France bans "paying for sex"

The French union of sex workers (Strass, its acronym in France) called on members and supporters to protest the "repressive" bill outside the National Assembly, where lawmakers adopted the reform into law.

The legislation outlaws paying for sex, imposes fines for clients and overturns the existing ban on solicitation. In an unprecedented move, the bill also makes available EUR4.8 million per year to help sex workers quit the trade.

The comprehensive approach, which envisions an eventual eradication of prostitution, has earned support among other French organisations that assist and defend sex workers.

The law comes after more than two years of political wrangling, spurring heated debates – even among prostitutes – on the controversial topic.

‘Change mentalities'

The bill was authored by Socialist MP Maud Olivier - who represents the Essone department near Paris - who has made the fight against prostitution her personal crusade.

“Prostitution is violence”, the lawmaker states on her website, adding: “This poorly-understood violence is alone in not being recognised as such in law”.

Olivier says the law will help authorities tackle pimping and human trafficking, protect victims and help them escape the sex trade. It will also help better educate young people and clients of the harm caused by prostitution.

“The goal is to diminish [prostitution], protect prostitutes who want to quit, and change mentalities” she told France's Le Monde newspaper on Tuesday.

More feminist crap to try and repress men by shifting the "blame" from prostitutes to men buying the sex. Yes, because the prostitutes are completely innocent! This is what happens when liberals are in charge, they try and shift the blame to the men and shame them for having perfectly normal urges to fuck. Man, I dunno. When you read about prostitution, there really aren't that many prostitutes that do it willingly, as some sort of vocation, than there are women forced into it. Especially at a young age.

Yeah, while I will never be paying for it, I think that legalizing it (and regulating it to require tests be done to prevent spreading STDs) would really help remove a lot of problems. Trafficking would remain a problem though, I suspect - I live in Seattle which is more or less a trafficking hub due to us being a large port - they're smuggled out of the country.

I really do doubt that. If you legalize prostitution, that merely allows the traffickers and sex slavers to work in the open.

Unless of course you mean legalized AND heavily regulated, then I suppose there is that possibility, but it certainly wouldn't be rectified overnight. That'd take one hell of a long, upward battle; ascertaining trafficking groups, justice for the victims, care (e.g, therapy, housing), that sort of thing.

Keeping prostitution illegal means that prostitutes can't rely on protection from the law, can't easily receive clients without connections, and need other people to help manage their income in ways that will keep them from getting caught for not paying taxes.

Legalizing it will remove these barriers and will open up much more free market pressure making it harder to compete with the overhead of giving some other people big chunks of your money. Meanwhile, pimping could be further tightened down by making that illegal separately.

That's just the thing though. France is "unbanning" solicitation by women but banning "payment for sex" by men. Hence removing all penalty from the woman. Olivier claims she wants to eradicate prostitution but she's only going to increase it as the women will conduct their profession in the privacy of homes on the internet vs the street which makes it more unregulated and less safe. Now women will have to do it on private property vs public to earn a living.

Also, she is claiming "prostitution is violence" i.e. insinuating that men's urges to fuck = violence. No wonder their dipshit country has a negative non-immigrant birthrate.

The bottom line is that studies show that prostitutes are safer when it is legal/regulated, not banned where they have no protection. This is a clear case of old French women trying to take away men's right to fuck whoever they want (to pay) away. When you fuck, your testosterone spikes and it's healthy for men. In my single days I would probably have tried it if it was legal/safe. Why not if you have the money and the urge hits? This (and weed legalization) is where Canada has the U.S. beat by a mile.
