Frame shearing with a Ti4200!?!

Ok... I got a 64MB Ti4200 not long ago... On need for speed 5, there is noticible frame shearing (especially in high action scenes), where the picture noticibly seems to break and shift horizontally. Its not a horrible problem, but it is a little disappointing. The card that got replaced (32MB ddr Radeon 7200) performed significantly better on this game. On Return to Castle Wolfenstein, things are better... frame rates are way up and there is no shearing. However, I get the shearing on DVDs also... which really puts me off because I watch more DVDs than I play games...

As a side note, I do have the latest Nvidia drivers and run a 17" LCD at 1280x1024x32 (72Hz refresh) on an analog input.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here....

thanks.

Vsync errors, prolly, try to have Vsync always on in both openGL and Direct3D

if it aint that, then I wouldnt know either, and a ti 4200 is supposed to outperform yer 7500 by at least 25 % so if it is slower u might wanna check if there is nothing blocking it's speed (bad drivers, incompatibilities with older drivers, etc)

hope this helped a bit ...

I spose tweaking tools can do the job, but u better upgrade drivers if the Vsync option isnt available cous it's spoesed to be in there ...

Vsync makes sure your framerates are "synced" with your refresh rate. if you are getting 80fps and your refresh is 70, then you may/will have display problems -tearing, etc. To enable/ disable vsync, you go to your display properties>settins>advanced>geforce4>direct3d/opengl. At least that is how you get there with my geforce 3. I cant imagine it would be dramatically different for your geforce 4, good luck.

Well a 4200 should kill a Rad7200, even a Rad8500, certainly if you like AA. Unless your CPU is too slow to provide the info in which all mid-range gfx cards will perform about the same as the high end. Rad cards do have hw MPEG2 decoders which off-load the CPU when playing back MPEG2 (DVDs mostly), however since even a PIII 500mhz can easily decode MPEG2 it makes little sense that this is effected. It would seem that GF4TI cards have probs with output to LCD, try a monitor and the latest official manu and nvidia drivers to see if any of the helps. BTW, what is your config?

If Need For Speed is a Direct3D game then you'll probably need a tweaker like RivaTuner to access the vsync setting as nVidia's drivers only include the option for OpenGL.

card that got replaced (32MB ddr Radeon 7200) performed significantly better on this game.
Did you correctly remove all traces of the Radeon before you swapped cards?
Have you checked your driver control panel and disabled things like FSAA and anisotropic filtering on your GF4 Ti4200?

I have a 1.7GHz Williamette P4 with 768MB PC800 ram...

and by the way.. "vertical sync" was on... this didnt help

Both of those are disabled... though i didnt removed the ATI control panel *before* i installed the GF4... I did it afterward...

I would suggest uninstall gfx card drivers & tools, run Detonator Destroyer (and an ATI driver killer if you can find one), reinstall the latest official gfx drivers from nVidia or the manu's website and then reinstall DX8.1. Vsync will hurt you most when the refresh rate is low, common now that many people commonly play games at 1024x768 and higher AND with WinXP having probs setting higher refresh rates than 60Hz when gaming. Vsync on should eliminate any shearing (flashing horizontal lines) but will place a cap on your frame rates, 60Hz means a max of 60 FPS, but technically this can be even less.

A search should find Detonator Destroyer, maybe try Guru 3D. As for ATI driver killer, I don't know of any specific sw which kills the ATI drivers completely as Det Des does for nVidia cards. Many people experience diffs when switching from ATI to nVidfia (and vice versa), I think they do it on purpose to stop people switching

If all else fails, you may need a fresh install ...
