and $3000 later for a new motor or just get a decent filter now and save the money.

Mobil is of the better around, I wouldn't say they are the best out there. Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion Labs, who also make Supertech filters, STP, and Bosch filters. Motorcraft filters are rebadged purolator purone filters. Some acdelco filters have been shown to have identical internal contrustion to a Champ Labs filter; acdelco usually hav a bit more filter media than the rest of 'em do.

Wix and napa gold filters (both are one and the same) are good filters, as well as purolator, ac delco, fleetguard, baldwin, amsoill, basically anything but fram. Yes, they still do filter oil, but, it's the constrtuction and quality of the filter that worries me about people who are paying $4 for a filter that they think are getting a better filter than the $2 supertech.

As far as filtering media area is concerned, fram on average has less than the other brands; the construction of the filter combined with the price of what you get is what makes fram a not so good oil filter. Supertech filters are constructed better than frams, and supertech are $1.97 at walmart. The only fram I would consider is perhaps the X2, but at $10, you are paying a lot for what you could get for $4 less by going with a Napa Gold, which are usually about $6.

BITOG Good site with lots of info.

Both of my cars get Bosch, for $5.99 at Autozone you cannot get a better filter, synthetic inside and very sturdy pressure valve's almost identical to the $11 Mobil filters.

As much as I think that oil analysis page and its mirrors are great resources, some of that info is outdated and shouldn't be taken as gospel without doing some checking for the model you need. That page was last updated in 2000 and started a little before that.

With that in mind, a deal is a deal and that's why it was posted.

(and thanks for reminding me about my air filter )

I use Supertech, similar construction to Mobil1 (made by the same manuf. I think) and less than $2 at Wal-Mart.

Supposedly the OEM Honda filters that are made in Canada/US are just as bad if not worse than FRAM (esp the ones by FILTECH). If you can get a Japanese made OEM Honda filter, those supposedly are great.

If you don't want to pay a lot for a good filter, buy the Supertech at walmart. Skip the Fram.

I have also heard some horror stories about Honda OEM filters. Luckily I don't drive a Honda Toyota OEM filters are pretty decent (supposing you own a toyota) and often you can get them cheap/free if you can sweettalk the parts guy when you make other purchases. Whenever you get an oil filter, don't forget your drain plug/gasket!!!

Yes, Champion Labs makes Mobil 1, Supertech, Bosch, and STP filters. ACDelcos usually have simiar construction, and ususally, the ACDelcos usually have more filter media than the bosch, stp, supertech equivalents.

The Walmart everyday price for the three air filters I use meets or beats the K-Mart sale price. One filter is $3 less at Wally.

So I'll ask..... how are, and what are, the filters used at Jiffy Lube?

I agree, I saw a bunch of different filters cut in half on a counter at Autozone. The Bosch looked like the winner to me also. Mobil 1 cannot compete on cost/value basis to Bosch, to justify the higher price.
